Old Dastaguir sets out on a journey to the coal mine where his son Mourad works, to tell him about the bombed village and the slaughter of all but its inhabitants. Dastaguir represents the past of Afghanistan, with its traditions and code of honor. He travels with a kid, his nephew Yacine, who represents the future of a country wasted by the war. Mourad is the present, a generation – which the author himself belongs to – betrayed by politics. Silence and stillness set the pace of the narrative frame, serving to highlight even the slightest emotional fluctuation of the characters. War is not entertainment here. The camera does not focus solely on the burning house, but rather on the faces of those who watch it burn. Due to its simplicity and authenticity,’ Earth and Ashes” can also be seen as an Afghan “road movie”. Its simple form gives a voice to the suffering, solitude and fear of not being heard.

“Most people work hard to make ends meet … some work even harder”. Solinar is unemployed. His wife Heang works as a food vendor to make ends meet, while their son Chai contributes working as a shoe-shine boy after school. Heang consults a psychic, who predicts Solinar will soon get job. Indeed, Solinar has a chance to work as courier, but he must get his own motorcycle. The family sells all they have to buy one. Unfortunately, on his first shift, Solinar’s new bike is stolen …Inspired by Vittorio De Sica’s Ladri di biciclette, K.M.Lo’s aim was to deal with social issues and, at the same time, to encourage young Cambodian filmmakers, showing them that if one wisely and devotedly uses the means at his disposal, substantial funds and expensive equipment are not necessary to carry out a good movie.

Soap Opera is made up of several independent short stories: a mistreated student who kidnaps his neighbor’s child; a middle-aged man who cannot get to sleep because of a noisy neighbor upstairs; a father how is a good cook makes something unexpected... These stories are taken from gossip or newspapers and compiled according to memory. Although they are incredible in some aspects, they can still be held as true representations of human nature. Judgment on value or emotional tendencies can influence the integrity and the chaos of reality. Therefore, the basic attitudes are: no psychological analysis, no moral judgment, no limitation of the cause/effect process. Life is not a story with clear beginning and a clear end. It shows only a progression of scenes that cannot be dissociated from one another.

To move to the Province of Yunnan has been a lifelong dream for Xu Daqin. Xu had had a chance to do so when he was a young man, but a relationship ultimately led to marriage and a decision to stay in Northern China. What follows is a dull routine of working and fighting with his wife. Now and then, Xu thinks of how different his life would have been had he moved. After many vicissitudes, Xu succeeds in reaching Yunnan. Here, he becomes embroiled in a rather complex relationship with a prostitute, that eventually leads to his imprisonment … Xu’s inward distress is the main theme of the movie: the choice of one kind of life necessarily means the loss of another. South of the Clouds is the story of someone’s impossible life.

Hayasaki progetta apparecchiature mediche. Hayasaki develops medical equipment. He’s the company hero, and everyone has high expectations about his groundbreaking artificial human body-chair. Under such a pressure, Hayasaki falls into a terrible slump. One day, while struggling with his new device, he runs into his doppelganger. Meaning ‘double walker’ in German, a doppelganger is a shadow-self that walks by a man’s side. To meet one’s double, many believe, is the premonition of an imminent death. Initially, Hayasaki is terrified and tries to drive the doppelganger away, but it returns again and again insisting it can make Hayasaki’s dreams come true. In time, the two of them cooperate to complete the invention. When finally accomplished, Hayasaki makes a startling choice.

‘In the post 9-11 world’ – director Sharma states – ‘ the politics of intolerance is finding acceptance within the mainstream, nationalism is on the rise and the right-wing seems to be tightening its stranglehold across usa and Europe mainly on the anti-immigrant/anti-Muslim issue’. Part 1, Pride and Genocide, deals with the genocidal violence against Muslims and its immediate aftermath. Part 2, The Hate Mandate, documents the poll campaign during the Assembly elections in Gujarat in 2003. It records in detail the exploitation of the Godhra incident (in which 58 Hindus were burnt alive) by the right-wing propaganda machinery for electoral gains. Following is a study of the situation after the storm and its impact on Hindus and Muslims – segregation, economic boycott and continuing acts of violence more than a year after the carnage.

Roll Call is the first in a series of three films the director dedicated to the issue of quality in elementary education. The idea of a roll call being answered by children who are deprived of education is disturbing. It reminds the audience that there are many children who would like to and should be going to school, but are not. The movie aims at stirring the conscience of the viewer - most often a privileged member of society - who is uninterested in the issue of primary education.

Hawa Kay Naam (For a place under the Heavens) è il viaggio di Sabiha attraverso l’islamizzazione del Pakistan. Hawa Kay Naam (For a place under the Heavens) is Sabiha’s personal journey through the Islamization of Pakistan. From her own perspective, she depicts the transformation of the Pakistani from a vibrant, liberal society into a more conservative, religious-oriented one. What is the true nature of this creeping Islamization? What are the liberal forces doing?

The most stigmatized people in Calcutta’s red light district, are not the prostitutes, but their children. In the face of poverty, abuse, and despair, these kids have little chances to escape their mother’s fate. Directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman chronicle their amazing transformation. Briski gives them photography lessons, kindling the latent fire of artistic genius in these children, who live in the most sordid and seemingly hopeless world. Devoid of sentimentality, Born into Brothels defies the sterotypical tear-stained snapshot of the downtrodden. Briski has spent years with these kids and has become part of their lives. Their photographs are not anthropological curiosities, but rather mirror images of their souls and a true testimony of the power of the indelible creative spirit of man.

Palvan, a great big and wholeheartedly honest fellow, moves to a big city from his native village. He has no ambitions at all and his only purpose is to earn enough money to support his old parents who remained at the village. He then stumbles on Zulfikar, a small man who, although as broke as Palvan, holds himself very crafty and enterprising. In the face of hard times, he fancies all possible ways of making money fast. The two of them team up but all attempts by Zulfikar to provide his partner with a better paid job are frustrated by Palvan’s straightforwardness … Sly Zulfikar and simple-hearted Palvan get along very well though. On the one hand, honesty awakes in Zulfikar under the influence of Palvan; on the other, when ‘big fellow’ feels sad and frustrated, the inexhaustible inventiveness of his partner comes to his aid.

We met in the premier’s private residence, in the presence of her little niece. As usual, I felt free to ask whatever question and, suddenly, I told her: “I have a rather embarrassing question for you. I was told that they will put you in jail first and then they will kill you”. Indira looked very self-confident and whispered: “What is so embarrassing in that? I know they want to use any means necessary to kill me and I am ready”. The feeling of intimacy that quickly grew between the two of us was so strong that, before leaving, I went so far as to caress her.

Shot in different areas of Tibet – some of which never before filmed – and in Dharmsala, India, Impermanence is the journey of Tenzin Gyatso, the fourteenth Dalai Lama and a man who lost his freedom when he was fifteen and had to live as an exile since the age of twenty-four. News from his homeland is always saddening. However, he always seems to be at peace. Speaking of universal responsibility, His Holiness says: “There is no denying that our happiness is inextricably tied to that of others. There is no denying that if society at large suffers we ourselves suffer. We can reject religion, ideology and wisdom. But we cannot escape the necessity of love and compassion”. Impermanence of phenomena is a universal truth. We are all bound to die but the basic question of life is how to overcome suffering between birth and death. Since cinema has the power to “preserve” impermanent facts for posterity, director Ghose has tried to record the Dalai Lama’s experience and wisdom to help mankind understand…

Gandhi was assassinated on January 30th, 1948. The following day, Nehru set the funeral pile on fire. What happened to the Mahatma’s ashes? How to live up to the legacy of a man who, by means of an unprecedented strategy, got the upper hand of British imperialism but, at the same time, was overcome by political and religious intolerance? In Italy, at that time, India and Gandhi did non kindle any special interest, but someone still remembers the day when the news was spread that the ‘half-naked fakir’, as Winston Churchill once called the Mahatma, had been killed. Mario Luzi, Mrinalini Sarabhai, Carlo Della Casa, Rossana Matteschi and some Indian militants of the anti-British movement, recall the time when three gunshots put an end to Gandhi’s life.

SANDCASTLES: BUDDHISM AND GLOBAL FINANCE
La cospicua filmografia di Oey comprende: The Sound of Progress (1988, Rotterdam International Film Festival), The End of Art (1990), World Reformers (1998), Hard Normal Weird (1998, Rotterdam International Film Festival), The End of Ego (2000, Rotterdam International Film Festival), Two philosophers about Zen (2004), The Sound of Contemplation (2004) Born in 1960, Alexander Oey, after a long-running activity in the field of editing, started off as a director with the Dutch national broadcasting company. His early work dealt mainly with arts but, as from the mid nineties, the director’s interest shifted to social issues. According to Oey, art has lost a great deal of its provocative power, an overt contradiction in our time, when the issues of globalization, migration and social gaps are more relevant than ever. His extensive filmography includes: The Sound of Progress (1988, Rotterdam International Film Festival), The End of Art (1990), World Reformers (1998), Hard Normal Weird (1998, Rotterdam International Film Festival), The End of Ego (2000, Rotterdam International Film Festival), Two philosophers about Zen (2004), The Sound of Contemplation (2004)

Son of the Sheikh, Jud Süss, Exodus, True Lies: silent film star Valentino as the noble Bedouin; the “greedy Jew” serving the Nazi cause; Paul Newman as the blue-eyed Jewish freedom-fighter in Palestine; the dark-skinned, hook-nosed Arab terrorist annihilated by Arnold Schwarzenegger … a muddled composite of cinematographic memories! Forget Baghdad is a film reflecting upon the clichés of “the Jew” and “the Arab” in the last hundred years of cinema, combined with the biographies of some extraordinary individuals. Over the past few years, there has been a lively debate in Israel, mainly among intellectual “Mizrahim” (Middle Eastern Jews). Their criticism is directed against the policy of alienation and exploitation of Arab Jews, stemming from the colonial claims asserted by Israelʼs Euro-Americaninfluenced founding generation.

Kang Chung Nam, a Japan-born North Korean, works as a driver for Kim Seil, a former schoolmate who now owns a cab company in Tokyo. Chung Nam’s fellow workers make up an odd team indeed, including a newly employed driver with no sense of direction, a former boxer who claims a bitter aversion to Koreans and an illegal immigrant from Iran. Chung Nam keeps busy running after women. Because of fruitless attempts with Koreans and his mother objecting to Japanese women, Chung Nam ends up courting Connie, a reluctant Filipino girl. Meanwhile, Kim Seil determines to invest a fortune in a golf course. The venture is a failure and Kim Seil is forced to hand his company over to a gangster. At first, Kim Seil determines to burn the building down but, on second thoughts … Director Sai, himself a Japan-born Korean, often deals with the problems faced by foreigners living in Japan but, refraining from diatribe, he rather uses irony to depict the absurdities of contemporary Japan.

Chi c’è dietro i brutali omicidi? The crime stirs the Seventh Squad up but is turns out that the Tenth Squad has been assigned the new case. The rival teams start squabbling and a third murder comes to make things even more complicated. The question remains as to what is the link between the three seemingly unrelated victims. Quill, a pup Labrador retriever, is easily identifiable by a curious pattern on its side that resembles a bird spreading its wings. Its owner wants Quill to be trained as a guide dog. The pet’s life drastically changes when it is taken away from its mother, assigned to “foster parents” and, eventually, enters a training center. The gentle Quill is then teamed up with a man who, at first, is reluctant to take to a guide dog. Then, an incident causes the seemingly incompatible man and dog to come to rely on each other. Quill experiences many encounters and farewells in his daily life as a guide dog and tenderly gives everyone his unconditional love and trust. The bond between Quill and the owner/partner, who rediscovers the joy of life, grows everyday stronger. The two of them though, will soon have to face a sudden and sorrowful parting... “Quill, When I walk with you, I realize what it is to be alive”. Based on a true story.

Kenji Mizoguchi (1898-1956), «the greatest filmmaker in the world», was born in Tokyo, the son of modest artisans. Initially, he took interest in drama; then he switched to filmmaking and joined Nikkatsu Production as an assistant director. In 1923, he directed his first and unfortunately lost movie, inspired by Tolstoj’s Resurrection. The praise of the critics came with Osaka Elegy and Sister of the Gion (1936), two fine examples of social realism on film, written by Yoda Yoshikata who would then become one of Mizoguchi’s steady collaborators. In 1942, Kyoto’s production company Shochiku entrusted him with the direction of The Forty-seven Ronins. The movie, based on a classic of Japanese literature, is still considered one of the director’s masterpieces. Mizoguchi earned his international fame with Life of O-Haru (1952), Tales of Ugetsu (1953) and Legend of Bailiff Sanshô (1954), again centered on the individual as opposed to society at large.

Tokyo, 1956: Yumeko, Yasumi, Hanae, “Mickey” and Yorie earn their living as prostitutes in a club called “Yume no Sato” (which could be approximately rendered as “Home Sweet Home”).Street of Shame narrates their vicissitudes and mishaps just before the ratification of the Anti-Prostitution Act. Kenji Mizoguchi had already portrayed Japanese prostitutes soon after World War II, in Yoru no onnatachi (1948). Street of Shame portrays women who fight for their rights against a male chauvinist society, instead of conveying a feeling of passive awareness of their troubles which, at that time, was common to many Japanese films. It was right after this film had been released that the AntiProstitution Act was finally ratified. Five months later director Mizoguchi passed away.

Was born in Tokyo, in 1923. From 1956 to 1968, he directed thirtynine features for Nikkatsu Studios, mainly action and “yakuza” movies, adapting popular tales with lots of intrigues and daring characters, often with remarkable irony (Nikutai no mon, 1964; Koroshi no rakuin, 1967). Due to bitter disagreements, Branded to Kill (1968) concludes his association with Nikkatsu. A girl’s day begins at 3.00, when school breaks up. While Junko goes to meet her friends, Raku accompanies Maru to the abortion clinic. Later on they go shopping. Raku leaves early to go to a porn shoot. Maru picks up a client who he turns out to be a gangster and wants her to work for him. When Junko goes to negotiate on Maru’s behalf, she’s warned off too; either they do business on account of the yakuza or quit right away. So far, it’s been a pretty ordinary day. Lisa, a girl Raku has met at the shoot, is about to change that. She’s not like anyone Raku has met before: there’s an aura of purity and hope around her that makes her stand out of the number ‘ko gals’ of Shibuya district.
