INTRODUCTION
(to rocks)
Rocks • They are solid aggregates of one or more minerals. • They are divided into three categories: sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. • Apparently rocks are permanent and unchanging over a human lifetime. Over a geologic time, they can move from a category to another, following the process of the Rock Cycle.
Igneous Rocks •It is formed by solidified magma (a molten liquid which can be found below the Earth’s surface). •It can be intrusive or extrusive.
• Extrusive igneous rocks cool quickly and as a result these rocks are fine grained or has lack of crystal growth
• Intrusive igneous rocks are formed from magma that cools slowly and as a result these rocks are coarse grained
Sedimentary Rocks •Igneous rock can be weathered and, as a result, it is broken in smaller pieces which form sediments (gravel,clay, sand…) •Sedimentary rock forms when sediments become cemented and compacted into solid rock.
•This process can happen in seawater too. Shells and hard parts of marine organisms remain accumulated on the sea bottom and create one of the most common sedimentary rocks: limestone.
Metamorphic Rocks •It forms when heat, pressure or hot water alter any preexisting rock.

Beryl Beryl (Be3Al2Si6O18) is a mineral belonging to the group of silicates. This mineral is magmatic intrusive, located in pegmatitic veins and sometimes also found in alluvial sediments, which is why its crystals are very large. The crystal habit has shaped hexagonal prism. Beryl has a specific gravity varies from 2.6 to 2.9; is a hard mineral in fact on the Mohs scale it measures 7.5-8; it has a conchoidal fracture and vitreous luster. The main peculiarity of this mineral is that it is allocromatic: indeed in nature can be found in blue: aquamarine, yellow: heliodor, green: emerald, pink: morganite, red: bixite and transparent: Goshenite. The main places of extraction of beryl are Colombia, Brazil, Russia, Egypt and Austria. From this is derived the mineral beryllium which is a rare and light element, widely used in the missile and aviation industry.
Il berillo (Be3Al2Si6O18) è un minerale appartenente al gruppo dei silicati. Questo minerale è magmatico intrusivo, si trova in filoni pegmatitici e a volte si rinviene anche in sedimenti di tipo alluvionale, per questo motivo i suoi cristalli sono molto grandi. L’ abito cristallino ha forma di prisma esagonale, il berillo ha un peso specifico che varia da 2,6 a 2,9; è un minerale duro infatti sulla scala di Mohs misura 7.5-8; ha una frattura concoide e lucentezza vitrea. La principale particolarità di questo minerale è che è allocromatico, infatti in natura si può trovare in azzurro: acquamarina, giallo: eliodoro, verde: smeraldo, rosa: morganite, rosso: bixite e trasparente: goshenite. I principali luoghi di estrazione del berillo Colombia, Brasile, Russia, Egitto ed Austria. Da questo minerale viene ricavato il berillio che è un elemento raro, leggero, largamente usato nell’ industria aeronautica e missilistica
Opal The Opal is an amorphous form of silica and the Mohs hardness is 5,5-6. The mineral can assume many different colours from red to orange and from green to blue, this optical effect is called crazing effect. Opal is a low temperature mineral and is found in cracks or cavities that are filled in late in their geological life. Water, must be present. It is also found as a replacement after certain skeletons of marine animals or plants.
L’Opale è un silicato di forma amorfa e la durezza è di 5,5-6 nella scala di Mohs.
Il minerale può assumere molti colori differenti dal rosso all’arancione e dal verde al blu, questo effetto ottico è chiamato “arlecchinamento”. L’Opale è un minerale che si trova a basse temperature ed è situato nelle crepe o nelle cavità che sono state riempite tardi nella loro era geologica. L’acqua deve essere presente. È situato anche in sostituzione di alcuni scheletri di animali marini o piante.
Nadorite Nadorite is a mineral which has PbSbO₂Cl as chemical formula. It takes is name from Djebel Nador in Algeria, the place where it was found for the first time in 1870. His crystal sistem is the orthorhombic dypiramidal one and it is a oxychloride. It also belongs to the halide class. Nadorite is characterised by a density of 7,02 g/cm³ and a hardness of 3,70 on the Mohs’ scale. Its colour could changes from brown to yellow, its luster is adamantine-resinous and it is translucent. It has a perfect decolleté and a white-yellow streak. The fracture is indistinct. Its genesis is hydrothermal and it comes from the sostitution of the carbonates. Nadorite has millimetric or centrimetric sizes, it has been synthesize in laboratory and is very appreciated between the collezionists.
La Nadorite è un minerale che ha PbSbO₂Cl come formula chimica. Prende il nome da Djebel Nador in Algeria, il luogo in cui è stata trovata per la prima volta nel 1870. Il suo sistema cristallino è l’orto rombico dipiramidale e è un un ossicloruro. Appartiene anche alla classe degli alogenuri. La Nadorite è caratterizzata da una densità di 7,02 g/cm³ e una durezza di 3,70 sulla scala di Mohs. Il suo colore può variare da marrone a giallo, la sua lucentezza è adamantina-resinosa e è traslucida. Ha una sfaldatura perfetta e uno striscio bianco-giallo. La frattura è indistinta. La sua genesi è idrotermale e deriva dalla sostituzione dei carbonati. La Nadorite ha dimensioni millimetriche o centimetri che, è stata sintetizzata in laboratorio e è molto apprezzata tra i collezionisti.
Pyrite Pyrite is a very common mineral composed of iron disulfide. Pyrite can be found in all rock types but most commonly has a magmatic or sedimentary genesis. Pyrite occurs in cubic crystals and it is often yellow. In the Mohs scale, Pyrite hardness corresponds to grade 6, the cleavage site is absent and the luster is metallic. It is a natural alloy of iron and sulfer, it is presented in large quantities in Piemont and Tuscany. Pyrite is used in steel industry and for the production of sulfuric acid. Curiosity: the name “Pyrite” is derived from the greek “pyros”: fire; because it produces sparks when struck it with metal. Beacause of its golden colour, Pyrite is also known as “Fools’ Gold”.
La pirite è un minerale molto comune composto da disolfuro di ferro. Si può trovare in tutti i tipi di roccia ma più comunemente ha genesi magmatica o sedimentaria. Si presenta in cristalli cubici ed è sempre di colore giallo, per questo è un minerale idiocromatico. Nella scala di Mohs, la durezza della Pirite corrisponde al grado 6, la sfaldatura è assente e la lucentezza è metallica. La Pirite è una lega naturale di zolfo e ferro ed è presente in grandi quantità in Piemonte e in Toscana. Questo minerale viene utilizzato per l’industria siderurgica e per la produzione di acido solforico. Curiosità: il nome Pirite deriva dal termine greco “Pyros” che significa fuoco poiché produce scintille se strofinata con il metallo. A causa del color oro è anche nota come “l’oro degli stolti”.
Aquamarine Aquamarine is a variety of beryl belonging to the class of silicates which owes its name to its color, blue or light-blue, due to the presence of Fe ions. The origin of this rock is igneous intrusive, so is found in veins. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is 7,5-8, so it is considered a hard mineral. Its crystal system is hexagonal and its specific weight is between 2,68 and 2,80. Even if it is quite common, this stone has a high commercial value.
L’acquamarina è una varietà di Berillio appartenente alla classe dei silicati che deve il suo nome alla sua colorazione, azzurra o verdeazzurra, dovuta dalla presenza di ioni di ferro all’interno del minerale. L’origine di questa pietra è magmatica intrusiva, per cui viene rinvenuta in filoni. La sua durezza sulla scala di Mohs è 7,5-8, quindi è considerato un minerale duro. Il suo sistema cristallino è esagonale e il suo peso specifico varia da 2,68 a 2,80. Anche se è relativamente comune, il valore commerciale di questa pietra è alto.
Gypsum The gypsum(its name derives from Latin) is a mineral with the chemical formula CaSO4.2 (H2O) and belongs to the class of sulphates. It is a very soft mineral, its hardness is 2 on the Mohs scale. The structure of its crystal system is monoclinic and has a very low thermal conductivity. its color can be colorless or, depending on the inclusions, white, gray, yellow, brown and bluish. In nature gypsum is a common mineral and is formed as a result of intense evaporation processes in water with high salt concentration. It is able to grow in different types of crystals of considerable size, of which the most common is the desert rose.
Il gesso( dal latino gypsum) è un minerale con formula chimica CaSO4.2(H2O) e appartiene alla classe dei solfati. È un minerale molto tenero, la sua durezza è 2 nella scala di Mohs. La struttura del suo sistema cristallino è monoclina e ha una conduttività termica molto bassa. Si sfalda e si frattura, la sua colorazione può essere incolore o a seconda delle inclusioni bianco, grigio, giallo, bruno e bluastro. In natura il gesso è un minerale comune e si forma a seguito di intensi processi di evaporazione in acque ad alta concentrazione salina. È in grado di accrescersi in diversi tipi di cristalli di notevoli dimensioni, il cui più comune è la rosa del deserto.
Tormaline Tourmaline is a very common mineral that belongs at the mineralogical class of silicates and in particular of borosilicates. Its hardness is between 7 and 7,5 of Mohs' scale and its shine is vitreous and adamantine. The Tourmalines are minerals of magmatic origins widespread in the abyssal rocks rich of silica and are mainly in the pegmatites associated to quartz, feldspar, topaz and beryl. The colour of Tourmalines is various: we can have Tourmalines brown, black, yellowish, rosy, ruby red, greenish blue and blue neon green; we can also found Tourmalines polychrome
La tormalina è un minerale molto comune che appartiene alla classe mineralogica dei silicati e in particolare dei borosilicati. La sua durezza è tra i 7 e 7,5 della scala di Mohs e la sua licentezza è vitrea e adamantina. Le tormaline sono minerali di origine magmatica diffusi nelle rocce abissali ricche di silicio e si trovano principalmente nelle pegmatiti associate a quarzo, feldspato, topazio e berillio. Il colore delle tormaline è vario: possiamo avere tormaline marroni, nere, giallastre, rosee, rosso rubino, blu-verdastro e blu-verde neon; possiamo anche trovare tormaline policrome.
Salgemme The salgemme is a halide monomeric and its crystal system is cubic. The dress of the salgemme is cubic if it has cracks to grow up, or is in granular or massive form. You can submit colorless, gray, rarely reddish or bluish and is vitreous luster or matte. The salgemme is a type of sedimentary evaporite mineral and major salt producers are the United States, Britain, Germany, Siberia, Austria and Poland. Already in prehistoric times the salt trade matter much; was mentioned in many works of Greek and Latin and were dedicated roads. The salgemme is used as a salt, in chemistry, in the preparation of soaps, such as antifreeze and in the field of optics. It is easily recognized thanks to the dress, the cleavage and taste that is typical of salt.
Il salgemme è un alogenuro monometrico e il suo sistema cristallino è cubico. L'abito del salgemme è cubico se ha fessure dove crescere, altrimenti si trova in forma massiccia o granulare. Si può presentare incolore, grigio, raramente rossastro o bluastro ed è di lucentezza vitrea o opaca. Il salgemme è un minerale sedimentario di tipo evaporitico e i principali produttori di sale sono gli Stati Uniti, la Gran Bretagna, la Germania, la Siberia, l'Austria e la Polonia. Già nella preistoria il commercio del sale aveva molta importanza; fu menzionato in molte opere greche e latine e gli furono dedicate anche delle strade. Il salgemme viene usato come sale da cucina, nella chimica, nella preparazione dei saponi, come antigelo e nel campo dell'ottica. Si riconosce facilmente grazie all'abito, alla sfaldatura e al gusto che è quello tipico del
Silver Silver is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Ag (the abbreviation of the Latin Argentum) and atomic number 47. It is a transition metal, very ductile and malleable, just harder than gold with a metallic luster white which is accentuated by polishing. It has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals, even higher than that of copper but has greater diffusion for the lowest cost. It is found in nature is pure form of the mineral. It is used in monetization, in photography and in jewelry.
L'argento è l'elemento chimico nella tavola periodica che ha simbolo Ag (dall'abbreviazione del latino Argentum) e numero atomico 47. È un metallo di transizione molto duttile e malleabile, appena più duro dell'oro con una lucentezza metallica bianca che viene accentuata dalla lucidatura. Ha la maggiore conducibilità elettrica tra tutti metalli, superiore persino a quella del rame che però ha maggiore diffusione per il minor costo. Si trova in natura sia puro che sotto forma di minerale. Si usa nella monetizzazione, in fotografia e in gioielleria.
Quartz Quartz SiO2 belongs to the trigonal crystal system. The ideal crystal shape is a six-sided prism terminating with sixsided pyramids at each end. In nature quartz crystals are often twinned, distorted, or so intergrown with adjacent crystals of quartz or other minerals as to only show part of this shape, or to lack obvious crystal faces altogether and appear massive. Well-formed crystals typically form in a 'bed' that has unconstrained growth into a void; usually the crystals are attached at the other end to a matrix and only one termination pyramid is present. However doubly- terminated crystals do occur where they develop freely without attachment, for instance within gypsum. A quartz geode is such a situation where the void is approximately spherical in shape, lined with a bed of crystals pointing inward Il Quarzo SiO2 appartiene al sistema di cristallo trigonale. La forma di cristallo ideale è un prisma esagonale terminante con piramidi esagonali a ciascuna estremità. In natura i cristalli di quarzo sono spesso gemellati, distorti, o almeno così crescono insieme con cristalli adiacenti di quarzo o di altri minerali, come a mostrare solo una parte di questa forma, o per mancanza evidenti facce cristalline del tutto e sembra massiccia. Cristalli ben formati tipicamente si formano in un 'letto', che ha una crescita non vincolata nel vuoto; di solito i cristalli sono attaccati all'altra estremità ad una matrice e una sola piramide terminazione è presente. Tuttavia doubly- cristalli terminati si verificano dove si sviluppano liberamente senza attaccamento, per esempio all'interno di gesso. Un geode quarzo è una situazione in cui il vuoto è approssimativamente di forma sferica, rivestito con un letto di cristalli punta verso l'interno
Azurite Chemical form: Cu3(Co3OH)2 Azurite is a mineral of carbonates' family. It's crystal habit is composed of elongated crystals and tabular, striated and rich of faces. Many times it is presented in compact or earthy microcrystalline masses. It's crystalline system is monoclinic. Is a mineral originated by the alteration of deposits and sulphides of copper and it is formed in more superficial levels of malachite. It is presented in aggregated forms of weaving. In the Middle Age, Azurite was an important pigment for painting. It represented the blue color but it had the defect of pulverized. In Mhos' scale, it is at level 3-4-5 and it's specific gravity is 3,7-3, 9. In crystals it's color is blue and in earthy's masses it is light blue. Azurite has a vitreous shine and it can be transparent or matt. The cleavage site is distinct along a direction and instead the fracture is conchoidal and brittle
Forma chimica: Cu3(Co3OH)2 L’azzurrite è un minerale della famiglia dei carbonate. Il suo abito cristallino è composto da cristalli allungati e tabulari, striati e ricchi di facce. Molte volte si presenta in masse microcristalline compatte o terrose. Il suo sistema cristallino è monoclino. E’ un minerale originato dall’alterazione di depositi e solfuri di rame e si forma ai livelli più superficiali della malachite. Si presenta in aggregati a tessitura radiata. Nel medioevo l’azzurrite era un importante pigmento per gli affreschi. Rappresentava il colore blu, ma aveva il difetto di polverizzarsi. Nella scala di Mhos si trova al livello 3-4-5 ed il suo peso specifico è di 3, 73, 9. Nei cristalli il suo colore è blu e nelle masse terrose è azzurro. L’azzurrite ha una lucentezza vitrea e può essere trasparente od opaca. La sfaldatura è distinta lungo una direzione, invece la frattura è concoide e fragile.
Obsidian Obsidian is a volcanic glass accidental formation. Is generated as a result of sudden cooling of magmas acids effusive, high content of silica, fluids and poor gas, which vitrify if exposed to low temperatures or by coming into contact with water, more rarely by volcanoes in explosive activity. In prehistoric times, was employed as a raw material for the manufacture of weapons, tools and other artifacts. Today it is used in jewelry, in different varieties polychromatic very valuable and sought after. Main physical Color: dark gray, dark brown or black, often streaked green, yellow and purple, caused by the presence of iron and magnesium. Lustre: vitreous, sometimes opaque. Transparency: translucent. Crystal system: absent. Dress: comes in the form of compact nodules or massive flows of stratified among other types of volcanic rock. Fracture: conchoidal. Hardness: 5.5 grade scale Mhos Specific Gravity: 2.6 on average. Obsidian is found on all continents, in particular along the vulcanos.
L’ossidiana è un vetro vulcanico di formazione accidentale. Si genera a seguito del repentino raffreddamento di magmi acidi effusivi, ad alto contenuto di silici, fluidi e poveri di gas, i quali vetrificano se esposti a basse temperature o entrando in contatto con l’acqua, più raramente da vulcani in attività esplosiva. In epoca preistorica, veniva adoperata come materia prima per la costruzione di armi, arnesi ed altri manufatti. Oggi viene impiegata in gioielleria, nelle diverse varietà policromatiche molto pregiate e ricercate. Principali caratteristiche fisiche Colore: grigio scuro, marrone scuro o nero, spesso presenta striature verdi, gialle e purpuree, causate dalla presenza di ferro e magnesio. Lucentezza: vitrea, talvolta opaca. Trasparenza: traslucida. Sistema cristallino: assente. Abito: si presenta sotto forma di noduli compatti o di massicce colate stratificatesi tra altri tipi di roccia vulcanica. Frattura: concoide. Durezza: grado 5,5 della scala di Mhos; Peso Specifico:in media 2,6. L’ossidiana è reperibile in tutti i continenti, in particolare, nelle zone soggette ad attività vulcaniche.
Jet Jet is a mineraloid of organic origin, quite frail and it is shiny black. It is a product from decaying wood under extreme pressure from millions of years ago, particularly the wood of a family of conifers (Araucariaceae). The jet is found in many places: Spain, France, Germany, USA and Russia, but the better quality of jet is the one found in Whitby. Peculiarity: the adjective “jet-black”, that means as dark as possible, derives from this material. The jet is not a fossil resin but is a minerl similar to coal, but harder (in fact is a variety of lignite). If treated with a particular process it obtains a brightness that could not reduce.
Sistema cristallino: amorfo. Abito cristallino: amorfo. Durezza: 2,5-3 (scala di Mohs). Sfaldatura: assente. Frattura: concoide. Colore: nero. Lucentezza: da picea a vitrea (solo se lucidato). Fluorescenza: assente Il giaietto è un mineraloide di origine vegetale, abbastanza fragile, di colore nero brillante. È un legno fossilizzato derivato da una particolare famiglia di conifere (le Araucarie) presenti da 180 fino a 60 milioni di anni fa. Il giaietto si è originato dalla grande pressione subita dal legno delle Araucarie dopo la loro estinzione. Il luogo di ritrovamento più importante è nello Yorkshire, vicino Whitby, ma esistono depositi anche in Spagna, Francia, Germania, Stati Uniti e Russia. Particolarità: non è una resina fossile ma un minerale simile al carbone, solamente più duro (è infatti una varietà di lignite). Se trattato mediante un sistema di spazzolatura e pulitura acquisisce una brillantezza che non diminuisce nel tempo.
Topaz Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminum and fluorine. It belongs to the group of nesosilicate and crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. Its structure is based on mineralogical isolated tetrahedra: the result is a very compact arrangement so that different minerals have high values of reflectivity, hardness and density. The topaz is formed mainly of plutonic and volcanic rocks of acid type that is rich in silicon and fluorine, and more rarely in metamorphic rocks. It’s an allocromatic mineral and naturally we find the following colours: red, pink, blue, blue-green, pink-orange, yellow-brown, yellow-orange, colorless. The topaz was known to the ancients, who, even used it as a remedy against the plague. The Egyptians believed that it was colored by the sun god Ra, which is why they took that as an amulet; while the Greeks thought might give strength and invisibility.
Il topazio è un minerale silicato d'alluminio e fluoro. Appartiene al gruppo dei nesosilicati e cristallizza nel sistema ortorombico. La sua struttura mineralogica si basa su tetraedri isolati: ne risulta una disposizione molto compatta così che i vari minerali presentano alti valori di rifrangenza, durezza e densità. Il topazio si forma principalmente in rocce plutoniche e vulcaniche di tipo acido ossia ricche in silicio e fluoro, più raramente nelle rocce metamorfiche. E’ un minerale allocromatico e in natura si riscontrano le seguenti colorazioni: rosso, rosa, bluverde, azzurro (naturale), rosa-arancio, giallo-bruno, giallo-arancio, giallo, incolore. Il topazio era noto perfino agli antichi, i quali, lo utilizzavano addirittura come rimedio contro la peste. Gli Egiziani erano convinti che fosse stato colorato dal dio del sole Ra, motivo per cui lo portavano come amuleto, mentre i Greci pensavano donasse forza ed invisibilità
Agate Mineral oxides class, the quartz group.. Chemical formula: SiO2 + Al, Ca, Fe, Mn. Agate is a compact and fibrous variety of translucent quartz, with a typical structure zoned and evident also with the naked eye for the diversity of colour ,thickness and transparency of the zone; the white areas are completely opaque. Agate with a strong detachment of colors takes the name of onice. Agate is created in hydrothermal environment, so inside of volcanic rocks that are poor of silicic acid. Into the cavities which are formed during the cooling of magma for the presence of air bubbles, are collected solutions of that acid that will form deposits of small crystals in layers along the walls. This accretion process determines in this mineral its characteristic of striped coloring with concentric or parallel horizontal zones, where can contribute inclusions of various exemplary of the quartz group ( rock crystal, amethyst), some members of the family of chalcedony (chalcedony, carnelian, onyx) and of jasper, forming patches or drawings of concentric bands with shades that could be gray, blue, red and yellow. If the crystals fill the cavity we talk about Agate's “almond”, but if the cavity isn't completely full the mineral takes the name of “geode”. Classe minerale: ossidi, gruppo dei quarzi.. Formula chimica: SiO2 + Al, Ca, Fe, Mn. L’agata è una varietà compatta e fibrosa di quarzo translucido, con tipica struttura zonata e visibile anche a occhio nudo per la diversità di colore, spessore e trasparenza delle zone; le zone bianche sono interamente opache. L'agata con forte distacco di tinte prende il nome di onice. L'agata si forma in ambiente idrotermale, quindi in rocce vulcaniche povere di acido silicico. Nelle cavità che si formano nel corso di raffreddamento del magma a causa della presenza di bolle d'aria si raccolgono soluzioni di tale acido che poi formano depositi di piccoli cristalli a strati lungo le pareti. Tale processo di accrescimento determina nell'agata la sua caratteristica coloritura a strisce a zonatura concentrica o a zone orizzontali parallele, alla quale possono contribuire inclusioni di diversi esemplari del gruppo dei quarzi (cristallo di rocca, ametista), di alcuni membri della famiglia del calcedonio (calcedonio, corniola, ametista), e di diaspro, formando chiazze o disegni di bande concentriche con sfumature che vanno dal grigio blu al rosso e al giallo. Nel caso i cristalli riempiano completamente la cavità si parlerà di “mandorla” d'agata, se invece rimane in parte vuota allora si tratta di un “geode”.
Corals Corals are animals that live alone or in colonies; they can stand under the rocks or they can rise like trees.nThey can also live over 5 000 metres of depht. Coral's structure is quite simple: it's body, the “octopus”, has a soft tissue with the base held up by a skeleton. The exterior skeleton, called "corallum", is made of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and it give protection to the coral. Some unicellular algae, called “zooxantelle”, contributes to the mineralization of the animal. This mineral belongs to the class of organogenic minerals. It has a rhombohedral reticular system. Coral’s colours are multiple: in fact they can be red, pink, orange, white, grey and black.
I coralli sono animali che vivono da soli o in colonie; possono ergersi sotto le rocce o crescere come piante. Essi possono inoltre vivere oltre 5 000 metri di profondità. La struttura dei coralli è molto semplice: il loro corpo, l’”octopus”, presenta un soffice tessuto con la base attaccata ad uno scheletro. Lo scheletro esterno, chiamato “corallum”, è costituito da carbonato di calcio e dà protezione al corallo. Alcune alghe unicellulari, chiamate “zooxantelle”, contribuiscono alla mineralizzazione dell’animale. Questo minerale appartiene alla classe dei minerali organogeni. The Earth's Inside The Earth is composed of a thin crust, a thick mantle and a core. These three layers are distinguished by different chemical composition; the mantle and the core change also for physical properties. Nowadays scientists realized several things about Earth's structure even if the deepest well is only a 12-kilometer-deep in northern Russia. In particular they deduce the composition and the properties of Earth's interior studying the behavior of seismic waves, especially P and S waves. In fact, studying the different velocity of these waves, the nature of the material that they travel through, their refraction or reflection and at last the compression or “shear” that they make in the rocks during their passage, the scientists (and in particular in 1909, Andrija Mohorovicic) identified the boundary between the crust and the mantle. This boundary is today called the Moho discontinuity, in honor of its discoverer. The Moho lies separates the crust from the mantle and we can found it at the average depth of 30 kilometers. The mantle composes about 80 percent of Heart's volume and is almost 2900 kilometers thick; almost all informations that we have about mantle came from the studies of seismic waves.
La Terra è composta da una crosta sottile, da uno spesso mantello e da un nucleo. Questi tre strati sono distinguibili grazie alla differente composizione chimica; il mantello e il nucleo però cambiano anche a causa di differenti proprietà fisiche. Oggigiorno gli scienziati hanno capito diverse cose circa la struttura della Terra anche se i più profondi pozzi nel nord della Russia sono lunghi solo 12 chilometri. In particolare hanno dedotto la composizione e le proprietà dell'interno della Terra studiando il comportamento delle onde sismiche, più precisamente delle onde P e S. Infatti, studiando la differente velocità di queste onde, la natura dei materiali che attraversano, la loro rifrazione o riflessione e infine la compressione o il “taglio” che provocano nelle rocce durante il loro passaggio, gli scienziati (e in particolare nel 1909, Andrija Mohorovicic) hanno identificato il confine tra la crosta e il mantello. Questo confine è oggi chiamato discontinuità di Moho, in onore del suo scopritore. La linea di Moho separa la crosta dal mantello e possiamo trovarla alla profondità media di 30 chilometri. Dangerous rocks and minerals Most rocks and minerals in their natural states are harmless to humans and other organisms. Even if some rocks, such as asbestos, can be dangerous and harmful. In nature, most hazardous rocks and minerals are buried beneath the surface. Natural weathering and erosion expose them so slowly that they do little harm to plants and animals. Most minerals that contain toxic metals, lead, mercury or arsenic, weather so slowly that they release the toxic material in low concentrations. However, if pollution controls are inadequate, mining and smelting can release hazardous materials at greatly accelerate rates, poisoning humans and other organisms. Most common minerals such as feldspar and quartz are harmless in their natural states in solid rocks. However if these minerals are ground to dust, they can enter the lungs and cause a serious inflammation called silicosis.

Radioactivity is the process by which a nucleus of an instable atom loses its energy by emitting ionizing radiations. In natura si possono trovare atomi radioattivi nell’atmosfera, nell’idrosfera e nella litosfera: in quest’ultima la radioattività è dovuta alla presenza di isotopi radioattivi nei minerali. Gli elementi radioattivi più diffusi nei minerali sono torio (Th), uranio (U) e potassio (K).
In nature, radioactive atoms can be found in atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. In lithosphere radioactivity is due to the presence of radioactive isotopes in minerals. The most widespread radioactive elements in minerals are thorium (Th), uranium (U) and potassium (K). Uranio e Torio subiscono nel corso del tempo un processo di decadimento, durante il quale emettono radiazioni, trasmutando in piombo (Pb). I minerali contenenti uranio e torio non sono eccessivamente nocivi per la salute umana in quanto la loro diffusione nella litosfera è molto bassa e l’emissione di radiazioni molto lenta. L’unico rischio può essere rappresentato dalla dispersione in ambiente di un gas radioattivo, il radon, prodotto intermedio del processo di decadimento.
Uranium and thorium undergo a gradual process of decay, during which they emit radiations, transmuting into lead (Pb). Minerals containing uranium and thorium are not excessively dangerous for our health because their concentration in lithosphere is very low and the emission of radiations is very slow. The only risk can be posed by the dispersion in the environment of a radioactive gas, radon, an intermediate product of the process of decay. Per quanto riguarda il potassio, esso è molto diffuso nei minerali rispetto a torio e uranio, ma, solo uno dei suoi isotopi, definito K-40, rappresenta un potenziale rischio per la salute umana, essendo molto radioattivo. Oil extraction and refining Oil, or petroleum, is a complex mixture of solid, liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons like alkanes, cycloalkanes and arenes. Oil forms through a long process involving the decomposition of biological materials, like rests of plants and animals, that settle to lake, sea, and ocean bottoms. The factors involved in the formation of oil are: an anaerobic environment (either in the sea or in a salty lake) where anaerobic bacteria can degrade the materials; enzymes can start the deamination of peptides and the decarboxylation of fatty acids. After long periods of time, between 1 million and 600 million years, at high temperatures and pressure, oil is formed. Oil forms in sedimentary rocks and then migrates to reservoirs: a layer between two layers of impermeable rocks where it is trapped together with water and gases.

Once crude oil has been extracted it is refined and fractioned into components with different density levels: this process is divided in 4 phases: fractional distillation, carried out in distillation columns where components condense at different levels depending on their boiling temperature. These components are gasses, petrols, kerosene, diesel,oils and residuals; the craking, process that turns diesel and kerosene into lighter elements; the catalytic reforming process, introduced in 1949, improves petrol quality as it increases its antiknock properties; the hydrodesulphorisation process which allows to recover sulphur in oil and improves petrol quality, since it prevents the formation of parts of the polluting compounds during combustion.
Dopo essere stato estratto, il petrolio grezzo viene refinito e frazionato in componenti con diversi livelli di densità. Questo processo avviene in 4 fasi:
La distillazione frazionata,si svolge in colonne di distillazione in cui i componenti condensano a livelli differenti in base alla loro temperatura di ebollizione. Questi componenti sono gas, benzina, kerosene, diesel, oli e residui.
Il cracking, processo che trasforma il diesel ed il kerosene in elementi con peso atomico inferiore;
Il processo catalitico di riformazione, introdotto nel 1949, migliora la qualità della benzina aumentando le sue proprietà antidetonanti; La idro-desulfurizzazione processo che permette di recuperare zolfo dagli oli e migliora la qualità della benzina in quanto elimina parte dei composti inquinanti che si formerebbero durante la combustione.

Crystallization Crystallization is the (natural or artificial) process of formation of solid crystals precipitating from a solution, melt or more rarely deposited directly from a gas. Crystallization is also a chemical solid–liquid separation technique, in which mass transfer of a solute from the liquid solution to a pure solid crystalline phase occurs. In chemical engineering crystallization occurs in a crystallizer. Crystallization is therefore an aspect of precipitation, obtained through a variation of the solubility conditions of the solute in the solvent, as compared to precipitation due to chemical reaction.

- 50 ml of distilled water - 18 gr of sea salt
graduated cylinder becker funnel filter paper crystallizer
(The crystallization happens when the solution is SUPERSATURATED= it holds too much salt).
Experimental procedures: - Put the distilled water and the sea salt together, using the graduated cylinder. - Pour the solution inside the becker.
- Put the becker on a plate at high temperature and mix. ( remember: at high temperatures: -all chimical reactions go faster -salt solubility is higher) - Pour hot water in the funnel, to warm it. - Filter the solution with the funnel and the filter paper, and with the crystallizer below. -
The crystallization is ended and visible under a microscope.
