Successivamente in seguito a processi estensionali a

he Apuan Alps are known in the whole world for marbles which in this region are extracted since more than two thousand years. Marble presence, Fig.1 Panoramica del bacino marmifero di Carrara General wiew of tha Carrara marble basin in particular of the celebrated Carrara white marbles is the result of a peculiar geological history which marks the Apuan Alps from the limitrophe reliefs of the Apennines. From the geological point of view, the Apuan Alps represent a tectonic window where the geometrical lowest units of the northern Appennines are exposed. This chain part of the Alpine orogenic system is the result of the tertiary deformation of the continental Italian-Adriatic margin on which fragments have been over written (Liguria Units) of an oceanic domain which separated Paleo-Europe from Africa during Mesozoic. The rocks which can be observed in the Apuan Alps are witnesses of the geologic history of a sector of earthly surface known as Tuscan domain in the geologic literature. About 240-250 Ma ago the region general landscape would have appeared very different from the present, an older mountain chain realized during a previous orogenic cycle, the Hercynian one, was almost completely dismantled by that time, the environment which showed semi-dry climate conditions was of continental type and only sea locally with development of reduced carbonatic platforms. Deposits of this type and age can be observed in the Apuan Alps (Vinca and Verrucano s.l. Formation comprising

cal temperature and pressure conditions. In the Apuan Alps region three main tectonic units are traditionally distinguished, from the top to the bottom: a) the Tuscan nappe characterized by a sedimentary succession comprising borders from the superior Trias to the inferior Oligocene-Miocene. This unit is characterized by a deformative evolution developed in metamorphic conditions of a very low degree (T ≤ 250/280 °C). It is namely a portion of the Tuscan margin remained at structural levels relatively superficial during all the deformative history; b) the Massa Unit comprising Palaeozoic and Triassic lithotypes which appear on the surface at the SouthWestern margin of the massif starting from Bedizzano up to the South of Pietrasanta; c) the "Apuan Autochthon" or better the Apuan unit which characterizes the most of the metamorphic nucleus. This unit is constituted by a Palaeozoic (metasediments and metavulcanites) basement and by a Permo-Triassic to Oligocene metasedimentary sequence. The pick (i.e. maximum) metamorphic conditions recorded by the units of Massa and Apuan Alps are valuated about 350-450°C for pressions between 6-8 Kb (equivalent to depths between 18-30 km).
On the base of deformation characteristics in the metamorphic units of the Apuan Alps structures are recognized attributable to two main tectonic events: ❒ the tangential event or D1, linkable to the continental collision. During this event, in which the setting of the tectonic units is realized, the rocks observable in the Apuan Alps, have been carried deeply into the crust, strongly deformed and transformed into metamorphic rocks; ❒ the late event or D2, to which structures are connected which deform those realized previously and accompany the progressive unearthing i.e. the going up again of the metamorphic units towards the surface. On the base of radiometric dating (K/Ar, Ar/Ar methods and fission traces) to the deformative history D1 an age comprised between 27 e 20 Ma can be given. While the passage of the metamorphic units under about 120 °C temperature (about 3-4 km depth) is valuated between 4 e 2 Ma. The complex way of rock volumes inside the crust is recorded in the deformation structures and in the associated mineralizations now observable in the Apuan Alps. Among the most spectacular deformative structures the folds, present from metric scale to plurikilometric scale, DIAMANTE Applicazioni & Tecnologia

are responsible of the spatial distribution of the marble levels in the territory (Fig.3).
Apuan Alps marbles In general terms, on the base of mesoscopic characteristics in the Apuan Alps can be distinguished into three main marble types: 1) massive and/or striped marbles mainly white with or without clear grey and/or dark "veins", lens or "spots", in this group are classified e.g. the market varieties of statuary, of white s.l., of with veined; 2) monogenic or poligenic breccia, “in situ”, matrix-supported or clasto-supported (e.g. decorated with arabesques); 3) grey marbles (e.g. bardiglio and cloudy); More than fifteen market and commercial varieties can be linked to these three main marble types quarried in the Apuan Alps. Published studies (see bibliography) associate the main differences in the basic mesoscopic aspect to their position and depositional environment inside the carbonatic Rhetian and moreover Liassic platform. To this originary differentiation and variability of “protolith” (i.e. originary rock) is superimposed to produce a mesoscopic variability,

mica locale.

the deformative history which can produce finished local strain states variable from zone to zone and which can generate unhomogeneous lithotypes (i.e. breccia) to an important variability of ornamentation testified e.g. by the type and by the elongation form of the clastic in marble breccia (which connects precisely to the form and to the ellipsoid type of deformation or finite strain). To this mesoscopic variability is superimposed a third type of variability represented by the marble micro-structural character which is function of two main factors: 1) lithotype compositional characteristics: i.e. fillosilicate and/or other mineralogical phases different by calcite, fundamental mineral component (present in quantities higher than 90%); 2) relation between deformation and thermal processes at a regional scale and deformation/thermal local history. Synthetizing the result of researches till now in progress inside Apuan marbles three basic micro-structure types can be distinguished illustrated in Fig.4. The first type or “A type”: it is characterized by a polygonal micro-structure grain-blastic (“foam”), a medium grain size variable between about 150 and 350 µm, a near isometric crystal shape and a weak preferential crystallographic orientation (LPO). A second micro-structural type or “B type”: it comprises marbles which show less or more important traces of dynamical reprocesses of the micro-fabric A type.
These marbles characterize for the presence of granular not linear borders, calcite more fine than the originary calcite and stronger crystallographic orientations dynamical re-crystallizations (LPO). A third micro-structural type or “C type” characterizes some less or more pure marble varieties (e.g. Calacatta and Zebrino commercial varieties) and locally grey marble bardiglio and cloudy type. The distinctive micro-structural characteristic is represented by an evident shape orientation (SPO) oriented at variable angles, generally low from 0 to 10-30° as regards the principal branching. Each of the basic micro-structural types presents a certain variability e.g. in grain size, intergrain border types and preferential crystallographic orientation, factors which combine to give physical-mechanical properties and different degrees of propensity to alteration phenomena.

The Extractive District of the Apuane Alps BY
T
GIANFRANCO DI BATTISTINI - UNIVERSITY OF PARMA - PROFESSOR OF APPLIED PETROGRAPHY DEPARTMENT OF EARTH SCIENCES
he extractive district of the Apuane Alps, which is located in the north western Tuscany, includes all the marble quarry areas of the Apuane Alps and surroundings. The whole district is located in the Massa Carrara and Lucca provinces and represents one of the most important extractive district in the world. It covers a large area extending for more than 30 km and for about 12 km SE-NW and in W-E respectively. However, the marble outcrops, useful for marketing, only cover 70-80 km2 (Fig.1). The extractive district of the Apuane Alps includes four quarry areas: Lunigiana area (Northern Apuane, L); Carrara and Massa area (Apuane, C and M); Versilia area (Southern Apuane, V); Garfagnana area (Eastern Apuane, G). Each area may be divided in quarry basins of minor rank, where the number of quarries depends on the extension of the marble-bearing horizons. In the Lunigiana area, the most important basins are Monte Sagro and Equi Terme-Casola. Four marble basins are located in the Carrara area: - Colonnata - Fantiscritti-Miseglia - Torano - Pescina Boccanaglia. The less extended basin is the Massa basin. It belongs to the Carrara and Massa area and only includes about ten quarries. In the Versilia area, the extractive activity is located in the Seravezza and Stazzema territories (Lucca province). In particular, the Mt. Altissimo basin, which includes two
important quarries (Cervaiole at SE and Cava La Buca at E), is noteworthy. The Garfagnana district is located in the north eastern part of Apuane Alps, close to the villages of Gramolazzo, Minucciano and Ugliancaldo. It includes the Arnetola, Acqua Bianca, Orto di Donna, Boana and Vagli basins. During 2004, the marble production in the whole district was about 1,200,000 t. 900,000 t in the Carrara area, which is the most productive area (Table 1).
Extractive activity in the Carrara area during the time In the Carrara area, a relevant activity of marble extraction is dated back to the Roman age, after the foundation in 177 B.C. of the Roman colony of Luni. Recent mineralogical-petrographic studies carried out on funerary artefacts attest the use of Apuane marble during pre-Roman age. In addition to the identification of Roman quarries in the lower valley of the Colonnata, Miseglia and Torano basins, the extractive activity is attested by archeological discoveries such as the “tagliate romane”. On the back side of a block, still connected to the main rock, a deep cut was done, the so called "tagliata". The cut was as deep as the height of the block to be extracted and very narrow but sufficiently large to allows hammer and chisel or pick excavation by a man (Fig.2). Excavation was essentially a manual work, which was done using simple tools; it needed a large loss of time and energy to obtain, in any case, modest results. The evolution of the working methods for the extraction are schematically reported below.

Manual working: during the Roman age, at least up to 1800 AD. Explosive: the beginning of excavation by using explosive is dated back to the end of 1700; this method became systematic starting from 1831. The effect produced by explosions was impressive: marble was broken down with consequent lowering of its marketing value. This technique accelerated excavation but generated a considerable increase of waste matter. The largest blocks were squared by hand on the quarry yard. Manual working and pneumatic drilling.

Helicoidal wire: the true revolution in the extractive technique took place at Carrara in 1895 with the introduction of the helicoidal wire. Large blocks may be produced by this process with small loss of useful material. Diamond wire: it was introduced in 1978-79. It is still used for both main cut and block squaring in the quarry. Diamond chain cutting machine: it is used mainly for marble main cutting (Fig.3).
Type of marble quarries Extractive activity was developed during the times in quarries of different types: 1) Open quarry; 2) Underground quarry; 3) “Sottotecchia” (vertical wall of rock) quarry. 1) The open quarries involve excavation of material at open air; they can be divided as follows: ❒ Summit type quarry: it is rather rare and located on the top of mountains from which the summit and/or the ridge are removed (Fig.4). ❒ Slope type quarry: it is the most common. This type of quarry is located on mountain sides; generally it assume a typical amphitheatre shape; the exploitation starts from the top and proceeds toward the bottom. Among the slope type quarries, the
Polvaccio quarry, which is located in Torano basin, is noteworthy. It is famous because selected by Michelangelo for some important works. Michelangelo visited the area the first time in 1497 with the aim of choosing marbles for the Pietà. According to many scholars, he visited again this quarry in 1505 and stayed there for a long time because he needed a large quantity of marbles to realize the tomb of the Pope Julius II (Fig.5). ❒ Ditch/shaft type quarry: funnel-shaped excavations developed vertically and until the limit of the concession. The cultivation proceeds progressively by lowering the quarry yard height. 2) Underground quarry: rather common, it develops into true tunnels which branch inside the mountain; huge rooms are created with ceiling supported by marble pillars. 3) "Sottotecchia" quarry: rather common, it is a quarry intermediate between the surface and underground quarry.
“Ravaneti” (Waste deposits) The extractive activity in the Carrara area produced a huge quantity of working waste deposits, which when poured along mountain sides near the quarry areas, are called “ravaneti” (Fig.6). An approximate estimation suggests that in a marble quarry the marketable material is 35 % of the total excavated material; therefore, during the year, about 2,000,000 t of working waste are added to the “ravaneti” for a marble block production of 1,000,000 t. Each active quarry has its own "ravaneto"; up to 630 active, inactive and dismantled "ravaneti" have been mapped; they are part of Apuane Alps landscape since a long time. It is noteworthy that the less stable recent “ravaneti” represent a main source of hydrogeological problems; Figura 6- Ravaneti nel bacino marmifero di Colonnata. actually, they give origin to importantColonnata landslide events Figure 6- “Ravaneti” can (Waste deposits) in marble-yielding basin. with mass transports of detrital material. mulano 2.000.000 di tonnellate di scarti di lavorazione che vanno ad incrementare i detriti dei ravaneti.
Materiali lapidei ornamentali I materiali lapidei ornamentali (Norma UNI 8458) comprendono tre categorie commerciali: graniti, marmi e pietre.

Ornamental stone
The Apuane marbles are carbonate rocks (limestone and minor dolostone) which re-crystallised under metamorphic conditions. Chemical analyses carried out on white marbles belonging to Carrara extractive area give 95-99 wt % CaCO3 (Table 2). Therefore the Apuane marbles can be considered as a homogeneous natural material consisting of calcite. Marbles have granoblastic structure, related to static re-crystallization, or xenoblastic structure, related to dynamic re-crystallization processes. Because of its quite pure (CaCO3 component) composition, the huge waste material of the "ravaneti" constitutes a very important geo-resource. At Carrara there are several industries which work marble waste for calcium carbonate production (powder, 0-2 mm in size; granulated material 2-20, mm in size). Because of its frequent use, this material is widely requested for marketing.
The ornamental stones (UNI 8458) comprise three different trade categories: granites, marbles and stones. The commercial definition of marble includes three different stone types: ■ Carbonate metamorphic rocks ■ Sedimentary rocks ■ Ultramafic metamorphic rocks. All these materials are used in decoration and building, and consist of minerals, such as calcite, dolomite or serpentine with hardness 3-4 of the Mohs scale. All the commercial marbles may be extracted and worked by the same techniques. The quality control of the stone material is more and more necessary because of the global marketing, which does not allow to only rely on the experience. For these reasons, the technical features of the ornamental rocks are attested by appropriate documents, which report exhaustive physical and mechanical data. Moreover the stones which circulate in the EU, must report the CE kite-mark. The CE mark is used as a quality guarantee for the buyers.
Block production
A quarry produces blocks, for which volume, shape and stone quality assume great importance. The best production consists of regular blocks (parallelepipedon shape) of about 6-8 m3. Three different degree of quality may be defined: ❖ First quality: chromatic and textural defects are not present. ❖ Second quality: some minor defects appear; they, however, do not compromise the product quality. ❖ Third quality: blocks of small size with grain, colour and vein defects. The structural defects are related to fractures. Three different types of defects related to fracturing are recognised: ◆ “peli” (“hairs”): open and evident small cracks; ◆ “peli furbi”: cracks few millimetres in lenght, which may be recognised when material is wet; ◆ “peli ciechi”: cracks which may be recognised only after block sawing. This terminology was already used in the sixteenth century. We know the Michelangelo’s request to his marble suppliers: the marbles must be "without “peli”, “vivi” (i.e. without incipient grain disgregation) and not “cotti” (i.e. with incipient grain disgregation), white and beautiful" and coming from the Polvaccio quarry.

1820 – Ettore Repetti descrive sette specie minerali (la maggior parte delle quali incluse nella massa marmorea piuttosto che all’interno Dolomite, aggregato selliforme di cristalli romboedrici madreperlacei; 1,5 cm; cave delle cavità). or more than two thousand years marble quarries located behind the town of Carrara gave a white marble of exceptional quality for sculptors and a quantity of amazing minerals for collectors. More recently search and discover of interesting samples of minerals extended to all the marble outcrops of the Apuan metamorphic complex and particularly marble outcrops located behind the town of Massa and Versilia. Mineral contained inside marbles are almost all not visible to whom that do not like to see them; or to whom that do not devote particular attention to them. In fact minerals are, it could be said, concealed inside marble cavities and fractures which constitute defects for the same marble, which are accurately avoided both in quarry by the quarrymen, for this reason, at the moment of extraction and by sale men and obviously by users. On the contrary mineral collectors are very careful and look for these defects of marble mass assiduously, defects which on the contrary conceal inside them unique naturalistic treasures in nature appreciated by collectors and scientists of the
In the same years Arturo Giampaoli wrote: “The cavities considered located inside white marbles of the superior lens reach their most large development in the white marbles of the inferior lens where additional minerals are distributed in a loose way”. From these words it is possible to understand the reason of the fascination of minerals of Apuan Alps marble cavities: their matrix, white like snow, the extreme scarcity of minerals which, for this reason develop almost exclusively insulated crystals, often coloured, more than confused crystal aggregates.

whole world. Sometimes these treasures are made by bright multi-centimetric crystals of hyaline quartz of rare beauty and purity, other times by highly searched crystals of rare mineralogical species with the most various shapes and colours which unfortunately are appreciable only with the aid of a good microscope due to their general small dimensions. Giovanni D’Achiardi, one of the pioneers of the mineralogical research on this topic, wrote in 1905 as follows: “Apuan Alps marbles include many minerals both disseminated inside their calcareous mass and sheltered inside cavities”.
Several mineralogical species, and particularly quartz and calcite, attracted the attention of naturalists from centuries, who published the results of their observations and discoveries periodically; the principal stages of this knowl edge way were the followings: 1597 - Agostino Del Riccio pointed out the presence of quartz crystals. 1820 - Ettore Repetti described seven mineral species (the most of which included inside marble mass more than inside cavities). 1872 - Antonio D’Achiardi described seven minerals of the cavities and different others of marble mass. 1911 - Giovanni D’Achiardi gave a complete description of 16 minerals inside cavities and others of marble mass, in his many memories. 2005 - Paolo Orlandi, after and more than 30 year study and tens of specific publications, describes more than 120 different minerals discovered inside cavities of which three discovered for the first time in nature. These three new mineralogical species have been named: DIAMANTE Applicazioni & Tecnologia

tozzi, prismatici cristalli vitrei incolori o lattescenti.

he most rare minerals, which usually can be found as very small size crystals, have nevertheless a fascination, both for scientists and amateurs, first of all for their rarity and moreover for the morphologic beauty determined by the bright colours which are in contrast with the whiteness of the marble where they are settled, and for the spectacular geometrical crystalline forms, appraisable with the aid of a good binocular microscope in order to obtain at least 20 - 40 magnifications. Minerals characterizing Apuan Alps marble cavities belong mainly to the class of the sulphides. Among these, the mineralogical species which more than others are typical of this occurrence are four: sphalerite, wurtzite, sulvanite and colusite. Sphalerite and wurtzite are two polymorphous phases of ZnS. Sphalerite crystallizes into the cubic system and in fact tetrahedral is the form and, at the same time, the more common habit the mineral shows itself inside marble cavities. Centimetric crystals of this sulphide have also
Crystals, almost always geminated, according to the spinel law, are made by the association of two or more crystalline individuals, mainly in tetrahedral habit; epitactic associations, usually with wurtzite, sulvanite, colusite and enargite are very common. The different mineralogical associated species share one or more of their own symmetry elements in these epitactic associations, creating odd, strange and fancy and hyper real buildings accomplishing to precise crystallographic and geochemical laws.

been discovered. The perfection and simplicity of the crystal morphology, clarity and transparency and warm colours, varying from yellow to red to brown through thousands of nuances, are the main characteristics of sphalerite crystals. Crystals with simple tetrahedral habit are particularly widespread in marble cavities of the Torano basin, while the red colour ones are more common in the quarries of the Fantiscritti zone and show not well defined habits and curved faces.
Wurtzite is the other phase of zinc sulphide existing inside marble cavities and usually it is found as pyramidal and/or prismatic hexagonal crystals accomplishing to symmetry laws that make this mineralogical species to crystallize in the hexagonal system. Its colour varies from dark red to brown; its dimensions vary from sub-millimetric to centimetric size; parallel associations of pyramidal crystals are common. Enargite, chalcopyrite and greenockite can be discovered in epitaxia on wurtzite crystals. All the mineralogical species grown together in epitaxia both on sphalerite and wurtzite are of later crystallization than the two hosting species. Sulvanite and colusite are two sulphosalts containing vanadium; both are rare in nature while they are rather diffused here in the Apuan Alps particularly in the Val Pulita quarry, located between Fantiscritti and Torano marble basins in the Carrara marble productive district; from this DIAMANTE Applicazioni & Tecnologia

Marble in Architecture Towards Its Reliable Use GIANNI ROYER-CARFAGNI DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE, UNIVERSITY OF PARMA
tarting from the study of the peculiar warping of the panels forming the façade of Alvar Aalto’s Finland Hall in Helsinki, the phenomenon of marble degradation due to granular decohesion of the constituent calcite grains is considered. We show that just a few degrees temperature increase, even when uniformly distributed inside the specimen, can produce, at the microscopic level, the granular decohesion which, at the macroscopic level, is revealed by a decay in the mechanical strength, a permanent dilatation and an increase of the open porosity. The attitude towards degradation of the various qualities of Carrara marbles is correlated with the shape of the calcite granes, whose microstructural arrangement can vary between the two borderline cases of homoblastic and xenoblastic textures. Taking into account geometric parameters commonly used in computer vision, shape coefficients are proposed which allow to pass from a qualitative to a quantitave description of the mosaic texture, and such parameters are shown to be correlated with the attitude towards degradation. In particular, xenoblastic marbles are more resistant than the homoblastic qualities. From this study an explanation of the granular decoesion and the warping phenomena of Finland Hall façade, taken as a paradigmatic example, are obtained. More in general, methods to determine the suitability of a given marble for its reliable use outdoors and practical countermeasure to prevent the degradation of marble claddings are proposed.

1. Introduction One of the possible definitions of Architecture is that it is the discipline whose purpose is the design of space. “Marble in Architecture” means that marble is conceived of as the element that defines and delimits space, with functional, structural and aesthetic characteristics. There are many articles made of marble that can be found in buildings or other architectural works, ranging from floors, wall facings, ornaments, structures like columns and capitals. In the modern building the structural role is lost, but marble is still being used extensively in the construction of the envelope, that is in façades, balustrades and external facings. Unfortunately, when in contact with external environment, marble may show in the long run noteworthy inconveniences. There have been a certain number failures, of which perhaps the most famous and representative are the cases of the AMOCO building in Chicago, and Alvar Aalto’s Finland Hall in Helsinki. The first one is a tall building at the beginning completely covered with Carrara marble; it happened that a few panels of the cladding suddenly fall down from a height of more than 300 meters. Because of this, and taking into account the possible danger, the cladding was later completely substituted with white granite. The main characteristic of the building in Helsinki, indeed one of the symbols of Finland, is that it is completely clad by white marble. The panels of the façades showed a strange and
somehow intriguing bowing phenomenon, uniformly distributed in the whole building. In 1999 the old panels where substituted with new ones still made of marble in order to maintain the original concept of the building imagined by Alvar Aalto. However, the new panels have started again to bow. Accidents like these occurred in other buildings, especially to those exposed to very cold climate. Because of the occurred problems, many experts in natural building stones believe that the use of marble in cladding or, more in general, its external use in direct contact with the environmental agents, has to be avoided. The purpose of this note is to try show that such an apodictic statement is not completely correct. Marble, and in particular Carrara marble, is a wonderful material that may be safely used outside, provided a reliable use of it is made starting from the design phase. More precisely, there are qualities of Carrara marble that are suitable for outdoor use and some others that are not. It is a task of the designer of the envelope to select those qualities that appear to be the most appropriate, proposing to the customer suitable solutions. In this paper, an attempt is made to clarify what this “reliable use” consists in. Starting from the results of long research project jointly supported by the City of Helsinki and the European Community, whose task was to study the degradation phenomena of Finland Hall’s façade, experimental results are presented which, corroborated by a microstructural motivated model, allow an insight about the possible causes of degradation of the

can be produced by uniformly heating marble slabs; the bowing phenomenon, however, could be only partially reproduced. Winkler stresses the need for moisture for marble slabs to buckle (Winkler, 1994, 1996), and intensive experimental research performed by the Finnish VTT (Mustonen, 1993) invokes acid-rain attack as the phenomenon’s cause. Observing thin sections of stone drawn from the façade, Bouineau and Perrier recognized a generalized loosening of rock cohesion (Bouineau & Perrier, 1995) caused by detachment of the marble’s constituent calcite grains one from the other: the grains remain integral, but it looks as if the cementing material between them has simply disintegrated. In effect, Finland Hall’s marble presents this classical tendency, called «sugaring», and can be reduced to a monocrystalline calcite powder with the pressure of a finger. This feature is common to several other documented cases of structural deficiencies in marble constructions (Franzini, 1995). The key point in understanding the phenomenon is consideration of the material underlying microstructure. The characteristic microscopic features of Finland Hall’s marble was recognized by impregnating small portions of the material with a red-coloured epoxy resin and observing thin sections of this mixture with an optical microscope. By this procedure, the interfaces between the grains, whenever open, appear highlighted by the red resin (Boineau & Perrier, 1995).
Tuttavia, all’interno non è stata trovata traccia dell'attacco chimico visto in Fig.3.
However, this method allows observations only at limited magnifications, it does not allow consideration of the slabs’ outer surfaces and, worse, may disturb the samples’ integrity to a considerable extent. A more sophisticated research program was conducted with the aim of selecting the best quality of marble for Finland Hall restoration (Royer-Carfagni, 2000). Analyses were performed on various samples taken from the façade using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The primitive state of the material before any degradation took place was examined in an undamaged marble slab situated in the interior of the building. The slab was seemingly made of the same material as that used for the external façade. The SEM images presented in Fig.2 illustrate portions of this specimen exhibiting a compact assemblage of grains from 0.1 mm to 0.4 mm in diameter assembled in a typical homoblastic texture. In particular, Fig.2b shows high magnification of a texture node where no apparent detachment is present. The concave surface of a bowed slab located on the southern wing of the building is instead presented in Fig.3. This coincides with the outer surface of the façade directly exposed to the action of rain and wind. Evident signs of superficial degradation, probably due to chemical attack, are clearly recognizable in these pictures. Carefully removing the very outermost layer, it was possible to observe that portion of the
marble located just below (at a depth of the order of 2-3 grain diameters) the outer surface of the slab. Fig.4 depicts such portions, whose main feature is the very pronounced calcite-crystal grain decohesion (Fig.4b, in particular). However, the chemical attack seen in Fig.3 was not found inside the specimen. The micrographs in Fig.5 represent the other, convex bowed, surface of the same marble slab. This was in contact with the spongy-material insulation panels located in the air space between the building and its cladding. Traces of sulfates were found in the insulation, and it is our impression that this material could have been imbued with acid rain, very common in Finland. In fact, although the joints between the marble panels were completely sealed with a white plaster (for architectural purposes), the façade was not water-proof, since rain could surely seep in from other openings. What is worse, the effect of this seal was to limit air circulation between the building and façade. At 5000x magnification (Fig.5b), the presence of calcium sulphate crystals is clearly evident. These are immediately recognizable by their characteristic size (≈ 1-5 µm) and oblong shape. The presence of sulfur in these grains is also confirmed by wave diffraction scanning (WDS) performed along the marked line in Fig.6. Close observation of the pictures reveals that the presence of traces of calcium sulfate crystals is limited

to within a few grain-diameters’ depth from both external faces of the panel surface - a finding which would indicate that chemical aggression should be considered a surface phenomenon. As a matter of fact, calcium sulfate traces are more evident in proximity of the internal surface than in proximity of the external surface of the façade (Fig.3). This is probably due to natural washing effects where it is directly exposed to the actions of rain and wind, but the signs of chemical attack remain very evident. Indeed, when WDS analysis is performed on an inner portion of the material, images similar to Fig.6b result, regardless of whether the sample was close to the internal or the external surface of the façade. Traces of sulfates are almost negligible, but as a peculiar feature, the concentration is clearly the highest at grain boundaries. This is a sign that acid rain may penetrate inside the material. However, from the results of this research that will be exposed later on, we may conjecture that sulfate penetration is a consequence, rather than the reason, of granular decohesion itself. Sometime, the warping of marble panels is attributed to the release of the internal, self-equilibrated, state of stress originated by tectonic pressure. Fig.7 represent the warping of a marble gravestone produced by the aforementioned phenomenon. Two features are evident: first, the warping is irregular, far from being as uniform as that of

undergone the aforementioned thermal cycles, here referred to as [Nat], [100], [180], [20-40], respectively. The degradation produced by thermal treatments is really evident, but such a sensitivity is not common to all types of marbles. Fig.11 reports the results of similar tests for another type of Carrara white marble, here referred to as “material C”, which clearly shows a better attitude to withstand thermal cycles. It is well known that granular decohesion can be produced, either naturally or artificially, by causes of various nature acting through mechanical, rather than chemical, mechanisms. One example is that of soluble
salts, which may penetrate deeply and cause expansion of pre-existing transgranular cracks due to a volume increase during the process of crystallization, when the solvent evaporates (Franzini, 1995). Repetition of load cycles (fatigue tests) is another example; this time the effect being due to elastic anisotropy of the constituent calcite grains (RoyerCarfagni & Salvatore, 2000). However, temperature variations are the most well known cause of granular decohesion (Royer-Carfagni, 1999a), hence the term «marmo cotto» (i.e. baked marble) used for centuries by quarrymen in Carrara to denote any marble presenting poor mechanical properties. This effect is due to the anisotropy of the thermal expansion of calcite, and can also be produced by temperature rises of just a few degrees uniformly distributed throughout the body (Royer-Carfagni, 2004). Since granular decohesion is always accompanied by opening of intergranular cracks, volume increase and a consequent permanent dilatation should be its counterparts at the macroscopic level. Marble bowing in Finland Hall could thus be explained assuming a gradient of the decohesion level through the slab thickness, which induces a different elongation between the internal and the external fibers. The reasons why the granulardecohesion level should vary through the slab thickness may be numerous and different in type. In any case, careful in-situ measurements have demonstrated that temperature may vary between the
inner and outer surface of the façade due to the building internal heating; differences in the humidity level, also confirmed by measurements, might as well play an important role. To investigate this phenomenon, a series of tests was performed using a high-sensitivity dilatometer of the type represented in Fig.12, able to record the expansion of marble consequent to temperature variations (Royer-Carfagni, 2004). Since granular decohesion implies volume increase, the permanent dilatation may represent an index of the amount of damage produced. Different qualities of Carrara marbles were considered. Fig.13 shows the results for the same A-type marble of Fig.10. Specimens were subjected to quasi-static thermal cycles varying from approximately -50°C up to +55°C and their dilatation continuously recorded by the experimental apparatus. Five different phases can be recognized in the material response. The first one, in Fig.13 referred to as (a), corresponds to the first temperature increment, from t=+20°C (room temperature) to t=+55°C. Notice the superlinear growth of thermal strain, which should be compared with the slope of the straight line also drawn in the Figure, corresponding to the theoretical average dilation of pure calcite (α=12·10-6 °C-1). The greater expansion of the composite (marble) with respect to the component (calcite) can be attributed to the development of cracks. SEM investigations show that these are intergranular in type as in Fig.8b.
The cooling stage can be conveniently distinguished into three branches: phase (b), from t=+55°C to t=+30°C; phase (c), from t=+30°C to t=-40°C; phase (d), from t=-40°C to t=-50°C. The main difference between (b) and (c) is that the graph in (b) is pseudo-horizontal, whereas the beginning of (c) is indicated by a sudden change in the slope. This can be explained assuming that the frictional contact among the grains prevents an instantaneous recovery of the strain. Reverse sliding starts only at the beginning of phase (c) and then gradually slows down, as logically expected, when the temperature is further decreased. This may be a confirmation that the dilatation accumulated during phase (a) should be, at least partially, attributed to sliding of the grains. The distinguishing character of phase (d) consists in the fact that, lowering the temperature beyond a certain limit, the material expands rather than further contracting. This phase can be correlated with the breaking of intergranular bonds subsequent to the incongruent granular contraction at low temperatures, and the consequent opening of cracks. Finally, if at this point temperature is increased again, the material starts to expand once more, entering phase (e). The distinguishing character of (e) is that the slope of the corresponding graph is almost parallel to that of phase (b), an evident sign, in our interpretation, of the significant role played by friction. Phase (e) ends at t≈+30°C. It is important to notice that if the cycle had stopped at DIAMANTE Applicazioni & Tecnologia

Ancora una volta, analogamente alla fase (d) di Fig.13, si nota una caratteristica espansione quando la temperatura scende al di sotto di un certo limite. room temperature (t=+20°C), marble would have shown a significant permanent dilatation. In further cycles the strain follows a similar characteristic trend, where all the five aforementioned phases can again be recognized. A few comments are however necessary. First of all, the slope of the graphs referring to phases (b) and (e) goes slowly increasing, an indication that the internal friction diminishes with ongoing cycles, probably do to the smoothening out of the contact surfaces. Secondly, the beginning of phases (a), characterized by superlinear growth of strain with temperature, is shifted rightwards with ongoing cycles. For example, it was around 33°C in the 2nd cycle; it becomes around 42°C at the 9th cycle. What is even more important is that, as it is clear also from Fig.13, the volume increase occurring in phases (d) diminishes with cycling. This is a characteristic of ongoing damage. The higher is the number of thermal cycles the specimen has undergone, the lower is the number of bonds that can be broken if a new cycle is performed. In fact, roughly speaking, if the weakest bonds have already been broken in the previous history, the strongest bonds are the ones that remain active (Royer-Carfagni, 1999b). One-sided thermal variations may as well produce a permanent dilatation. Fig.14 represents, for example, the response of the same A-type marble when its temperature is varied from +20°C to -35°C (the two pictures refer to cycles 1-2 and 4-5 respectively).
Again, similarly to phase (d) in Fig.13, we notice a characteristic expansion when the temperature is decreased beyond a certain limit. However, such contribution decreases very quickly at each cycle, as Fig.14b confirms. These experiments show that, in general, two-sided thermal conditioning may be more dangerous than one-sided variations. In order to investigate the influence of moisture, wet sample were also tested. The diagrams for the same A-type marble of Figs.13 and 14, but now in wet conditions, are reported in Fig.15. What should be noticed here is the first phase, again referred to as phase (a), which produces a much larger dilatation than for the dry sample in Fig.13. Correspondingly, also the dilatation at very low temperatures, called again phase (d), is much less than in Fig.13. This is an evidence that the effect of humidity is that of facilitating the relative sliding of the grains. In rough words, we may say that humidity acts as a “lubricant”. These considerations, especially those concerning humidity, may only be considered conjectural at this time. It is however expected that at least some of the questions mentioned will be clarified by further studies. In summary, we can affirm that thermal variations can produce granular decohesion similar to that observed in Finland Hall façade and produce, at the macroscopic level, the permanent dilatation of marble.

Fig.16 represents, in semi-logarithmic scale, the measured permanent dilatation as a function of the number of thermal cycles from -50°C to +55°C performed on three different marble types. It is noteworthy that such graphs are, approximately, represented by straight lines. The slope of each graph may thus be an index of the material attitude to damage: smaller slopes correspond
to more durable materials (RoyerCarfagni 2004). The reason why different qualities, apparently equal, behave differently has to be found, as will be shown in the next Section, in the microscopic arrangement of the crystals.

4. Microstructural characterization of marbles Any marble is composed for more than 99% of pure calcite, whereas the other accessory components have pratically no influence on the mechanical properties even if they are responsible of chromatic effects, likewise the veining. The main difference in the examined types consists, at the microscopic level, in the textural arrangement of the constituent calcite grains, which may range between the two extreme cases usually referred to as homoblastic (or granoblastic) and xenoblastic. Thin sections of the two borderline cases of such textures are represented in Fig.17. Of course, due to the higher imbrications, granular decohesion is certainly more favored in homoblastic than in xenoblastic marbles. This is at least partially confirmed by the fact that the line with lowest slope in Fig.16 (Diamante A&T n°44) corresponds to xenoblastic marbles. Since so far the study has suggested that the grain texture may be a major qualifying characteristic, here we propose a simple method to describe the microstructural textures, based on the quantitative classification of the geometric shape of the grains by means of indicators, likewise the grain area A, the perimeter p or

the skeleton s, primarily used in the field of computer vision. There may be other indicators of the form and shape of the grains, an example of which is the Paris Factor, but this has not been considered here. Besides the material classification, we will examine now a possible correlation between the microstructural parameters and mechanical macroscopic properties, likewise bending strength or porosity. Recent studies have in fact evidenced that many material properties may be influenced by the underlying microstructure. For example, in (RoyerCarfagni, 1999a) the resulting state of stress in grains subjected to uniform thermal variations has been considered. This stress is originated by the springing apart of contiguous grains due to the anisotropic thermal expansion of calcite, since the grains are randomly oriented. In (Royer-Carfagni 1999a) it has been shown that the most dangerous state of stress is at the grain borders, in particular at the texture nodes where more than two grains converge at one point. More in particular, the sharper are the grain corners, the less dangerous is the resulting stress, a finding which might suggests that xenoblastic marbles are more resistant than the homoblastic qualities. The experimental investigation of (Franzini, 1983) seems to confirm this trend. Another example is given by the

fatigue response of marbles subject to cyclic uniaxial (Royer-Carfagni e Salvatore, 2000). Also in this latter case, tests have confirmed that xenoblastic marbles are, as a rule, more resistant than the homoblastic ones. In conclusion, a quantitative microstructural characterization can allow a prediction of macroscopic mechanical properties and, what is more important as evidenced in (Royer-Carfagni 1999a), an indication of the material natural attitude to granular decohesion thermal damage. Observation of material thin sections (Fig.17) has suggested the following qualitative considerations (Forlani et.al., 2000). Homoblastic textures contain convex grains of various size closely packed together, whereas grains of almost the same dimensions, mainly concave shaped, form xenoblastic textures. Therefore, it is natural to consider as representative parameters, able to describe the shape of the grains, the area A and the perimeter P. In fact, for the same value of P, the area is smaller for concave than for convex grains. Therefore, the ration A/P2 may give an effective, quantitative parameter of the degree of “homoblasticity”. Other characteristic parameters of the grain shape may be considered. In particular, we may refer to shape indexes usually employed in Computer Vision (CV) (Gonzales & Woods, 1992), developed in particular

proposed. The ration P/S, as expected, cannot be correlated. It is interesting to compare the mechanical and physical properties of such marbles, taken again from the technical literature (Gattiglio et al., 1980) with the characteristic indexes of their microstructural arrangement. In Fig.19 we report the bending strength σf as a function of the shape coefficient A/P2. Observe that, in general, xenoblastic marbles are stronger than the homoblastic varieties. The value of the deviation R2, defined as:

where N is the number of elements Yj of the population and Y is the corresponding average value, is also reported in the graphs in correspondence of the interpolation line, obtained using the least squares approximation. The value R2≈0.165, sufficiently high, indicates a reasonable correlation between bending strength and degree of “xenoblasticity”. In general homoblastic marbles are weaker than xenoblastic marbles. The correlation obtained through A/P2, A/S2, A/(P•S) are very similar (Forlani et.al., 2000) but they have not reported here for the sake of conciseness. Of course, not all the material properties are correlated with the microstructural shape coefficients. For example, the weight per unit volume γ, reported in Fig.20 as a function of
the parameter A/S2, has clearly nothing to do with the microstructural arrangement. This is evidenced by the poor value R2≈0.015 of the deviation, indicated in the same figure. A similarly poor correlation is exhibited by the impact resistance h. This is not surprising because the cracks produced during the impact are mainly long, transgranular (cleavage) fractures, upon which the grain microstructural arrangement can only have a limited influence. Analogously, we cannot notice appreciable correlation between the abrasion depth α and the shape parameters A/P2, A/S2, A/(P•S). A particular attention should be paid to the graphs representing the water adsorption coefficient Ic, reported in Fig.21. Also in this cases, as should have been expected, xenoblastic marbles present smaller values for Ic than homoblastic marbles. For what the water adsorption coefficient is concerned, we notice a very good correlation (R2≈0.5) between the interpolation line and the experimental points, a finding for which an explanation can be proposed. A common practive prescribes that the specimen is dried up at around 100°C before it is merged in water. But we have sufficiently demonstrated that such a temperature level is sufficient to destroy the material microstructure by provoking granular decohesion (RoyerCarfagni, 1999a). Experiments and theoretical modeling have confirmed that xenoblastic textures present a greater resistance towards granular decohesion than homoblastic textures. Consequently, we may reasonably conjecture that this testing procedure is not completely sound, since the
measured open porosity after heating the specimen at 100°C is not the same of a “virgin” material, but rather that induced by the thermal treatment. In other words, the water adsorption Ic, as presently measured, is a measure of the material attitude towards granular decohesion, rather than a measure of the open porosity itself. In this sense, the results here obtained indirectly confirm the soundness of the approach, i.e., the possibility of characterizing through the microstructural examination some significant material properties. Very similar considerations to those for the coefficient Ic can be advanced for what the thermal dilation coefficient α is concerned (Forlani et.al., 2000). A further comment deserves the graph of Fig.22, reporting to the correlation between the compression strength σc and the parameter A/S2 (the correlation with A/P2, A/S2, A/(P•S) are similar). On the contrary to what one might have been expected, there is not an appreciable correlation between σc and the shape parameters, as evidenced by the extremely low values of the variance (R2≈0.01). This is because the compression failure (especially when cubic specimens are used) is, as a rule, almost “explosive”, with the consequent occurring of macrocracks. Fractures are mainly transgranular and, consequently, the influence of the microstructural arrangement is limited. An analogous consideration is valid for the compression strength measured after freezing and thawing cycles, for which we have noticed a lower dispersion (R2≈0.05) than for the graphs in Fig.22 (Forlani et.al., 2000), a finding which could be explained through the less DIAMANTE Applicazioni & Tecnologia

resistance towards freezing and thawing of xenoblastic marbles with respect to the homoblastic qualities. In any case, as a general tendency, we can conclude that the compression test in not correlated with possible differences at the microstructural level. In summary, for the 20 different qualities of Carrara marble considered, we have shown that xenoblastic marbles present higher flexural strength, smaller water absorption, smaller coefficient of thermal dilatation, higher elastic modulus, than the homoblastic qualities. Other mechanical properties, likewise the compression strength (even after freezing and thawing cycles) or the impact-test resistance, which mainly depend on the development of transgranular microfractures, are not correlated with the shape parameters. However, a very good correlation has been noticed for the coefficient of water absorption, which increases almost linearly with the values of any of the shape-parameters A/P2, A/S2 and A/(P•S).

Experimental observations have provided a wealth of evidence that just a few degrees’ temperature increase, even when uniformly distributed in the specimen, are sufficient to provoke the progressive detachment of the calcite granules of which marble is constituted. The characteristic feature of the phenomenon is that the grains remain integral, hardly showing any traces of transgranular cleavage

fracture, but rather look as if their cementing material had been gradually destroying. We recall that possible explanations of the decohesion phenomenon essentially involve three different possible causes: i) the chemical-physical attack of sulfates and chlorides (Winkler 1994); ii) the mechanical action of soluble salts which, penetrating in a solution, increase their volume when the solvent evaporates and may expand existing cracks (Franzini, 1995); iii) thermal variations, which may cause a self-equilibrated state of stress inside the material (Royer-Carfagni, 1999a). Particular hygrometric conditions may, of course, have a synergetic effect with the other causes. Despite a universal agreement has not been found yet, our personal experience seems to suggest, albeit tentatively, that the agents i) and ii) have a side importance, at least for the paradigmatic case of Finland Hall. Examination of the curious bowing phenomenon occurred in a number of other monuments, shows that chemical attack is confined to the superficial crust and hardly any trace of soluble salts can be found inside the slab, despite the evident signs of granular decohesion. We will now focus our attention on the effects of thermal variations and we will propose a simple micromechanically motivated model, which can provide an explanation of the degradation process in marbles subjected to thermal changes. In our interpretation, the causes of decohesion are attributed to the anisotropy of the thermal expansion of calcite. Calcite crystallizes in the rhombo-
hedric form and, as a result of this asymmetry, its coefficient of thermal expansion is greater in the direction of the optic axes than at right angle to that. Consequently, since the grains of marble are usually randomly oriented, any temperature increase, even if uniform, may produce the springing apart of contiguous grains, resulting in a self-equilibrated state of stress. In order to present a qualitative model, which without redundant hypotheses reproduces all but the basic features of the phenomenon, we consider a marble portion composed of a certain number of identical calcite grains in generalized plane stress or plane strain. Rigorously speaking, 21 elastic constants are necessary to represent the elasticity of calcite, but here we will assume, at least as a first order approximation, that the material is elastically homogeneous and orthotropic. Analogously, we will assume thermal orthotropy with respect to the same directions of elastic symmetry. Therefore, referring to a particular orthogonal system of axes (x1,x2), the constitutive relations for the material here considered can be written in the form:
where σij and εij (i,j=1-2) represent the components of stress and strain respectively, whereas ∆t denotes the temperature increase. For what the elastic moduli and coefficients of thermal expansion is concerned, if x2 is DIAMANTE Applicazioni & Tecnologia

strain softening.

oriented in the direction of the optic axis of calcite, we assume from the Literature (Winkler, 1994) the values reported in Tab.2. The simplest assemblage of crystal granules that can conveniently represent the phenomenon is presented in Fig.23. Here, the constituent squareshaped grains are identical, but are differently oriented. In particular, the local x1 axis of those grains labeled with an A letter is horizontal, whereas the B grains are rotated of 90°. The deformation of the assemblage consequent to a temperature variation, in particular for a temperature decrease, is qualitatively of the type represented in Fig.24a. The resulting grain shapes are the consequence of the anisotropic thermal expansion of calcite which, because of the particular orientation of the orthotropy axes, produces the springing apart of contiguous grains and the nucleation of an internal stress state. Of course, if all the grains were oriented in the same direction, the resulting deformation would have been as in Fig.24b, because now the deformation of contiguous grains would perfectly fit together. It is interesting to notice that there are materials in nature composed of iso-oriented calcite grains.
to quando i grani vengono premuti insieme.
Onyx is a representative example and for such a material, consistently with the data in Tab.2, the coefficient of thermal expansion is negative when measured in particular directions. For such materials, thermal variations do not to induce granular decohesion. Of course, in order to pass from a qualitative to a quantitative prediction, it is fundamental to model the interface cohesive forces between any two contiguous grains. From an experimental point of view, this is a formidable task that can be only partially completed. Albeit tentatively, the interface contact forces are simulated by truss elements, much shorter than the grain diameter, obeying to an elastic, non-linear, softening constitute relation. The bars are of two different types and, for convenience, will be referred to using the labels s and n. Elements n are placed at right angle to the grain boundaries, whereas the s elements are at 45° with respect to them, forming the diagonal of an ideal truss. It is clear that, to the first order, the s-elements model the contact layer response to shear actions. The constitutive relationship for the n-type bars is represented in Fig.25a. The slope of the compression branch, indicated with Kn, has been calculated to be comparable to the elasticity of calcite itself, in order to reproduce the contact forces when grains are pressed together. Representative parameters for what the tensile response is concerned are represented by the peak load and peak strain Fpn and εpn and by the ultimate strain εun. These parameters have been calculated from direct tensile tests (Cattaneo & Rosati, 1999) described in (Iori & Royer-Carfagni, 2001), here not reported for the sake of conciseness. Assuming that the stress is uniformly distributed across the crack surface, it has then been possible to
estimate Fpn and to measure both εpn and εun. The corresponding fracture energy, has been compared with the specific fracture energy obtained with an alternative experimental procedure (Belletti et al. 2000). The constitutive relationship for the s-type elements is instead represented in Fig.25b. This is an odd function in the strain and the corresponding parameters εps and εus have been taken, as a first order approximation, equal to εpn and εun. Besides, we have taken Fps=Fpn. We understand that this procedure is not scientifically sound, but our aim here consists mainly in reproducing the phenomenon of granular decohesion, rather than presenting a precisely-calibrated quantitative model. More refined experimental techniques will be necessary for the proper determination of all these representative parameters. For a representative grain, Figs 26a and 26b represent the normal and tangential components of contact stress for the simulation of Fig.24a. Such values have been calculated assuming that the axial load in the truss elements is uniformly distributed upon an appropriate portion of the grain boundary. In general, since we assume that both strains and local rotations are small, the s-type members are responsible of the shear stress, whereas both s and n-type members contribute to the normal component. Commenting first Fig.26a, we notice that the resultant of the normal stress acting on each one of the sides of the grain is practically zeroed. We also observe that, in general, the central portions on each side is compressed whereas tensile stresses act in proximity of the grain corners, particularly in the direction where the material shrinks the
most. The shear stress diagram, reported in Fig.26b, is, by symmetry, represented by odd functions. It is interesting to notice that, apart from a small central portion, important shear stresses are present on the whole grain boundary. This is not surprising since it is clear, observing also Fig.24a, that the anisotropic thermal expansion induces the relative “sliding” of continuous grains, which is opposed by the shear resistance of the interface layer. The decay of the shear stress on the horizontal sides of the grain, in proximity of the grain corners, is due to the yielding of some of the s-elements there located, which enter the softening branch (Fig.25b). In particular, yielding is in general achieved in the diagonal truss members connecting the corners of the grains at a texture node. Such point, as it is clear also from Fig.24a, is usually the “critical” point of the assembly. An interesting case is that of a very particular marble type, here referred to as type V, whose thin sections are represented in Fig.27a. The peculiarity of this is that each constituent grain is formed by geminated crystals. A schematic model may be obtained with the same chessboard assembly of Fig.23, with the difference that here each grain is formed by diversely chessboard-oriented elements, while in the former cases each grain was formed by equally oriented elements and the chessboard arrangement was formed by the constituent grains. It follows that the response of each grain is, in the average, isotropic. The numerical simulation corresponding to the case of V-type marble is represented in Fig.27b, where the differences with the simulations of Figs.24a-b is immediately detectable. In particular, the grain-to-grain interface is not DIAMANTE Applicazioni & Tecnologia

stressed. It should be mentioned that V-type marbles showed excellent response in the dilatometric tests in the sense that permanent dilation was negligible and the specimen showed a thermal strain varying almost linearly with temperature. In conclusion, despite all the approximations introduced which render any consideration valid only at the qualitative level, the model appears capable of reproducing the basic features of the granular decohesion damage due to thermal actions. The numerical simulation shows that, in agreement with an approximate analytical solution discussed elsewhere (Royer-Carfagni, 1999a), the stress state is the most critical at the grain borders, thus justifying the intergranular, rather than transgranular, nature of fractures. Moreover, stress concentrations appear at the grain corners, in proximity of the texture nodes. Such concentrations produce the yielding of the neighboring truss elements (modeling the interface layer), an indication of ongoing damage in the cohesive bonding between the grains. In particular, we can infer that the collapse mechanics is due to shear stresses which, similarly to mode II fracture, produce the relative sliding of the grain boundaries. As a final remark, the model indicates that, as a consequence of plausible constitutive laws for the cohesive interface layer, negative temperature variations are more dangerous than positive variations because they are associated with larger tensile stress. This finding provides a possible explanation of why, as confirmed by experience, marble deterioration is more pronounced in monuments exposed to cold rather than warm climates.

EXPLANATIONS FOR GRANULAR DECOHESION
AND BOWING OF THE FAÇADE PANELS OF
FINLAND HALL, TAKEN AS
A PARADIGMATIC EXAMPLE
The degradation experienced in Finland Hall façade, as discussed in Section 2, is certainly due to marble granular decohesion. SEM microscopic investigation have shown with no doubt that the calcite constituent grains detach the one from the other, with no sign of transgranular fracture. Many are the causes which can produce granular decohesion. What is certain is that thermal variations, even when uniformly distributed throughout the specimen, can produce a kind of damage that presents the same microscopic characteristics of the damage observed in Finland Hall façade. SEM investigations have in fact evidenced the characteristic signs of granular decohesion: intergranular fractures and grain detachment. Our tests have provided a wealth of evidence that weathering agents, such as humidity and acid rain, may have a synergetic action with temperature variations, accelerating the degradation process. In particular, humidity facilitates the relative sliding of the constituent grains, accelerating the eventual rupture of the interface bonding. In order to pass from a qualitative to a quantitative description, further studies are however necessary. The attitude towards granular decohesion varies from marble to marble. Our research has always shown that, as a rule, the amount of damage introduced through thermal conditioning is greater in homoblastic than in xenoblastic marbles. The reason for these has been explained in
Section 4, when discussing the correlation between grain texture and mechanical properties, and in Section 5, by means of a microstructural motivated model. In practice, the connection resistance offered by the wiggly grain contours of xenoblastic marbles is certainly greater than that offered by the homoblastic qualities. One of the most interesting results of this study is that the mosaic texture is one of the major qualifying characteristics to select marbles able to endure other the years. The dilatometric experiments, briefly discussed in Section 3, have demonstrated that granular decohesion produces, at the macroscopic level, a permanent dilatation of the specimen. The amount of permanent dilatation is strongly dependent upon the type of thermal conditioning. In particular, the larger the temperature intervals and the higher the number of cycles, the greater the dilatation results. The presence of humidity may accelerate the degradation process. Therefore, there are reasons to believe that the warping of the façade panels is due to a gradient of the granular decohesion level through the marble thickness. Careful in-situ measurements have confirmed that the thermal-hygrometric conditions are different between the inner and the outer surface of the façade slabs. Such difference is much greater than we would have expected. Comparing the results of dilatometric tests with the thermal-hygrometric condition measures in situ, it can be calculated that such differences may be sufficient to provoke warping of the marble panels. Bowing can also be produced by the release of internal stress stored in marble portions due to millenary tectonic
pressures. However, in our opinion, the symptoms are quite different from those noticed in Finland Hall. Moreover, fixing and joining of the marble panels does not seem to have a consistent influence on the bowing phenomenon. The photographs of the warped panels of the old façade clearly show that also slab portions completely free from any constraint bent in a double-curvature surface. Such a curvature can be explained only assuming an isotropic dilatation, though different between the inner and the outer surfaces. Similarly, panel size do not alter sensibly the resulting curvature of the deformed slabs. Of course, assuming the curvature to be constant, the resulting sag will be proportional to the slab width and height, but this is a matter of appearance only. There are no reasons to justify why the granular-decohesion damage should be affected by the panel size, since it results from a completely independent physical process. However, panel thickness may influence bowing for two reasons. On the one hand, the thicker is the panel, the greater is the thermal insulation it presents. Consequently, thick panels increase the thermal-hygrometric differences between the inner and outer surfaces of the cladding, thus producing a different rate in the degradation process. Since warping is due to damage gradient through the panel thickness, from this point of view thin slabs are preferable. On the other hand, for the same differences of permanent-elongation between inner and outer surfaces, the resulting curvature is inversely proportional to the panel thickness. Following this second rationale, thin panels should be avoided. Despite these aspects have not been DIAMANTE Applicazioni & Tecnologia

fully investigated, we believe that the first and second effects more or less compensate one another, at least for thickness of the order of 2-4 cm. On the other hand, the façade ventilation has a primary influence on the bowing phenomenon, since it may increase possible differences in the thermal-hygrometric conditions between the inner and the outer surfaces of the cladding. In particular, scarcely efficient ventilation might produce higher temperature and, what is more, higher humidity in the ventilation gap. On the other hand, very effective ventilation might produce the opposite result. In other words, there are reasons to believe that the bowing degree and, in some cases, even the direction of bowing (convex vs. concave) might depend upon the efficiency of the ventilation. Failure mechanism for damaged panels is rather subtle. Unfortunately, macroscopic signs of granular decohesion are hard to find. The damaging action is very slow, but eventually, as the experience with the old façade confirms, marble reduces to an almost inconsistent aggregate of granules, with almost zero mechanical resistance and that can be reduced to powder with the simple finger pressure. Of course, destructive tests can reveal the decay of mechanical properties, but no signs of progressing granular decohesion can be noticed with the naked eye. From this point of view, warping can be a useful indicator of damage progression, but there might be also cases (for example when both slab surfaces are in the same thermo-hygrometric conditions) where damage is not accompanied by bowing. In this case, failure might unexpectedly occur, with the risks we can all imagine.
6.2 ASSESSMENT OF THE
SUITABILITY OF A GIVEN MARBLE
FOR FAÇADE CLADDING
The resistance of the cementing forces that connect the calcite constituent granules appears to be the leading parameter characterizing marble attitude towards granulardecohesion damage. Of course, the evaluation of such a resistance can only be performed indirectly. Therefore, the principal scope of the experimental activity of this research has been the definition of convenient procedures for such a measurement. Usually, the more sophisticated the tests, the more reliable results can be obtained, but a compromise should be searched between practicability and accuracy. Consequently, various tests, providing a characterization at different levels of accuracy, have been proposed. Direct tensile tests (Iori & Royer, 2001) are effective, but difficult to perform and require a very sophisticated apparatus, although they are the only tests that permit a direct measure of the average resistance of the cohesive forces cementing the grains together. A further indication can be obtained through the evaluation of the fracture energy using bending tests on pre-cracked beams (Belletti at.al., 2000), which allow a good characterization of the various materials: again xenoblastic-texture marble show the greatest value of the fracture energy. Moreover, dilatometric tests (Royer-Carfagni, 2004) clearly represents the attitude of marbles towards granular decohesion. They probably constitute the best solutions when a precise, though not complete, characterization is required. This research has also highlighted that in general compression tests are not suitable for material characterization. In fact, in this case, the trangranular nature of fractures that

accompanies compression failure does not permit any evaluation of the connection among the grains. When only simple experiments are allowed, evaluation of the bending strength, possibly recording the material response during loading, appears to be the most suitable of all standard mechanical tests. Bending tests give a rough indication of the material fracture energy, which should however be controlled thorough more refined tests when more accuracy is required. The research has always showed the fundamental importance of the grain textural arrangement. We emphasize that a control of this parameter through the microscopic observation of material thin sections is unavoidable. In all the tests we have performed, in agreement with the results independently obtained in other laboratories, xenoblastic-textured marbles have nearly always showed better resistance than the homoblastic ones. Last but not least, in order to assess the material attitude towards granular decohesion, it is fundamental in any test to compare the results on virgin specimens with those performed on thermally deteriorated samples. The thermal treatment to be used (i.e., number of thermal cycles and temperature intervals) should be codified. We may summarize in a recapitulary table (Tab.3) a possible technical card for the material classification. Indication of a possible treatment for thermal-conditioning is also reported. 6.3 PRACTICAL COUNTERMEASURES
FOR PREVENTING THE FAILURE
OF THE MARBLE CLADDING
For what the prevention of marble-cladding failure is
concerned, two issues should be distinguished: i) monitoring an existing marble façade, in order to avoid any possible risk; ii) making predictions about the façade “remaining life”. The continuous control of the actual health-state of a façade should not be limited to observation of possible bowing. In fact, recall that the subtlest failure may occur without bowing. In-lab tests have provided a wealth of evidence that granular decohesion can be produced by thermal conditioning without any evident sign of bowing and, as a matter of fact, we have already remarked that warping should be attributed to possible differences in the thermal-hygrometric conditions between the two faces of the cladding. Effective monitoring can of course be performed through destructive testing, i.e., detection of possible decay in the bending strength already furnishes an indicative parameter. However, just a SEM analysis of very little portions carved from the façade should be sufficient to immediately recognize possible signs of granular decohesion. The results obtained in other laboratories, at least so far, advise against the use of non-destructive tests like ultrasonic measurements, which furnish insignificant indications. Other types of non-destructive testing, for example sclerometer measurements, have not been considered in this research. Making predictions is a much more difficult task. In our research, the most appropriate test from which some type of prediction can presumably be drawn appears to be the dilatometric test. Measuring the permanent dilatation produced by thermal cycling may also be an appropriate way to assess the DIAMANTE Applicazioni & Tecnologia

vulnerability of different marble qualities. In particular, we have noticed that, for the same temperature intervals, there is a linear correspondence between the permanent dilatation and the logarithm of the number of thermal cycles. The slope of each graph may thus represent an index of the material attitude towards damage: smaller slopes correspond to more durable materials. The important of this assumed linearity is that only a few tests are necessary to make long term predictions. In other words, knowing the thermal-hygrometric conditions at both sides of a façade and analyzing in-lab the permanent expansion of marble in response to thermal cycling, it should be possible to make an estimation of the progression in time of the granular decohesion level. Unfortunately, this aspect of the research is only at its initial stage and, in particular, the effects of humidity have still to be analyzed in depth. For this reasons, further studies are needed to achieve a better quantitative description of the phenomena.
