Famosissimo, ad esempio, un graffiti di Banksy che rappresenta un soldato armato fino ai denti messo al muro e perquisito da una bambinetta o i numerosi e divertenti “rats”: topi e pantegani in forma di collages, murales o stencil che dai muri delle strade di Bristol, di Londra e di capitali di tutto il mondo irridono ai tic, alla stupidità e alle debolezze umane. hese summer months have provided the stage for some extremely important artistic events in Italy and in Europe (for example the 54th Venice Biennale, perhaps the most prestigious international show in the world, and the 42nd edition of Art Basel, in Switzerland, one of the most important fairs of modern and contemporary art). These provide settings in which artists who are already established are grateful to be represented while other less well known ones yearn to arrive. They are also occasions of great visibility to which the markets look with an attentive eye, a Mecca for the media for the discovery and promotion of works and events at world level. And yet in the very crowded universe of art, in which it is always difficult to emerge from the throng with an original and individual voice, there are also creative personalities who simply do not seek fame at all. It would not seem possible to believe in the existence of artists who, unlike most of their colleagues, are eager to maintain strict personal anonymity, and yet... This is the case, for example, with “guerrilla artists” including their European trailblazer, Banksy, whose work is well known to us but whose identity remains partly protected (it is known that he was born in 1974 and grew up in Bristol, England). He is a figure who is able to get into museums and, incognito, hang his own paintings, often humorous reinterpretations of canvasses on show in the “profaned” museum itself. A phenomenon rather than an artistic movement, guerrilla art came into being in the United States, in New York and Los Angeles in the Eighties and is similar to the expressions of “street art”; both offshoots of the graffiti art of the seventies (Jean-Michel Basquiat, for example, or Keith Haring). Among the peculiarities of this type of art is precisely this anonymity of the authors who oblige themselves to display their paintings without revealing themselves. Born in the street and for the street, guerrilla art integrates with the environment in which it operates and indeed the surface of the painting – always a public space – ends up as an integral part of its meaning. In short, the images and/or the writing weave an aggressive but symbiotic relationship with their “supports”. A sort of post-graffiti art which soon acquired followers all over the world, it differs from other forms of artistic expressions in that it does not place a barrier between the image and the environment in which it is placed, and possesses an energy powerfully addressed towards reconverting the very concept of public space. The works, so intensely “environmentalized”, cannot be moved from the place in which they are created. It is therefore impossible to transport them into an art gallery or museum, sell them or buy them. An end onto itself and in continuous flux (anyone can continue to add pictorial elements which are often soon deleted by the town cleaning services), guerrilla art with its biting humour aims to provoke a reaction from the general public transiting along the road. Very famous, for example, is a graffiti piece that represents a soldier armed to the teeth on a wall being frisked by a little girl, or the countless and amusing rats: sewer rats and mice in the form of collages, murals or stencils mock our human tics, stupidities and weaknesses from the walls on the streets of Bristol, London and capital cities all over the world. Antonio Ievolella Scultore di memorie by Stella Ferrara
A
ntonio Ievolella è l’antitesi dell’immagine retorica dell’artista tormentato.

Antonio Ievolella

Antonio Ievolella Sculptor of Memories by Stella Ferrara
A
ntonio Ievolella is the antithesis of the rhetorical image of the tormented artist. On the contrary, he is an open person, spontaneous and positive, who possesses and communicates an internal vital power and an uncontainable enthusiasm for his work which he lives with passion. Such is the creative energy within him that he needs increasingly grander spaces for expressing himself. Ievolella thinks on a broad scale, even tackling huge works with full confidence in the outcome. His sculptures dialogue with space, developing it and giving it a sense. So that Ievolella intervenes where before there was emptiness: as if it were a white sheet, giving physicality to his ideas. Hence the place is no longer the same but is “signed” by an artist who transforms, enriches and stirs us with his intervention. Among all the materials used, the artist seems to prefer corten steel, chosen because: “I love it above all because it does not need to be treated and so remains the way it is, and then it is an ‘immediate’ material. If I have to make something, I cut it, I weld it and I put it together very quickly. I do not like to wait; it is not in my nature.” Perhaps it is for this reason that his sculptures sometimes have something unfinished about them, and it is a conscious ‘unfinished’ which leaves space for the observer of the work to come forward and complete it in their own way. He adds: “The choice of this material is also due to the fact that as it ages it charges itself with ‘oldness’. I work a lot on memory: recollections, sensations, the stories of the elderly ... all this triggers in me an interest in and attention to the past to which I give a value, not so much as a memory to hold on to but as the basis for a future path.” Ievolella has come a long way since he left Benevento where he was born in 1962 and where he attended the Liceo Artistico. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, he taught in Milan and then in Padua where he has lived and worked since 1976. During these years he has created coun-
tless works and obtained considerable recognition beginning with the 1988 Venice Biennale which also led to his fame abroad where many of his works can now be found. Important was the 1997 exhibition in Padua, the city where he lives and loves, and is loved in turn, as it gave him confidence and offered him an opportunity to create and exhibit many of works. A unique occasion in 2006 was the Naples exhibition in Castel dell’Ovo, a large space surrounded by the sky and sea, which sparked off the artist’s creativity and released memories associated with the place he knows well, his native land. The result? Franco Biscossa describes it with a beautiful image: “Offering Castel dell’Ovo to Ievolella was opening the doors to the wind.” Ievolella is attracted by large spaces and so one of his greatest satisfactions was the creation of a grandiose work in the Padua neighbourhood in 2003. When it had to extend the Rio cemetery area, the council of Ponte San Nicolò (thanks to an ‘enlightened’ administration) commissioned a group of innovative architects and Ievolella, ensuring a result with an international resonance: The sleeper’s guardians. In harmony with the XQuarda architects who made this a place with a powerful identity with this ‘Public Artwork’, Ievolella makes the square in front of the cemetery (usually an anonymous space) into a real artwork with an absolutely original character. He ‘furnishes’ a wall measuring forty metres by six with corten steel, where panels and niches enclose ordered rows of light amphorae along with symbolic elements that recall signs left by mankind over the course of history. Arranged in the surrounding space, six ‘guardians’ over eight metres tall tower against the sky and, with their silent and solemn presence, evoke profound sacredness. Armed with shields and spears, these giants made of corroded, rusted material, which have nothing of the human body but if anything recall barbarian totems, inspire a sense of respect for the place, but also one of continuity between past civilizations and the present one. This is a feature of the sculptor’s works. “I like sopra | upper

to succeed in being able to make it impossible to establish a time, as the time of memory is not just the historical time in which it is set. I wanted to create a dimension that does not exist, which must not have its own belonging.” And this is the reason why it belongs to everyone in a certain way. In effect, the time dimension acquires a meaning that is almost tangible in this evocative place, as it condensates itself here. Archaic memories of far off yet familiar places re-evoke emotions and nostalgia to the point that you almost do not know where you are and what time you are living in...

WILLY VERGINER
LE DIFFERENZE CROMATICHE DELLA SCULTURA
di Valentina Sperotto
W

WILLY VERGINER
THE CHROMATIC DIFFERENCES OF SCULPTURE by Valentina Sperotto
W
illy Verginer (born in Bressanone in 1957 and living and working today in Ortisei) uses pear, lime and fir wood for his sculptures and renders his subjects realistically down to the smallest details of the body and clothing. And yet Verginer, whose training is linked to the wooden sculpture of Val Gardena and who developed in the eighties when he frequented the environments of the Munich Academy, goes a step further: he does not limit himself to portraying a woman, children or an alpinist on a peak. A key element of his sculpture is the relationship between the masterfully modelled form of the bodies, grasped, as we have said, in their realistic appearance, and the choice of colour. Even before the details added to the figure or placed alongside it, there is an obvious dissonant relationship between the form modelled in the recognizable, and therefore reassuring, wood, and the lively anti-naturalistic and disorienting colour (red, fuchsia, emerald and sky blue), almost, as we have said, a reference to pop art. Blue alongside gold in the “In hoc signo” sculpture creates a precious contrast which exalts even more, thanks to the floral element placed in the hands of the woman who stretches out her arms, showing the live and protective power of the gesture which moves away without violence. She protects herself, protects the child whose head is the same colour as the flowers, fragile even if they are a fruit in power. The same can be said of the youth’s secure gesture, with his hand brought to his chest, and the unyielding expression which in reality is a way of protecting himself: the hand interposes itself between the outside world and his heart, between the other and the carpet of gilded whorls on his chest. All Willy Verginer’s sculptures have this remote expression and their gestural expressiveness is suspended in a sort of calm that recalls classical antiquity. However we must not allow ourselves to be misled: Verginer does not depict divinity, heroes or antiquity, but the human being without that aura of the divine or of fame, and as a result the sense of this quiet distance must be sought elsewhere. With the sculptures that make up “Cecità voluta” (“Deliberate blindness”) the Alto Adige artist recalls that the comparison with the other depends on our ability to see it, to know how to consider it such, without caging it into our own categories and without negating it as being different from us: sunglasses and everything that we put between us and the world (and therefore also closed eyelids, hands covering our gaze or the simplest gesture of turning away) remind us, along with the violence of orange alongside white – a dazzle of colour – of the difficulty of grasping not only the other (woman or man, child or old person who are close to us), but the world itself. In this case the gazes

are remote as they fear the world. Furthermore the immobility and calm of the subjects in the “Vis-à-vis” series, far from being Olympian, are actually the symbol of the slow and enduring difficulty of the subjects to look at themselves. In the coloured box facing him (probably a symbol of the mirror), the subject always and only grasps a part of himself, the same part that is delimited by colour in his figure. Even the vision of the mature man, who has a complete knowledge of himself, is deceptive: colour fills the box, but he does not see himself entirely. The mirror only reflects a part of him and he is not even aware of this; this can only be understood by noting that the orange box actually corresponds exclusively to his shoulder and left-hand arm. There are no ecstatic gazes aimed at the infinite, no seraphic figures as might appear to be the case at first sight. Willy Verginer’s sculptures fix the spectator and force them into a state of disquiet. The complexity of the relationship also emerges when the sculptor deals with the relationship with nature (whether this means the animals of “Disequilibri” (“Disequilibria”) or the alpine rocks of “Bergluft”); the silence of the sculptures and their immobility provide a means of highlighting the difficulty of the equilibrium between elements – because there is always the extraneousness between me and the other, between me and everything that I am not. We are also reminded of this by the alpinists who seem to be the subjects who are most integrated with nature who are the same colour as the rock ... but there is always at least one part with a different colour in contract with it; an extraneous element compared with the rock wall and the mountain peak; it is thought, with the development of its distinctions, that creates the first and fundamental difference.

Lavori di minimale complessità. Ivan De Menis

n the nineteen thirties, Focillon focussed attention – with regard to the work of art, identified as matter and spirit, form and content – on the artistic forms and their psychological and material reflexes; he also looked on the artist as the technician of a specific, concrete and functional language. I believe that the works of Ivan De Menis embrace this concept, drawing a line between the art of today and that of almost one hundred years ago, spanning the entire XX century. The Treviso artist’s works are square panels: the square is a regular geometrical form which often appears in the works of De Menis and which links his various works together across time, ending up by constructing a single great work by means of a series of cross-references. These tesserae composed chess boards, geometrical games which confront each other in the contrast put in place by the artist: the search for the extreme oppositional dichotomy leads to the experimentation of the artistic large/small, gloss/matt antipodes. Again quoting Focillon, the life of the material, being structure and action, has its own destiny or, if you like, a certain formal vocation. Art’s material is transformation and novelty because art is continuous metamorphosis. The work of art, as matter, must conciliate its existence with space-time factors which determine its real updating. The choice of materials is interesting and original: bubblewrap, a packaging material, and the scratched acrylic used for describing the crumbling masonry walls provide one example to the artist’s experimentation. But it is perhaps in epoxy resin that De Menis finds his ideal expressive medium: generically defined as an organic material of natural or synthetic origin, resin is a substance which occurs in two states, liquid and solid, depending on whether it is hot or cold. Corresponding to these physical states are two emotional states of the artist, the free flow of ideas and their concrete realization, and the observer’s two sentiments, 16

inverse with regard to those of the artist, which start from the awareness of the immobile which nevertheless reveal speed and movement. Resin is a material that describes movement, crystallizes the moment and, for this reason must confront itself with time. The materials used perfectly reflect the artist’s desire to protect the work, to fix it in time and conserve it, protecting it for eternity. It is the material, therefore, that marks times, that suspends it and freezes it but provides a glimpse of the story that led to this freezing. The genesis of the work is revealed by the percolations of colour at the edges which describe the passages and therefore see the initial preparation. And it is here that we realize how the draft is no less important than the finished work, as it is an integral part of it. Starting from the experimentation of the idea, a rule that creates the canon is gradually codified. The works of Ivan De Menis are pure and simple forms inserted into contemporary aesthetics but are mindful signs of assimilated pasts, or techniques learnt, of study and of values, of matter and of spirit. The panels with their vivid or neutral colours, glossy or matt, are intended to show themselves for what they are, complex works that hide from the fatigue of the time passed and manifest themselves as searches into the essential aiming for the pure. These works are symbols of the contemporary world: Crono spurs us to speed and the idea of immobility frightens contemporary man as it is interpreted as stopping, entropy, termination. Ivan De Menis, on the other hand, investigates fixity by showing that it is only the result, sought out and intended, of rapid and metamorphic research which narrates the genesis of the idea along a deliberate evolutionary path towards an objective. The desire to be minimal despite the complexity of stratified and complex reasoning is perhaps the Treviso artist’s way of expressing a personal need: artist and work are intimately linked to the need to communicate something interior, something personal, revealing all the stages of the intermediate journey, of the path towards the destination, without and reservation.

Poetic weapons: Armando Gaviglia’s tirasassi by Alessandra Menegotto
I
remember my first contact with slings as a child; they gave me a sense of male power and female danger which was mixed with the rebukes and fears of my parents – I thought of them as ritual objects associated with gangs. The most famous example of the ancient idea of a tool capable of giving stones a boost so that they would have the force to kill can probably be found in the story of David, the biblical hero, the boy who killed the terrible giant, Goliath, with a stone. But Roman soldiers armed with catapults can also be found on Trajan’s Column. The fork, which connotes the catapult we know, and which Armando Gaviglia interprets with potentially infinite variants (there are almost two hundred so far), only originated after the middle of the nineteenth century with the invention of the vulcanization of rubber. This chemical process confers suitable elasticity on the raw material for perfecting a weapon, the ancient sling, so simple that every child can make one, and yet incredibly powerful and potentially lethal. Nevertheless, every threatening aspect disappears in the collection of slings created by Gaviglia and makes way for an incredible variation on the theme that sometimes assumes poetical and lyrical connotations. At other times, the slings are anthropomorphic or inspired by the animal world, and then there are ones that are absolutely abstract and decorative, inspired by the traditions of peoples and cultures with which he has come into contact during his travels. The first stone-slingshot or tirasassi was created

in Vicenza, when Armando as a child, strolling in the Berici Hills with his family, picked up the first suitable piece of wood for a good sling. That was in 1954-55. Worked and smoothed with loving and patient care, the fork became a precious and functional object “with rounded tips so that it could be worm around the neck without the risk of injury ...”. Those that followed gradually lost their useful and functional nature and, instead, activated that playful and evocative character of life’s places and moments: every sling is linked to a place and date. Furthermore, as they are always produced from a wooden fork, they can become what they are during their creation only on the basis of the quality and grain of the wood which “suggests” in a way how the sling must be carved. As a result, the collection becomes a sort of intimate diary, dialoguing with the constant – the raw material, wood and its living nature – and with the variant of the places and their evocative power. Born in Verona, Armando Gaviglia passed his infancy in Vicenza. He defines himself as a “creative”, he works in the world of communications and, in Barcelona, where he has now lived for over twenty years, he founded a communications, creation and design agency which is inspired by the principle of responsible creative thought. But what is a “creative”? If creativity is the capacity to conjure up significant innovations starting from predetermined rules and in virtue of those same rules, the ability to discover new strategies for adapting to the environment, a creator is above all a person who cannot do without an organized system of rules to which to refer constantly. Every human activity and, above all the game that trains us for life, is related to a narrow set of useful instructions for carrying it out, and to the creative mind’s ability to change the rules while using them so that they correspond with the practical or expressive needs of the moment. 22
I like to think of Gaviglia’s tirasassi as a sort of creative “training”. The sensitivity deployed in these little objects goes hand in hand with the minimum constraint of the strategies used for their creation and with their continuous variation. It is therefore the case of a small but precious tactic for adapting to the world, aimed at keeping alive that creativity without which the very survival of homo sapiens is in peril, the survival of the sole species capable of that boundless experimentation which distinguishes humankind and its exponential technological evolution. It is precisely the absolute simplicity of the object, its anthropological character linked to actions of survival (kill to eat) which has evolved until it becomes pure play, experimentation without an end, that makes this collection created by Gaviglia an indivisible set of poetic objects. As Emilio Garroni writes in his essay dedicated to creativity: “man recognizes himself as such ... precisely in liberating himself from the harrying of immediate ends: the immediate end, which is not just specific to man [editor’s note, but also of other living species], is replaced by the mediated end and, at the same time the absence of end. What is defined as art today springs from this base ...”. Creativity not enslaved by the laws of the market, but an obligatory active and sensitive reflection on the significance of our action in the world: this, therefore, is what we call “art”.

prefer images of the real type, with poetic-subjective accentuations” (Giorgio Barucco, “Dentro la mostra” Collective, 1984). Giorgio Barucco was born on 24 September 1910 in Pinerolo, a town in the Turin province, from a family of Veneto origin at Agordo and Belluno. After completing his education he started working at the “Società del Cellina” electricity company. Right from his youth he expressed his passion as a self-taught painter in the work “Due Figure con Chitarra” and various landscapes depicting “La Val Beluna”. Aged just twenty, he wrote “Sette Liriche”, a series of poetic compositions dedicated to his beloved Maria, printed in Belluno in1932. His work took Barucco to live in Venice for a while and then, in 1939, to Libya. He never abandoned his dedication to painting in Libya as can be seen from photos of exhibitions and newspaper articles. His friendship with the master goldsmith, Guido Angelini, was very strong and was crowned by the art exhibition held in the capital in 1958. The Libyan landscapes, characterized by the presence of architectural structures with a powerful symbolic value such as tuna nets, aircraft and the Jewish cemetery, return often in his works where nostalgia for the atmospheres of those far off places prevails. He was an eclectic artist, engaged in painting, graphics, writing and theatre. His refined graphic designs, mainly posters advertising local cultural events, help us with their references to the places and times to reconstruct the stages of his life. The plates were printed using a press that the artist himself had built by combining four I-beams with the jack on the old Fiat Millecento. In 1957, after definitively returning to Italy, Barucco dedicated himself to studying the landscape of the Euganei Hills, Monselice, Liguria and the Venetian lagoon. His preferred techniques were charcoal and sanguine drawing, as well as black and white monotype. He renders the landscape as a broad deep space in which the presence of the sky dominates; the land appears to be interwoven with compositional geometries on a large scale in which industrial structures, roads, canals and bridges are set. His passion for art and painting were fully recognized thanks to the group of San Donà painters known as “Gruppo ‘70”, of which

he was an active member. In 1973, indeed, the group’s small but prestigious Galleria hosted a one-man show and later exhibited his work permanently as part of the group’s collectives. In “Pittura e Forme nel ‘900”, Paola Martini affirms that Barucco’s painting was extremely varied in terms of subjects and material. “With tempera and oils on canvas and on panels, with watercolour and with engraving on wood he depicted landscapes, still lives, often with landscapes in the background, and figures.” The inanimate works depicted in the foreground of his still lives are simple objects which allude to the everyday aspects of lands around the Venetian lagoon. Often appearing behind them are architectural and spatial references that open the gaze to the vastness of the far-off landscape. His preferred objects are glass bottles and vases, jugs, coffee grinders and bowls resting on substantial draperies, as well as chopping boards, knives, lemons and fish. The line of the horizon prevails in the background with the sand and the sea, the Venetian lagoon and industrial buildings. The fusion between academism and reality in these works then opens the way towards the metaphysical and surreal character of his last paintings. In a critical article on the Summer ‘73 Collective at the “Gruppo 70” Gallery in San Donà di Piave Prof. Valentino Crivellato writes: “Barucco introduces a rather original component, roughly definable as magic realism, into the Group’s pictorial panorama. Geometrical and allusive compositions, immersed in a motionless and timeless air, absorbed and somewhat mysterious: reverberating (...), in a figurative world of terse and blocked colourings, astonished and fabulous, recalling certain aspects of Buzzati.” sopra | upper

MUTATIONS by Gillo Dorfles

ho knows what arcane, imperceptible notes, inaudible to human ears, ring out from the large “Harps” exhibited by Gabriella Benedini? Perhaps they are not sounds but ultrasounds, emanated not by material forms (though made of wood, metal or canvas) but immaterial ones, conjured up and mysteriously created by the artist from assemblages of materials found, manipulated and bent to her recondite ends; or maybe aroused in her mind by the materials themselves. Here in fact lies one of the essential features of these works, a point reached at the end of a long and tortuous trail: that of springing almost always from the encounter between an idea and an object. And as in many earlier works, like the series of “Books”, “Theatres” and “Gates to the sky”, this chance encounter is developed until a (unique) combination is attained and transformed into the matrix of an “incarnated” image. There were already significant signs of such a development in the work, rightly defined by Benedini as “alchemical” (and documented in the section under that name at the Venice Biennale); reflecting perhaps the structuring of a magnum opus and transmutation, through albedo and nigredo..., of an inert material into a living one endowed with superhuman powers. And the series ofTheatres is already important in this respect. For in her chemical theatre, theatre of transmutations and theatre of Saturn, this conflux of magic elements brings together the subtlest textural nuances, impalpable marblings of colour and unexpected concretions. Nor should it come as any surprise that underlying these more mature researches - and those of the “Books”, “Gates to the sky”, etc. can be remembered an early, decidedly “figurative” phase in the development of her art, and that of a prevalently informal season. On the contrary, precisely this long alternation of abstract and figurative tendencies behind her explains, I believe, how even the most detailed, seemingly only “objectized” works always convey a message that might be described as “narrative”, the extended decantation of an idea. Leaving aside, however, the physical and metaphysical path pursued by Benedini over the past fifteen years or so - if I dwell only on the latest works on view here it is because I feel that only in these has she reached not only a happy mixture of diverse materials (where shades of chromatic brightness and graphically incised papers, wrinkled wood and metallic lustres achieve a fine balance of expression), but most of all - and maybe for the first time - a truly finished spatial construction. Previously moreover, many of her works were multidimensional. Exploiting projections and hollows, extroflexions and overlapping planes, grafting extraneous corpuscles into enlightening alcoves, the intention is always to construct a “final object” - book, miniature theatre, showcase - solely by juxtapositioning different media, pigments and signs, cloth and paper... This type of construction for that matter is also clearly visible in the works “hung on the walls” of this exhibition: as in the two fascinating “Sextants”, both derived from wooden pieces accompanied, in one case, by a brass coil: and by subtle pale blue concretions in the other; where the “sextant” is a taut string signifying the magic “point” of a pole whose “magnetism” is much more mysterious and inscrutable than that followed by navigators on their star-guided courses. We find this in the imposing “Crescendo”, a combination of burnt wood and metal; in the graceful

“Counterpoint”, with its juxtaposed metal and subtle perpendicular rod; or in the vibrant “Diapason”, where the dialogue between a stretched cord and the aluminium embracing a curved piece of wood seems to emit a single, penetrating sound... But the works that are new and markedly different to all Benedini’s previous output, though perfectly in tune with the others exhibited - are the two metaphorical “Harps”. These, in effect, fill the whole gallery with their “spatial sound”. In this case too, they are a medley of pieces of wood and metal, most of them ‘found’ but always modified, or expressly made to create these impressive three-dimensional constructions. However, what makes the two “sculptures” - which is what they really are - most unusual is the space included “within” the pieces themselves, as well as “around” them: a space acquiring the same importance and density, I would say, as that of the surfaces or lines of force (strings, wooden and metal segments) incorporating it. The three-dimensionality in fact is certainly more effective and sturdier than that of the earlier structures, also because it has an outstanding multipolarity, as indeed all true sculpture should. Although the “heart” of these works is formed by a spiritually uplifting space (and not by a material physically present), it is precisely its virtual presence (or “intervallarity”, if I may so put it) that is the most remarkable thing about it: making it different to any other creation based on assemblages of elements found and subsequently manipulated. If we try moving closer to the two Harps when the gallery is empty and no hum of voices interrupts the silence, then perhaps we may just be lucky enough to catch a subtle, delicate sound. Issuing from the empty interval between the structure of the Harps, it will find its way to the suprasensitive ears of those with love and faith enough to hear it.

he child of two lands – Tuscany and the Veneto – which means belonging the world by being used to perceiving the existence of (at least) one other species, Francesco Stefanini has made light, and therefore shadow too, the paradigm of his art. Inseparable in painting, one the consequence of the other, light and shadow are nevertheless always complementary: at times they play independent and even divergent, dichotomous roles. Appreciating this impalpable and nevertheless critical borderline, where colour acts as the magic intermediary between one world and another, constitutes one of the main and extraordinary merits of Stefanini’s poetics: a landfall after virtually forty years of artistic research, without any ratification of its definitive conclusion, however. Always starting from an objective datum (a clearing in a wood, the changeable image of the exterior projected onto the curtain in a window, night light between leaves, the sun piercing the foliage of a tree), Stefanini works away and removes everything that is repetitive, deceptive, occasional or casual that nature, in its perpetual motion, offers the eyes. In the manner of a sculptor, he chips and chips away as far as the exhausted arrival at the extreme limit beyond which there is nothing more that can exist, move, breathe and rustle... In premodern painting light was always a metaphor for spirituality and knowledge up until the parenthesis during the fifties-seventies, with conceptualism and minimalism. In much of current art, which is returning to a recognition of its roots both in the classics and in the revolutions of the avant-gardes that have effected far-reaching ideological revisionism on that classicism, light has once again become not only pregnant with symbolic and narrative meanings but is also directly involved in research into “beauty”. This is the case, for example, with Stefanini’s research that uses both oil and canvas on material textures and the very fine pastel filigree on paper or card, as well as other but more marginal techniques, including ceramic sculpture; every pictorial medium, therefore, allows glimpses and almost reveals a world that seems to be perpetually in the balance between one side of existence and the other, in an unstable equilibrium on the ridge between the fullness of the day and the tormenting zone in which it abdicates to the passages of dawns and dusks, on the way between the real and the imaginary. As in his works, nature, what “is” and “Exists” par excellence, becomes a subjective and personal vision, filtered through very fine coloured veils, almost like pieces of crêpe de Georgette which 35

drape mysterious and indefinable entities. Without having to accept Goethe’s romantic thesis on the essence of colours, when we look at Stefanini’s great works of recent years it becomes spontaneous to grasp the idea that their suggestive chromatic power acquires its highest value not so much in scientific physical phenomenology rather than in the skill of the painter who uses then to transmit spirituality and touch the deepest chords of the observer, inducing them to appreciate its secret language. But the magic and intriguing aura which permeates his works is also the result of his technical procedures, whether they employ oils, acrylics or pastels, especially in those from 2011: they feed the eye with evanescent colourings and the mind with the curiosity of discovering how the application of very fine layers of pigment which superimpose themselves in the oils like separate and delicate skins, can generate those roses, those greens, those ochres and those yellows which in the end, as children of nature, reject any comparison with it. And to dispel any doubt that that the summary result of these films is and patient and highly sensitive putting/removing and removing/putting of barely saturated colours or ones capable of imprisoning a high level of intensity, Stefanini’s latest works leave a lines of drippings at the bottom of the canvas consisting of the different pigments used separately like the fringe of an oriental carpet which brings the chromatic warp together at the edges. As a result, while a clearing, the luminous pools of a tree’s foliage, a subtle wind that rustles a bush or the hills that unfold lazily on the horizon lose every natural value, they assume the cipher of an abstract language, becoming a metaphor and no longer a representation of the values of biological life, just like a mandala whose sands disappear, dispersed by the wind. They no longer come to means that wood or that garden but the entire universe with life’s different possible paths. In the same way, pastels, on which Stefanini works as in an engraving, scratching surfaces on which furrows sink the colour, appear in the end almost like the skin of sculptures in which the weight and the sense of time are grafted into those of space, in a concentration of thoughts, metamorphoses and dreams. 36

38
sostenibili costanti in movimento.

Art: a business value by Francesca Masiero* vice president, PBA S.p.A.

e careful not to limit yourself to short term considerations and not to run the risk of hyper-specialization. The koala increasingly adapted and specialized itself to feeding on the sprouts of some kinds of eucalyptus. But when these began to disappear its specialization became its prison and is becoming its death sentence. But then how could this poor bear know that someone would have taken away the trees? But we are not little bears. We know well that there is more than our own world. There are political subjects momentarily outside the frame that could subvert it.” Edoardo Boncinelli (Director of the International School of Advanced Studies, Trieste), ten years ago. Pba’s management started from a reflection of this type when it decided that it wanted a business that would look on change not so much as a constant but rather as an unpredictable phenomenon faced with which the only possible path is adaptation in real time. An adaptive business is one which lets itself be profoundly influenced by what it encounters but which only encounters what is amenable to its own nature. Adaptive management is therefore what the company decides to make of its own creativity after incarnating the true nature of its own business. Pba is curious by nature and grows above all if it creates relationships by means of evolved arguments thanks to which it encounters the new and incarnates it. What does growing mean if not encountering diversity, that which makes us deviate from the course we already know in order to take a new route? And so, from the fortunate encounter with Adele Re Rebaudengo, Pba began to look on Art as a suitable tool for obtaining a new understanding of itself, like a viewpoint that broadens the vocabulary used to speak of oneself. From its support for the restoration of the Teatro Carignano and from the collaboration with Agarttha Arte for the creation of the book, “Teatro Carignano. Dalle Origini al Restauro”, that documented this restoration, Pba discoverd (also thanks to the splendid photography of Gabriele Basilico) that for a company aware of the need to create an “adaptive business”, Art is an inexhaustible source for growing value. In a world that sees it boundaries changing and its needs and necessities being transformed, the need for Beauty remains firm, a fluid constant that moves along with everything that changes. For the same reason, namely put the perception of itself into focus, Pba established a design prize in collaboration with Exposynergy aimed at Beauty in places of hospitality. Beauty which never foregoes its aesthetic value just because it makes itself available to everyone but which actually recognizes an added value in this “to everyone”. Aesthetics and ethics meet to become sustainable constants in motion. In order to avoid the koala’s end, the invitation is to participate in Beauty and let oneself be contaminated 40

by a curiosity for Art in all its forms and destinations. Letting oneself be contaminated by Beauty, participating in “ambitious projects” even when it seems that they have nothing to do with our core business, is a concrete way for ensuring that “the world” talks about us much more and much better than we could ever do ourselves, but constantly and only using the same communications tools. Being desired as a partner of Turin World Design Capital in 2008 and having also supported an encounter/show in Casablanca so at which leading firms could relate the power of Mediterranean architecture, are just some of the tools that Pba has used to skilfully embrace the exploration of unknown fields in order to encounter a broader horizon in which to be framed. Above all doing business means “tackling a business”. It is accepting oneself as miraculously never concluded, never completed witnesses and translators of everything that happens, and forgers of material only because this, transformed and become something else, proposes and invites us to look at the world and to the idea of new ways, ways that previously were not there. Ways open to other subsequent transformations and which must never commit the mistake of defining themselves as the “only one”. PBA S.p.A.

Fabio Zonta

uring his long career, Fabio Zonta has worked as a photographer of architecture and design objects and has documented the output of Italian and foreign artists, up to his pursuit in recent years of personal research into the theme of Democritean atomism. Zonta’s shots investigate atomistic thought in its exquisitely aesthetic sense, concentrating on close-ups of natural elements which seem to best represent the continuous exhaustion and regeneration of life in reproductive processes. “Cactus”, “Paeoniae” and “Chrysantema” are the eloquent titles of the series of photographs dedicated to the flowers of the same name, all immortalized in the fleeting instant between their maximum blossoming and their subsequent wilting, while dandelions appear in “Levità”, all the more ephemeral in their inconsistency. Finally, the sombre images of “Disgregazione” penetrate the roughness of roots, the primitive support of the phylogenetic process of vegetable organisms, and the wrinkled fragility of the leaves now wilted. Zonta depicts his subjects with the scientific precision of the orthogonal projection, alternating sequences of zenithal shots with others viewed from the side which set out the natural elements 45
for rigorous analysis by the eye, interrogating itself about nature’s processes. The object is always placed very much in the foreground with regard to the lens which, at the single instant of the shot, restores its infinite constitutive complexity with crystalline definition. The photographer therefore essentially carries out an operation of careful observation that permits him to grasp the moment, hic et nunc, of the passage of the perennial baton between the life that blossoms and the life that will burst from its seeds. However, Zonta does not limit himself to the realistic reproduction of this crucial moment; on the contrary, as soon as he manages to take possession of it, he immediately subjects it to a process of abstraction and derealization, with the candour of the white or black background which seems to impose an unbridgeable distance between the object photographed at that instant and the other infinite moments of its natural life. The prickly rotundity of the cactuses and the soft curves of the peony petals are flattened on the monochrome backdrops and the layers that make up the object cohabit simultaneously on the same plane, with generally uniform focussing that makes it impossible to establish a spatial hierarchy between them. As a consequence, the observers, though they intensely perceive the solid consistence of the flower and of the root, immediately grasp this reduction to pure bi-dimensionality too. In this way, starting from the observation made by the photographer who removes the single instant to subject to investigation from the time line, nature is amplified in its representation “on the screen”. In the terms in which Jean Baudrillard speaks of it, the human eye observing a screen modifies the paradigm of its sensitivity and carries out an operation which is no longer one of observation, but rather of exploration. The gaze circulates in 46

a fragmented trajectory and with ceaseless motion, decodes the complexity of the image and relates with the individual parts of the whole. If it is true that this manner of visual analysis is only made possible by the complete removal of the object from any extrinsic temporal or spatial relationship, then the understanding that can be arrived at is not that of the entire life cycle of the flower but only one fragment of it. Nature, Zonta seems to be attempting to say to us, does not offer itself to our comprehension in the totality of its processes but, indeed, refuses to let itself be deciphered except at the openly perishable instant of the shot: a moment that is also rich in allusions and references, an instantaneous present that nourishes itself on the dynamic relationship between past and future. And so, in the words of Cesare Cunaccia, Zonta’s photographs become “cryptograms, imbued at the same time with memory and emotion but full of future fervour”.

I

T
his time the curator of the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Viennale, Vittorio Sgarbi, has lost the run of himself. The beautiful national seat in the Corderie in the Arsenale was simply not enough and to honour all the talent that every region of the Peninsula can justifiably claim a “dispersed” Biennale, the ‘Biennale Dispersa’ was arranged. Every corner of Italy has established detached offshoots of the prestigious international event, creating an occasion for attracting the local public to art at its most contemporary. On the other hand the 150th anniversary of national unity has rekindled everyone’s pride in their country and in its beauties. Some of these exhibitive events are particularly successful, moreover, and open the doors to cultural initiatives, reawakening the interest of an extremely vast public. Many regions have been able to use renowned architectural marvels (Palazzo Te in Mantua, Villa Contarini at Piazzola dul Brenta and the Mole Vanvitelliana in Ancona to name but a few) as their venues; others, on the other hand, have dusted off unseen treasures such as Magazzino 26 in the port of Trieste. The largest of the old European warehouses was transformed as a result into a splendid exhibition space as part of an important project for the reconversion of the entire area which aims to become a single great cultural pole. The Old Port is in fact studded with precious industrial architectural structures, including the five piers, the outer breakwater and the hydrodynamic station – also being

restored - which taken together constitute the imposing remains of a port built with the finest technologies of its time. Magazzino 26 constitutes an extraordinary example of nineteenth-century port architecture which stands out not only for its scale but also because of the peculiarity of its character, leading us to the Central European context of which Trieste was one of the cultural capitals. Unfortunately, as is often the case in Italy, the work on the industrial remains was subject to the long bureaucratic procedures to which we are accustomed, before finally arriving at a solution in 2004 with the recovery project directed by Rossella Gerbini and with management of the works entrusted to one of our great architects, Paolo Portoghesi. Its central position vis-à-vis the maritime city only adds prestige to the venue selected for this dislocated Biennale which, right from the first day of its inauguration – on 3 July – has attracted countless tourists as well as the people of Trieste themselves. The development of the exhibition spaces which occupy the three floors of the warehouse not only provides a venue for the 54th Art Biennale but has also being intelligently able to create the occasion for putting various cultural themes side by side: in first place come artists from INCE countries who tell their story and that of their relationship with Italy and its art, underlining the close and rich relationship between Trieste and the east of Europe. Above all their works are doubly significant as they often assume a memento role; such as, for example, Iljia Soskic’s 1975 photographic reportage in the swamp of the water airport nine hours after the death of his friend Pasolini, or Sergey Bratkov’s one on the very young glue sniffers. Ascending the steps we find ourselves looking at a skilful photographic collection curated by Italo Zannier, who recounts a part of the visual culture of Friuli through the images of six authors of different inspiration and ages. Only at the top can we see the works of the 127 artists selected to represent the region’s contemporary art scene. But there is more: the section dedicated to the Regional Academies and Art Institutes entrusted a group of young writers with the decoration of the containers in front of Magazzino 26, inaugurating a series of interventions one after the other by art students during the course of the Biennale. As a result and because of the media interest, the Biennale Diffusa in Trieste has inserted itself with penetrating capillarity not just into the city but also into the dynamics of the international events it is associated with: interviews with the more than enthusiastic visitors, some from quite a distance, can be found on YouTube. They describe beautiful spaces and great skill.

Nedko Solakov, Galleria Civica di Trento
All in (my) order with Exceptions, 52
di Giuseppe G. Blando
“A

All in (my) order with Exceptions, 54
by Giuseppe G. Blando
“A
nd at the happy ending the children come back and put their parents into old age homes”: it is with these apparently reassuring words that Nedko Solakov, with childlike graphic lines, recounts a dark fable with irony and frivolity like a child who is aware of the crude awareness of an adult. The exhibition, “All in (my) Order with Exceptions”, open to the public from 8 October to 5 February 2012 at the Galleria Civica in Trento, brings together 32 works of this artist of Bulgarian origin, created since 1981. The artist lives and works in Sofia where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, but he is recognized at international level, as attested by his participation in the Venice Biennale in 2007. The exhibition at the Galleria Civica in Trento is a stage in an itinerant show, at international level, with the participation of the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, S.m.a.k in Ghent and the Museu Serralves in Porto. Solakov’s works, created using different techniques – drawing, painting and video – are combined as sequences of a narrative plot, with passages and protagonists, on the basis of a storyline invented by the artist himself in orcder to compose the sequences of a fable on the canvasses with an analytical and didactic intention. The scholar of popular fables, V. J. Propp, has identified the presence of constant components in a fairy tale, transmitting the events which mark a heroes path, but Solakov’s artistic creation, while maintaining the characteristics of a story unfolded through images and words, holds no heroic intention. The biographical references are woven into a story and, by
losing their individual connotations, become a message which can reach the other. Through the reference to autobiographical events, the artist takes possession of his life, translating the images of an interior world and, with dramatic veining of colour, documenting experiences and moments of an existence marked by sudden passions lined by a discomposed Eros. The outlines of an existence, still intact and faded, are delineated, like a memory on the pages of a diary, traced on an encrusted and lumpy surface of a wall consumed by time. The stories intertwine, between words and images, with candid declarations, mixed with fears, to create flows of consciousness through verses and depictions arranged on the canvasses without inhibitory brakes. The presence of the written word, as in a poster, assimilates Nedko Solakov to an aspect of conceptual research which, through Visual Poetry, has investigated the relationship between representation and communication, exploring the correspondence between poetry, literature and image. The writing is highlighted in many canvasses as in the pages of a diary, on a dark background, with concretions of colour, filamentary bodies similar to biomorphic corpuscles spread around. These elements are also countermarked by numbers to form a shapeless mass of potential living entities. Without exaggerating the dramatic tones, and by means of a symbolic and co-incised language, the compositional plot identifies the icons of an existential map marked by alarms and uncertainties, announcing the apocalypse of the quotidian, with words like ‘aids’, ‘zoo’ and ‘wanted’, with the anguish of a torment in contract with an extreme vitalism. The semiological code, determined by the use of an alphabetic language, also with the organization of the spatial fabric, becomes a communicative medium, a significant expression that creates relationships between visions, with the construction of a dialogue between the artist and the user. The first Avant-gardes of the twentieth century, between the provocation of Dada and the oneiric intuitions of Surrealism, used words with irony as a component of the visual texture. By structuring a common story, also transmitted through the apparent randomness of a fragmentary vision, Nedko Solakov seems to observe romantic sensitivity in his later New Dada re-elaborations and in the renewed interest towards figurativeness by the Transavanguardia. In “A lover’s discourse: fragments” in 1977, Roland Barthes recognized the uncertainty of the signs belonging to a codex of a dialogue shared by two lovers. In Solakov’s artistic language, as in a dialogue, one listens to the narrative of a universe of meanings, between the symbolic traces of an individual history, between passionate swoops and affections, with the identification, between uncertainties and contradictions, of a system of relationships which envisages hidden exceptions. nell’altra pagina | on the other page

DIVIETO DI TRANSITO Le Gallerie di Piedicastello
di Anna Livia Friel
A

NO TRANSIT Le Gallerie di Piedicastello by Anna Livia Friel
T
wo tunnels were constructed at the beginning of the nineteen-seventies, along with various other infrastructural works, to make it faster to get through the city of Trento. Sacrificed on the altar of the project was first of all Doss Trento, a small hill pierced by the two lanes, and then the suburb of Piedicastello, split in two by the passage of the road with the square on one side and the church on the other. In any case Doss Trento had already seen it all: right from the time of its settlement by the Romans – who disrespectfully called it “Mount Wart” – it had been the custodian and theatre of the city and region’s history, a place of battle and commemorations as well as a true symbol of the town along with its two other hills, San Rocco and Sant-Agata. This was also the reason why, in November 2007, the wise decision was made to close the two tunnels to traffic and a series of “subterranean” upgrading works were commenced. As a result, with a view to the renewal of the entire neighbourhood, the Piedicastello tunnels took on a new meaning, while maintaining their mysterious appearance – large mouths that lead into the mountain. These also transformed themselves into mementos as the footprint remains of passages that will be ancient one day and which add to the wounds in the hill that hosts them while honouring it at the same time in their new guise as galleries but ones for exhibitions. One white and one black: the staging of the first edition of the exhibitions exploits the linkage between the two spaces where, on the occasion of the inaugural show on recollections of the First World War, the dark tunnel is dedicated to hosting the more emotive aspects, memories, interviews and testimonies while its white twin aims to provide a more analytical approach to the same themes. The dichotomic structure of these exhibition spaces has turned out to be a winner and will also be used for subsequent shows. The ample continuous hall that constitutes the space of the gallery/tunnels provides an ideal venue for temporary rearrangements and is suitable for the most varied expressive forms. Next spring, the white gallery will house the first edition of Areaarte Giovani, an event sponsored by the Regional Administration
58
which is intended to spread an artistic culture throughout the area by using students of the subject as the vehicle. Until January 2012, however, the tunnel walls will be occupied by dramatic photographs of “War landscapes”, an exhibition conceived as part of a broader event distributed over 27 different venues along what was once the Italian-Austrian front, illustrating 1919, the year of reconstruction of the places devastated by bombardments and battles. The black gallery provides the stage for other dark events linked to conflict, the Second World War in this case. Recounted along its 300-metre length is the history of the 8th Italian Army in Russia, the ARMIR, from the invasion of Soviet territory in summer 1941 to its rout on the River Don which took the lives of one hundred thousand soldiers and marked the defeat of the Royal Army in the world war. The exhibition, staged in collaboration with leading Russian museums and research bodies, provides a better occasion for remembering and reflecting than many redundant annual anniversaries. But what we find most satisfactory at the end of the visit is the consideration that at a moment of scant resources for culture and education in Italy, a way has been found for reinvesting – though at low cost – in assets that already exist, along with the perfect alchemy between progress, urban transformation and territorial awareness, while focussing attention on problems associated with regional and national identity. And then, of course, as is to be expected from an initiative endowed with a certain “freshness”, is an up-to-date Facebook page. The Gallerie di Piedicastello project was showcased at the last Biennale of Architecture in Venice, hosted in the Italian Pavilion. It has the merit that it has been able to provide a fine reinterpretation of territorial problems will the development of a quality project. The Gallerie also took second place in the national “Ossigeno italiano” competition, established by the «Abitare» magazine which, each year, promotes the most innovative ideas and solutions in the fields of architecture, design, the arts and town-planning. The Project was presented in 2010 at New York’s Columbia University.

Itinerario archeologico della Vicenza romana Archaeological itinerary through Roman Vicenza Palazzo Chiericati, Vicenza
Fifteen sites illustrated by panels in order to discover Vicenza’s Roman history: this is the project prepared by the Commune of Vicenza and the Superintendence for Archaeology which will guide the townspeople and tourists along an archaeological itinerary among the city’s sites from Roman times, on both public and private land. The intention: to make the most of the city’s historical-cultural heritage. The realization of the first six panels was supported by Vicenza’s Soroptimist Club. The project, curated by Vicenza’s Civil Museums with the scientific collaboration of the Superintendence for Archaeological Assets, proposes the organization of a path illustrated by information panels in Italian and English, graphically identical to those produced in 2008 for tracing the Palladian itinerary, but with different colours. The first panels will be positioned in the vicinity of the Teatro Berga area, towards Porta San Giuseppe and towards Piazzetta Gualdi, while there will be other panels at the Criptoportico in Piazza Duomo, along the section of Roman Road beside the Duomo, at San Lorenzo and, finally, beside the archaeological area below Palazzo Trissino. These will be accompanied by two maps, one in Viale Roma and the other in Piazza Matteotti.

The show dedicated to Carlo Ciussi in the rooms of Casa Cavazzini (the new exhibition area of the Udine Civic Museums) is subdivided into ten large exhibition spaces. The Show opens with large-scale works created in the early years of the new millennium and distinguished by squares and oblong rectangles. His works from the end of the eighties are presented in dialogue with the archaeological remains of Casa Cavazzini. These paintings are characterized by the spellbinding repetition of fluid weavings that furrow the surface of the canvas and transform it into a fabric of pictorial forces. Also on display are his works from the Sixties when, invited by Afro, Ciussi took part in the XXXII Venice Biennale in 1964. A book, edited by Luca Massimo, has been published on the occasion of the exhibition and, with its rich illustrations and an anthology of contemporary critical texts, retraces Carlo Ciussi’s entire creative path from the Sixties to the present day. In these works, writes Luca Massimo Barbero, “colour is articulated in a highly emotive key through which Ciussi expresses the need to find an organizational synthesis that can communicate and actively construct the world’s emotion and not simply register and express.”

26|11|2011 - 09|04|2012 Il Settecento a Verona. Tiepolo, Cignaroli, Rotari The Settecento in Verona.
The Centro Internazionale di Fotografia was inaugurated in Verona’s Scavi Scaligeri Museum in 1996 and has remained extremely active ever since with exhibitions of national and international artists and also with the development of learning paths and photography courses. The Scavi Scaligeri can be found just a few steps away from Piazza delle Erbe and the complex is one of the city’s most evocative archaeological sites with Roman, Lombard and Medieval remains. A visit to the Scavi Scaligeri demands a particular frame of mind: the ancient structures, left in view where they were found, are not arranged in an ordered chronological sequence but lead without warning from one period to another, in a fascinating trip through history. The remains of a large burial zone from the Middle Ages can be seen as well as a vast Roman residential area. Also to be found are the remains of the foundations of the fortified residence erected by the Seignior of the city, Alberto Della Scala. Parts of the walls of a hall are visible with an apse at the bottom, built in the late IV century A.D. and destroyed in the fire that devastated the town in 590. The archaeological path ends with an example of a two-colour wall (XI-XII century) which is typical of medieval Veronese architecture.

During the night between 24 and 25 April 1945, the bombardment of the nearby Scaliger bridge almost completely brought down the most renowned Veronese work of the eighteenth century: the Triumph of Hercules that Giambattista Tiepolo frescoed in 1761 on the ceiling of the ballroom in Palazzo Canossa. Today, exactly 250 years later, it is possible to recompense the visitor’s eyes with a virtual reconstruction of this masterpiece. The Museums and Monuments Coordination Unit of the Culture Department and the Superintendence for Historical, Artistic and Ethno - anthropological Assets for the Provinces Pietro Antonio Rotari or Verona, Rovigo and Testa di fanciulla, Collezione privata Vicenza have grasped the occasion to present the public with a panorama of Veronese painting from the high Settecento, and restore the role that is historically due to it. The travels of Pietro Antonio Rotari to the courts of Vienna, Dresden and St. Petersburg on the one hand, and the paintings sent by Giambettino Cignaroli to the sovereigns, noblemen and high prelates of half of Europe on the other, give Veronese art - capable of maintaining its autonomy and originality with regard to the currents dominant in Venice - its fully deserved place in one of the most significant cultural phenomena of the figurative production of that century, the diffusion of Veneto art through the most prestigious international circuits.

The Fondazione Galleria Civica di Trento is presenting All in (my) Order, with Exceptions, the first retrospective show staged by a public Italian institution of one of the most important contemporary artists, Nedko Solakov (1957, Cherven Briag). The exhibition – the broadest and most complete dedicated to the artist to date – constitutes an exhaustive chronological investigation of Solakov’s artistic practice with the presentation of 31 works, one per year from 1981 to 2011, selected by the artist himself. Solakov will intervene in the spaces of the Foundation with drawings and writings placed directly on the white walls that will bring together, in a single path, the works on show, created using different techniques including drawings and watercolours on paper, paintings on canvas, actions on walls, texts, Red 2005 40 disegni e materiali vari mosaics, videos, and Drawings and mixed media reconstructions of enviCourtesy Galleria Continua, ronmental installations San Gimignano / Beijing / Le Moulin Photo by Bernd Borchardt and projects never realized. The exhibition is the fruit of collaboration between the Fondazione Galleria Civica in Trento, the Ikon Gallery (Birmingham), S.M.A.K. (Ghent), and Museu Serralves (Porto). The Opera Civica (TN) programme will continue during the autumn months. This is a project supported by the Autonomous Province of Trento and by the Ministry for Youth in which the Foundation dedicates particular attention to contemporary emerging Trento art, with the promotion and exhibition of works of young Trento artists, along with the publication of a first monographic catalogue.
Sergio Sommavilla, sculptor, from Val Gardena by birth and Bressanone by adoption, will be exhibiting his most recent works in Bressanone’s town gallery. The theme of the show is the head. On display will be small and large heads sculpted in stone, in marble, in wood or in terracotta which is then coated with slip. The artist’s intention is to reduce the countless aspects of the human face into a single image, in an absolute plastic solution which contains them all by means of a progressive simplification of the forms. Sommavilla looks for a form that is the synthesis and essence of reality. His sketches and his plastic works do not pretend any adherence to the real but draw on “a certain idea” which already meant a “devised” image in Raphael. The faces the artist shapes, silent and immobile, nevertheless have a live and real spirit, the specific one of the thought that precedes action. Their reality is the emotional and psychological one of a “sculpture-poem” and, as in poetry, the “true” is more in the expressed feeling rather than in the exterior and objective descriptions. The great artist, Robert Scherer from Val Venosta/ Merano returns to exhibit at Bressanone after many years with a series of fine large-format watercolours entitled “Gustav MahlerKindertotenlieder”. He lives and works at Ala (TN).

FALSAREA Falsi, falsari, equivoci e travisamenti nell’arte
“My works do not explain the world, they change it”. Carl Andre (b. 1935, Quincy/Massachusetts, lives and works in New York) is a living legend. Viewed as one of the founding fathers of Minimal Art, Andre’s radical works strongly influenced the development of art in the twentieth century. He has been revolutionizing the concept of sculpture since the early 1960s, introducing the idea of the work of art as place, sculpture that can be accessed and even sometimes walked over by the public. His works are elemental in the most basic sense of the term and represent the ultimate in simplicity and clarity. The works brought together for the exhibition in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Museion) in Bolzano span Carl Andre’s career from the late 1950s to the present. The show features more than twenty sculptures, with medium-sized and small works, and his famous large scale installations, including “Wirbelsäule” (spinal column) an outdoor work which is rarely exhibited, created in Basel in 1984. Particular attention is devoted to his “Poems”, works of text which are little known but of seminal importance in terms of Carl Andre’s philosophy and art. The exhibition is in collaboration with the Museum Kurhaus Kleve ,Germany, and curated by Roland Mönig and Letizia Ragaglia.

FALSAREA Fakes, counterfeiters, equivocations and misrepresentations in art The phenomenon of the falsification of works of art has also been linked recently to the performance of the financial markets in crisis. The delusion of investors with the stock exchange and the insecurity associated with property operations led many – especially in the middle classes – to buy art: lithographs, silk-screen prints, graphic works by successful artists as well as small sculptures that are proposed by unreliable galleries or by telesales in the € 20,000 to € 40,000 bracket. And it is especially in this niche that fakes lurk, as reported by the heads of the bodies for the protection of the cultural heritage. Furthermore, the increase in the market for art, especially contemporary art, has led some (quite a few) companies to include art in their balance sheets. Not uncommonly and without any authentication, famous artists such as Mirò, Basquiat, Dubuffet, Lichtenstein, Wildt and Merz and, in general, all those artists who fit in easily with market trends, make it possible to inflate companies’ balance sheets. When purchasing these products it is necessary to entrust galleries or auction houses of renowned seriousness. Even auction houses of a certain fame, in fact, have sometimes made themselves accomplices of fraud (or have not fulfilled their role as protectors of collectors with sufficient scrupulousness) to the detriment of private citizens, or of their shareholders in the case of joint stock companies acting in bad faith.

Arte Boccanera is presenting Willy Verginer’s one-man show, “In hoc signo”, curated by Luigi Meneghelli, from 1 October to 3 December. The exhibition features new sculptures and installations created by the Alto Adige artist (b. 1957 in Bressanone) specially for the important Trento event. Verginer maintains a very close relationship with his land, starting from his choice of sculptural material: wood His use of colour is personal and innovative. It invades the forms with shrill monochromatic coverings that increase the figures’ visionary charge. The artist was recently invited to the 54th International Venice Art Biennale – Trentino Alto Adige Region (2011). Willy Verginer will be present in person at the inauguration at 6 p.m. on Saturday 01 October 2011 which will be addressed by Luigi Meneghelli.

Stephan Guillas
Stephan Guillais, nato in Francia, vive e lavora a Barcellona. Nascono così le sue serie Ikonen, Imperium Karnaval e Out of the movie, in esclusiva in Italia per Il Melone. Stephan Guillais, born in France, lives and works in Barcelona. After an initial abstract period, the artist directed his research towards the figurative, employing a personal technique of his own: he uses old boards and after applying several layers of colour on them, he makes incisions and scratches using a variety of rudimentary tools to obtain human figures with a Renaissance air. Hence his Ikonen, Imperium Karnaval and Out of the movie series, created exclusively for Il Melone in Italy. The artist tells us: “The magic of painting is in being able to resist and transcend constrictions and give the sensation that the image imposes and expresses many things in one; not a story, but a subtle interior melody in flight between two moments.”

The Perl’A Gallery will be changing its look for two months on the occasion of the 54th Venice Biennale. After the retrospective dedicated to Afro, the Gallery is now presenting a solo exhibition of Mirta Carroli. Mirta Carroli was born in Brisighella in 1949 and lives in Bologna. She is one of the most interesting players in Contemporary Italian Sculpture and is bringing new art works to the lagoon, ones she expressly created for the spacious rooms of the Gallery, a space originally conceived for an Ettore Sottsass one-man show. The Gallery will appear as a sequence of great black and white boxes in which Mirta Carroli’s works will stand out in their mysterious, severe and, at the same time endearing allusiveness.

In the series of formal portraits, “Friend of a Friend”, the person is extrapolated from the surrounding environment and is free to represent himself without forcing. What remains after the shot is the undeniable recording of what each of us is, or would like to be. In the room soaked in the dynamism of the greenery of New Zealand the collection, “Rencontres d’Arles”, in which the artist captures and recounts the experiences of the visitor during his first trip to the Arles festival of photography, will be on display. The show is one of the events of “Bassano Fotografia - Quando l’immaginazione prende forma”.

Carmelo Zotti
Galleria Flaviostocco is presenting a selection of works on paper that the artist, born in Trieste but Veneto by adoption, who passed away a few years ago, left in more than half a century of painting, a body of works of considerable scale and complexity, and narratively heterogeneous. Zotti’s portraiture with expressionist echoes from the early fifties was followed by his brief fling with abstraction and, at the beginnings of the sixties – after a long trip to South America – his narratives dense with traces of representational art and colour. Then in the seventies came the maturing of the symbols-brand of his poetics, empowered by fields of bright chromaticism, continuing on to the beginning of the twenty-first century with works centred on dialogue/gestures between figures, on obsession and on the marvel of life in its entirety.

The Primo Piano art gallery, which has always invested in the search for promising young artists, also includes Mara Fabbro from Castello di Aviano among its permanently represented painters. Enraptured by her passion for art, she began to draw at an early age and then, self-taught, carried out significant research and experimentation with sandy impasti worked with colour. Epicentres, energy of the earth: these are themes that identify her original pictorial sense. “I find her work to be rigorous, rich in conceptualism and symbolical references. I hope that she receives the interest and consideration she deserves.” Stefano Zecchi

Enrico Mulazzani
Enrico Mulazzani’s painting supports itself on the thread of vibration, it reaches different layers of equilibrium by putting its trust on asymmetrical positions, and it moves from the centre towards the margins, from top to bottom, between areas blocked by the weight of the colour and others that are lightened in the encounter with emptiness. The sign acts like musical writing which envisages dense scores of material and intervals that exalt the beat. The gaze gravitates around the densest parts but does not ignore the informal residues, the dust that conceals where the pigments leach consistency and crumble like sounds that lose their way in the silence. Irruptions of the sign, brief stops, fluid slippages: every event exhausts itself in the disgregation of matter, from a maximum intensity to its extreme faintness, as flashes of light appear and vanish spontaneously. Galleria Valmarana Braga Vicenza
Ivo Sedazzari
The gallery’s owner, Alberto Tosin, has organized a one-man show entitled “Ritratto Autografo” (“Autograph Portrait”) of the painter, Ivo Sedazzari, from 15 October to 2 November 2011. It is a highly particular series of works in oil on canvas that depict chromatic intuitions based on the fact that the autograph presages the expression of an individual’s personality; it is the history of the sign which speaks for itself, but also a complex landscape which changes with time. This sign becomes design on the canvas that Ivo Sedazzari elaborates with the invention of a new way of depicting the intimate being of the people portrayed through their signatures. This artistic intuition, which he himself named “autograph portrait”, creates an interesting introspective path which brings out the most profound nuances of the human soul.

Spazio Iachemet Vicenza
When the paths of passion and collaboration between different talents flow together the result is a super highway. This is what happens in “Spazio Iachemet” in Via Cattaneo 14/16, a piece of industrial archaeology that was the home of the Beltrame steelworks in the thirties and later became a Ferrari dealership and workshop. Taken over and restored by the estate agent, Diego Iachemet, for his offices and collection of vintage cars, the factory remained a workshop for historical motors with the addition of an exhibition space. Art is also a great passion for Diego and his wife, Elena, who with the help of friends who are experts in the sector host the works of contemporary artists exhibited in curious and evocative cohabitation with the old glories of motoring.

Bassano Fotografia 2011

This stupendous artefact, already exhibited at the Sartirana Textile Show in 2009 and published in the English review, Hali, has an usual iconographic arrangement. The grid motif of the field, an expression perhaps of the “collar of clouds” or a symbol of life’s longevity, is a typical courtley element of Chinese art, one with links to elements that we find instead in products from the Oases in the Xinjiang area, such as the design in sections of the border with the representation of the Vajra, symbol of the emperor’s divine and temporal power. The Panto Textile Art gallery displays artistic, rare and always particular artefacts and highlights their essence and soul. Panto Textile Art will be exhibiting from 9 to 18 September at “Antiquari ai Carraresi 2011”.

Villa Trissino Marzotto Trissino (VI)
It is possible to admire an extraordinary and complete collection of tapestries in Villa Trissino Marzotto. Entitled “Les enfants jardiniers” it is housed in a room specially designed by the architect, Tomaso Buzzi. The six enormous tapestries, commissioned in 1552 by the Gonzagas from the Pannemaker works in Brussels, took eight years to weave with threads of silk, wool, gold and silver and depict bucolic scenes based on preparatory cartoons by Raphael and Giulio Romano. Then, in the nineteenth century room on the second floor of Villa Trissino Marzotto we can find the rich picture gallery with the exhibition of important paintings from the Macchiaioli school.
Armonia Interni
Armonia Interni, perennially attentive to the evolution of living, constantly carries out research at international level and produces designer and one-off products, as unique as works of art. Armonia Interni was among the first companies in northeast Italy to organize cultural works in its showroom, combining design with art. Highly successful at the end of the nineties was the show by the painter, Gavino Crispo with the display of the most significant design works by Moroso. Highly evocative and spectacular was the combination of Edra Diamond pieces with Aurum jewels, while “Mobile che suonano”, pieces of furniture made by hand like musical instruments, was rich in emotion. Every year, an event that repeats itself, always new, always artistic.
Hotel Palladio Vicenza
The Hotel Palladio was built with a view to energy saving and the use of natural materials. Techno logical elements have also been exploited as supports for artworks. Above the red sofa is a black heating and cooling panel whose finish is by the Vicenza artist, Grazia Fortuna Ward, while the coloured finishes of all the other panels are the work of the same artist. To mask the air intakes we called on the Ferrara artist, Paola Paganelli, who composed the sculpture located at the entrance using simple treated edge protectors combined in bundles. We believe we have achieved the desired effect, namely harmony between the design, contemporary art and the antiquity of the container.
