Angelo Vacca è nato a Bari il 16 febbraio 1956 ed ha compiuto tutti i suoi studi in questa città. Ha conseguito la maturità classica presso il liceo Q. Orazio Flacco nel luglio 1974 con una media di 54/60, e la laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia nel luglio 1980 con voti 110/110 e lode. Durante gli studi universitari è stato allievo interno negli Istituti di Anatomia Umana Normale (anni 1975-76 ) e di Clinica Medica (anni 1978-80 ).
Dal luglio 1980 sino al dicembre 1989, fa parte dell’Istituto di Patologia Speciale Medica e Metodologia Clinica dell’Università di Bari come medico interno frequentatore. E’ stato nominato, a seguito di concorso, collaboratore tecnico presso la 1 a
Cattedra dello stesso Istituto a partire dal 1° gennaio 1990 .
Ha conseguito nel dicembre 1983 la Specializzazione in Ematologia Generale con voti 50/50 e lode. Ha conseguito nell’ ottobre 1993 la Specializzazione in Medicina Interna con voti 50/50.
Nell’anno accademico 1985-86, a seguito di concorso, è stato ammesso al corso triennale di Dottorato di Ricerca in Immunologia Clinica presso l’Università degli Studi di Bari, che ha frequentato regolarmente sino all’anno accademico 1987-88. Nel giugno 1989 , ha conseguito il titolo di Dottore di Ricerca.
Dal settembre 1983 all’ottobre 1986, ha trascorso un periodo di studio e di perfezionamento presso il Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research – Lausanne Branch di Losanna (CH), lavorando nel laboratorio del Prof. Jean-Pierre Mach, alla messa a punto di anticorpi monoclonali ed al

loro impiego per la diagnosi e la terapia delle malattie linfoproliferative dell’uomo.
E’ stato nominato, a seguito di concorso, professore associato di Metodologia Clinica presso la Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia dell’Università degli Studi di Bari, a partire dal 1° novembre 1992.
A decorrere dal 1° novembre 1995, è stato confermato nel ruolo di professore associato di Me todologia Clinica.
Il 5 dicembre 2002 è risultato idoneo a ricoprire il ruolo di professore ordinario di Medicina Interna .
Dal 1° gennaio 2005, ricopre il ruolo di Professore Ordinario di Medicina Interna presso l’Università degli Studi di Bari.
Dal 1° gennaio 2005, è Direttore della U.O. di Allergologia e Immunologia Clinica dell’Università degli Studi di Bari.
Dal 1° novembre 2010, è Direttore della U.O.C. di Medicina Interna Universitaria “G. Baccelli”.
SINTESI DELL’ATTIVITA’ SCIENTIFICA
La sua attività scientifica riguarda studi di 1) immunopatologia, con particolare riferimento agli aspetti clinico-immunologici e terapeutici delle malattie linfoproliferative e delle neoplasie solide e 2) oncologia, concernenti la caratterizzazione dei meccanismi epigenetici della progressione tumorale in tali malattie.

- Immunochimica ed immunocompetenza nei pazienti con mieloma multiplo e con gammapatie monoclonali di significato indeterminato.
- Produzione, caratterizzazione immunochimica ed applicazioni terapeutiche di anticorpi monoclonali diretti contro antigeni tumorali dei linfomi non-Hodgkin a cellule T, del melanoma e del carcinoma del colon.
- Caratterizzazione immunochimica delle crioglobuline e marcatori di attività delle crioglobulinemie.
- Caratterizzazione di citochine angiogeniche (FGF-2, PlGF-1, Epo).
- Attività angiogenica di diverse linee cellulari (endoteliali transfettate con FGF-2, linfoblastoidi, di neuroblastoma) in modelli sperimentali in vitro ed in vivo.
- Attività angiogenica di glicoproteine e lipoproteine (eparina, transferrina, LPa) in modelli sperimentali in vitro ed in vivo.
- Correlazione fra angiogenesi e progressione tumorale nei linfomi non-Hodgkin, mieloma multiplo, micosi fungoide, melanoma, adenocarcinoma dell’endometrio, carcinoma epatocellulare, neuroblastoma e granuloma piogenico.
- Ruolo delle cellule infiammatorie, in particolare monociti-macrofagi e mastociti, nell’angiogenesi associata a processi infiammatori cronici (artrite reumatoide, artrosi) ed a tumori maligni (linfomi non-Hodgkin a cellule B ed a cellule T, mieloma multiplo).
- Caratterizzazione di molecole ad attività antiangiogenica (IFN-a, ciclosporina, vinblastina, docetaxel, paclitaxel, inibitori delle metalloproteasi) in modelli sperimentali in vitro ed in vivo.

- Ricerche terapeutiche nei pazienti con mieloma multiplo, deficit immunologici, vasculiti e malattie autoimmuni, in particolare per quanto attiene all’impiego delle IgEV.
Angelo Vacca ha approfondito la sua preparazione, ed in particolare le conoscenze sulle metodologie per la diagnosi e la terapia delle malattie linfoproliferative e delle neoplasie solide, nel corso di un periodo di studio all’estero (settembre 1983 - ottobre 1986) presso il Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Lausanne Branch, Epalinges S./Lausanne (CH) e l’Istituto di Biochimica dell’Università di Losanna. In tale periodo di studio, si è occupato della produzione di anticorpi monoclonali, della loro caratterizzazione immunochimica e della loro applicazione alla diagnosi ed al trattamento secondo moderni disegni di immunoterapia, delle malattie sopra menzionate. Nel triennio 1° gennaio 1995 - 31 dicembre 1987 , gli è stata assegnata una borsa di studio dell’Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro (A.I.R.C., Milano), con la quale ha sviluppato programmi di immunoterapia sperimentale e clinica.
La maggior parte delle ricerche sono state svolte in collaborazione con l’Istituto di Anatomia Umana Normale, Istologia ed Embriologia dell’Università di Bari (Proff. Domenico Ribatti e Luisa Roncali); con il Dipartimento di Scienze Biomediche e Biotecnologie dell’Università di Brescia (Prof. Marco Presta); con il Centro di Biotecnologie Avanzate dell’Università di Genova (Dr.ssa Adriana Albini); con l’Istituto di Genetica e Biofisica del C.N.R. di Napoli (Dr.ssa Graziella Persico); con l’Istituto per la Ricerca ed il Trattamento del Cancro di Candiolo dell’Università di Torino (Prof. Federico Bussolino); con l’Istituto di Anatomia dell’Università di Göttingen (Dr. Fabio Quondamatteo): con il Dipartimento di Patologia dell’Università di Washington, Seattle (WA, USA, Prof. Roberto Nicosia).
