Our Ancestors in Fredericia: The Answer In 2003 I received some papers from Sherry Petersen in Oregon, indicating that we might have common ancestors. According to these papers her ancestor Jørgen Petersen (born 1851) should be a brother of my ancestor Ane Mette Petersen (born 1832 in Fredericia). My note from 7 December 2005 presented the information available at that time. It seemed likely that the two families knew each other, but a direct family connection could not be verified. Ane Mette and Jørgen could not have the same mother, because Ane Mette’s mother, Else, died 1841. In 1844 Ane Mette’s father, Søren Petersen, married the 20 years younger Ane Jensdatter. Question: Are Ane Jensdatter and Søren Petersen the parents of Jørgen Petersen? The public registration during the war and the siege of Fredericia in 1849 was incomplete, and I lost the track of the Petersen-family. It took some search to disclose the relation. Annex 1 shows a list of documents retrieved for the purpose. The Archive for Fredericia’s History has been a highly useful resource. The answer Marie Elisabeth ? † BEF 1834

The documents revealed a family pattern with a grid of half-brothers and -sisters born between 1828 and 1864 as shown in the diagram. Thus the family connection between Ane Mette Petersen and Jørgen Petersen has been confirmed. Together with partners and children these people formed a network with strong family ties for several decades. Two sons of Jørgen Petersen emigrated to USA and one to Argentina. Jørgen Petersens wife, Gertrude Augusta Leopoldine, made a note with birthdays and addresses of family members

Søren Petersen and Ane Jensdatter 1850-56 Søren, Ane and their daughter, Dorthea Bolette, probably went to Ane’s place of birth, Høll, during the siege in 1849. Due to lack of consistency in the use of family names at that time, the godmother, Ane Mette Sørensdatter, could be Jørgens 18 years old half-sister, Ane Mette Petersen. In 1854 a girl, Else Kirstine, was born. According to the 1855 census neither Dorthea nor Sørens children from his marriage with Else were living in the family:

Two boys, Søren and Jens, were born in 1861 and 1864. In 1866 Else Kirstine Pedersen died, 11½ years old. In 1876 Peder Sørensen died, 57¾ years old, leaving Ane Jensdatter again as a widow. She stayed in Ødsted Parish until her death, 64 years old, in 1884. The death record says that she drowned.
Dorothea Bolette Petersen One of the handwritten notes (annex 2) mentions Dorthea Petersen in Vejle. She was born 1845 in Fredericia as the second child of Søren Petersen and Ane Jensdatter. The first child, Else, did not survive. There is no evidence about Dorthea’s childhood, but in 1878 she married smallholder Mads Petersen in Jelling. Gertrude’s handwritten notes tell us that 33 years later Dorthea was living Vardevej 7e in Vejle with the son Andreas on the same address.
Locations in Fredericia
Ane Mette Petersen and Poul Nielsen in Fredericia 1852-79 Soon after her confirmation on 11 April 1847 Ane Mette Petersen left Trinitatis Parish in Fredericia for Follerup. In the 1850 census she is back in Fredericia as a servant in the house of factory owner Thor Ludvig Winterlig in Prinsessegade, site 231-232. Poul Nielsen was born 28 October 1825 in Løgsted Parish in the northern part of Jutland. His residence in 1850 is unknown, but he may have arrived in Fredericia for a job in Winterlig’s iron foundry. He worked as moulder in iron foundries for his entire professional career. Why not assume that Ane Mette found Poul among the workers in the foundry? The fact is that they married in Trinitatis Church in Fredericia on 3 September 1852.

Ane Mette and Poul settled in Bjergegade in a house belonging since 1858 to carpenter Peder Pedersen. They moved to Kongensgade before 1870. They got 10 children between 1853 and 1875 and lost 4 of them. One of the children, Ane Nielsen, has conveyed evidence about Ane Mette and Poul Nielsen to us. This includes a certificate confirming Poul’s membership of “de danske Vaabenbrødre” (a society of national defenders, founded 1859).
From 1875 Poul Nielsen worked for C.M.Hess in Vejle on the establishment of a new foundry. He died 1979 before the new plant was ready for operation. It is not known if the entire family moved to Vejle, but Ane Mette and her children could not be found in the 1880 census for Fredericia.
Jørgen and Gertrude Augusta Leopoldine Petersen 1885-1933 Gertrude was born 6 August 1862 on the island Fehmern in Germany. Gertrude and Jørgen married 30 October 1880 and came to Fredericia 1884 from Ringsted. There are only few details available on Jørgens activities between the Ødsted census in 1860 and the arrival of the couple in Fredericia 1884. Jørgen got a job at the weaving mill Bloch & Andresen Inc. He worked there as a dyer until his retirement 1 January 1925. In 1884 they had lost their 3-year old son, Søren. The next son Poul Christian Leopold Jørgensen Petersen was born on 2 January 1885 and baptized in Trinitatis Church Fredericia on 15 March 1885. The 1890 census shows their address as 13 Dronningensgade, 2nd floor. The house is now said to belong to the Pentecostal Mission in Fredericia. In 1901 the Petersen family has a new address according to the census: 53 Bjergegade, 1st floor. The household now includes the two sons Ægidius and Johannes and a lodger, Jørgen Rasmussen Sørensen. 1904 Jørgen Petersen takes over the property from master carpenter H. Petersen. Now a new apartment house has been built on the site.

In 1911 the household includes the two sons, one lodger (Thorvald Jørgensen), two deaf-mute foster children (Christian Larsen and Henning Petersen) and a relative, Christiane Petersen, widow, born 27 December 1837 on Fehmern and arrived in Fredericia 1910. Christiane is the mother of Gertrude. Gertrude and Jørgen stayed in 53b Bjergegade until they both died 1933.
Fredericia Dagblad, October 25, 1930:
Golden Wedding. th
On Thursday, the 30 , dyer Petersen and his wife, 53 Bjergegade, can celebrate their golden wedding. The groom has for many years – th st from September 27 , 1884, to January 1 , 1925, when he retired, been working at Bloch & Andresen’s factory. The popular couple, respectively 78 and 68 years old, enjoy in spite of their high age a good health. The couple’s children are three sons, who went abroad several years ago. Two of them are living in U.S.A. and the third in Argentina, so they cannot be expected to come home for the golden wedding. The many friends of the couple, especially the large number of deaf-mute boys, who have been fostered by the couple over the years, are supposed to commemorate dyer Petersen and his wife on their festive day.
Søren Johannes August Nielsen One of the handwritten notes very clearly specifies the address of Johannes Nielsen: Johannes Nielsen Hj. af Daleg. og Prinsensgade (Faders Søsters Søn)
Corner of Dalegade and Prinsensgade (Father’s sister’s son)
Søren Johannes August Nielsen was a son of Ane Mette and Poul Nielsen, born 23 December 1857. There are no church book records available after 1891, but the initials SJA make it easy to recognize him in the local directories. He was found in volumes from 1908-09, 1911, 191314, 1915-17, 1919-20, 1922-23 and 1924-25, but not 1926-27. His occupation has been specified as bookkeeper, staff sergeant and retired staff sergeant.

Further details have been found in the 1911 census. He was living 11 Dalegade, 2nd floor, with his wife, Magdalene Nielsen, born 12 August 1858, and their daughters, Klara Anna Nielsen, born 26 November 1890, and Johanne Margrethe Nielsen, born 24 November 1891. Magdalene was born in Fredericia. Her parents were Jacob Abraham Hermann and Ane Nielsen from Fredericia. The house must have been remarkable in 1910 with 4 stories and strange patterns in bricks and windows. Søren’s family must have had access to the small balcony in the corner.
Søren Pedersen’s family in Stallerup Søren Pedersen is another person from the handwritten notes: Søren Petersen Stallerup pr. Fredericia (Faders Halvbroder) Børn: Fættere: Eskild og Villy Kusiner: Signe og Anna
(Father’s half-brother) Children: Male cousins: Eskild and Villy Female cousins: Signe and Anna
Søren was born in Ødsted as a son of Ane Jensdatter and Peder Sørensen. Stallerup was a village, not far from Fredericia. Now only a couple of farmhouses are left. The 1911 census has the following details: Name of all persons

F. Duus, Den Johnsenske Stiftelse, Fredericia This heading is a quotation from the handwritten notes. "Den Johnsenske Stiftelse" in Øster Voldgade was a foundation. The founders were DanishAmericans, Caroline Johnson and Thomas Johnson. Carl Wille was a foster son of tailor Johansen in Fredericia. Carl came as ship’s boy to USA. First he joined the US Marine. Then he was a railway worker and advanced to become head of construction works in Texas. He changed his name to Thomas Johnson, probably inspired by the name of his stepfather. When he was well established in USA he married Caroline Thygesen from Fredericia. Their two children died as babies. When Caroline died 59 years old, he winded up his activities in USA and returned to Denmark. He died 1905 and willed his fortune to a foundation. Its purpose was to provide cheap accommodation for people over 60, preferably sailors and workmen.
The 1911 census has Carl Frederik Duus (born 7 July 1847 in Hanved 1 , Flensborg) and his wife, Maren, (born 1 February 1852 in Nørre Snede) living 2nd floor at "Den Johnsenske Stiftelse" in Øster Voldgade, Fredericia. The relations between the Petersen family and the Duus couple are not known.
Elise Jørgine og Jørgen Thor Jacobsen There are several references in the handwritten notes to children and grand children of Ane Mette Petersen and Poul Nielsen. Elise Jørgine Mette Marie Nielsen and her husband Jørgen Thor Jacobsen seem to have played a key role in the family grid. She is mentioned as “Tante Gine” in the notes as an abbreviation of Jørgine.

He was sailor on the ferries between Fredericia and Strib. They settled in Strib, but it is not known when they left Fredericia. They published this message in Fredericia Dagblad after the death of their first son on 20 July 1894. The note adds that Jørgen is dead. The date of his death is not known, but it must be before 1915.
Poul Jensen was Gine’s son from her first marriage with Frederik Jensen. Frederik left for America, but seemed to disappear. After some years the marriage was cancelled. Christian, Johannes, Thor, Thora and Etly were children of Gine and Jørgen. All boys became sailors, and Etly married a sailor, Hans Ejlerskov. Alice was Thora’s daughter. Gine stayed as a widow in Strib until her death in 1948.
Ane Nielsen (“Tante Ane”) Ane was like “Gine“ a daughter of Ane Mette and Poul Nielsen. She was born 28 July 1866 and remained single. She worked as a weaver at Bloch & Andresen’s weaving mill. Jørgen Petersen was dyer in the same factory. The weaving mill was established 1847 in Danmarksgade and expanded 1905 to the south along Bjergegade and Kongensgade 2 . It was an important driving force in 2

the development of Fredericia into an industrial center, and it gave employment to a lot of people. Today there is nothing left of the factory. Ane was living in the same house in Bjergegade from before 1908 to her death in 1942. In 1911 she was living on the top floor (3rd level) according to the census. It was not far from the weaving mill. The census shows that many residents in the area worked for Bloch & Andresen. The house is still there. From the beginning it was no 42. Numbers were changed. Now it is no 72. In 1940 Ane Nielsen handed over information and documents about her parents, Ane Mette and Poul Nielsen. Now technology has made it practicable to share the information with other successors. She deserves our gratitude for the initiative.
