2-3), in massone nelle Marche e in Abruzzo e altre ancora.

INTRODUCTION Unfired earth, together with wood and stone, is one of the most ancient building materials. The different building techniques, which depend upon the different morphological characteristics of the soil, but also upon the different cultural and environmental contexts, are evidence of the research into the choice of the material, the conception of the building, the way the building site is to be organised. Everywhere in the world, there are extremely interesting examples of unfired earth buildings, from the mosques of Mali to earth buildings in Yemen (fig.1), from the urban aggregates in Morocco to prestigious buildings in Europe, right up to the simplest rural homes scattered more or less everywhere. In many regions of Italy, there still exist, in both urban and rural contexts, many unfired earth buildings: they include the ladiri buildings in Sardinia, the pis or adobe constructions in Piedmont (figs. 2-3), the massone buildings in Marche and in Abruzzo and many more. They highlight the variety of technological systems, which have characterised the earth building scene of the other countries. Starting from the post-second world war period, the diffusion of materials introduced on the market by the modern building production led to an abandonment of the unfired technique, then considered practically obsolete and, above all, for many an indisputable (however this is untrue) sign of poverty, and of social and cultural outcasts, to be removed from memory. The inevitable consequence of this behaviour was a gradual but irreversible loss of the know-how of the building techniques, that practically remained only in the hands and minds of the old builders; at the same time,

the total lack of the necessary maintenance work caused many constructions to fall into an irrevocable state of degradation, thus leading to the loss of a patrimony rich in history and knowledge. Only recently in Italy has there been a certain consolidation of the interest shown in this fragment of building history, targeted, firstly, at the awareness, at the safeguarding and at the potential recovery of this patrimony. Earth architecture though, does not only belong to history: it is also reality, innovation, and progress. At a time when concepts like sustainability , ecology , respect for the environment , all belong to the common language of living, the use of unfired earth, introduced at an the application level and in terms of performance, has again aroused particular interest on the building materials scene. In the last few years, experts of the sector, but also several public administration bodies, on both a regional and local level, have been committed to promoting site identification operations and to the recovery of existing buildings, paying attention also to the innovative aspects.1 In France, from the beginning of the eighties, at Isle d Abeau, near Lyon, a pilot project on an earth building residential area, promoted by the Ministry for the Environment, was a good occasion for the re-examination of the traditional techniques and for work to be done especially in terms of innovation. It was in those same years, but work started much more recently, when a project by G. Minke was launched, involving the construction of a village in pis , on the outskirts of Kassel. W ithout a doubt, the re-launch today of

unfired earth as a building material, calls for particular attention. In the current construction process, characterised by the interaction of specialists from different sectors, the application development of this material must pass scientifically tested proposals, similarly to what takes place with other building materials. The need for a standard, which groups together all of the valuable international experiences is therefore essential. It must define the application contexts of unfired earth and identify the testing procedures for assessing the physical and mechanical characteristics.

A RAMMED EARTH BLOCK: PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT There may be different parameters that motivate the choice of a building technique: irrespective of the vocation of the material available, there are routes which, in respect of the environment, may privilege easy to use products, which require little maintenance work. In view of this, the rammed block seems to be the basic element that is best for a mechanised production, with the use of equipment used in varying contexts and usage realities (from the simple manual press, suitable for the needs of small villages or favela , to the complex large production systems). In any case, the adoption of compacting and regularising the form, through the presses, contributes considerably to the quality of the constructed element. Starting from these presumptions, this research, focussing on the low cost homes for developing countries, with particular attention being paid to self-help building processes, has led to the consideration that the use of pressed and rammed earth blocks is strategic. On the contrary to pis , the block allows for the creation of quite thick wall structures, suitable for the needs of the context the writer has been working on for some time now. The perfection of the testing procedures for identifying the physical-mechanical characteristics of the compressed earth blocks, has over the past few years, been the object of extensive and articulated international testing, promoted by the RILEM TC EBM Earth as Building Material Commission. The Material and Component Testing Laboratory of the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico Institute of Turin has taken part in the Commission s work, developing a compression, bending and induced tensile strength testing campaign, aimed at validating the procedures. The overall results obtained have also allowed for the identification of the relationship between bending rupture tension and compression strength, an interesting parameter for those operating in this field, where the bending strength test is the easiest to carry out (fig. 4). The earth used for the experiment was taken from an area near Alessandria, a typical zone where pis building is done. Before making the blocks, the largest sized aggregates were separated, passing the earth through a 4 mm. screen; the successive granulometry analysis gave the following percentages: sand = 42% silt = 44% clay = 14% To follow is the chemical composition (expressed in weight %): loss after liming = 5.5% SIO2 = 70.8 Fe2O 3 = 4.4

compacting force of about 2 Mpa. The samples (5 for each different test) were stabilised by adding different percentages of cement (0%-4%-7%-10%), according to what was laid down in the RILEM context. As an alternative to cement, it is also possible to use vegetal origin products, as well as lime or bitumen as stabilising elements. The former, even if found in the different traditions, require particular attention, as the uncertain usage procedure calls for careful and extensive experimentation, according to internationally validated procedures. To follow are the outlines of the procedures used for the tests and the results obtained during the experiment.

were used, with a thin layer of mortar in between (fig. 5). In correspondence with the surfaces in contact with the metallic sheets, the shearing stress was reduced by introducing elements each made up of a thin sheet of Teflon together with one of neoprene, as well as by lubricating the surfaces in contact between the two parts. The diagram shown in fig. 6 highlights the variation of the compression strength of the samples depending on the variation of the quantities of cement used as a stabiliser.

Induced tensile strength or Brazilian tests The diagram in fig. 10 shows the results of the tests, carried out according to the diagram in fig. 9. As an integration to the above-mentioned tests, which refer to the determination of the mechanical characteristics, the blocks are usually subjected to other tests (erosion, absorption, insulation, frost resistance), which aim at assessing reaction to water and wear. Fig. 11 documents an erosion test, carried out by subjecting a limited portion of the block in question to a jet of water (at a pressure of 1.4 bar) for one hour, by placing a shower nozzle at a distance of 18 cm. Nonstabilised blocks do not pass this type of quite severe test, as they turn into mud in just a few minutes: on the contrary, the rammed blocks pass the test and after an hour they show more or less negligible traces of erosion, depending on the percentage of stabiliser used.
CONSTRUCTION HINTS: THE STUDY OF THE FORM OF THE BLOCK As is well known, the quality of the wall is tied to the quality of its component materials; however, it is also highly influenced by the care taken to build it. In the context of low-cost housing, often in self-help building situations with nonspecialised labour, the good execution of the wall (the straightness of the walls, the regularity of the joints, etc.) has always brought about considerable problems. W ith the aim to make the building process simpler, the Material and Component Testing Laboratory of the Department of Sciences and Techniques for Building Site Processes of the Politecnico Institute of Turin, have perfected modifications to be made on the GEO 50 manual press by the company Altech for producing formed blocks, with relief and flattened effects, (fig. 12). Of particular interest is that the modifications made, which without a doubt facilitate the wall s

construction, do not penalise the productivity of the press, which remains identical to that of the simple parallelepiped blocks. This equipment integrates perfectly with the self-help building processes; the regular dimensions of the blocks allows for the adoption of a very fluid earth and binding mortar, of a very limited thickness, installed with the aid of a simple container, without the need for the trowel. The effectiveness of the shaped blocks, made with the modified press, has been tested by subjecting wall samples (measuring about 90 x 90 cm.) to tests of unconfined compression (fig. 13), unconfined compression and side thrust and diagonal compression. The results of the two latter above mentioned tests were particularly interesting, during which the mechanical connection between the blocks highlighted a substantial improvement in performance. As a further preliminary experiment, in preparation for a self-help building job in north-east Brazil, a full size element was constructed, which reproduced the wall structure planned for the prototype building on the drawing board (fig. 14). The unconfined compression behaviour of the wall element is seen in the load-deformation diagram in fig. 15.

FROM LABORATORY TESTS TO EXPERIENCES ON SITE The project planned for the favela Cuba de Baixo in Sap (Paraiba, Brazil) develops over two phases: — training course for the use of the press and on the quality control of production; — training site for the building of the prototype building. Following this first experience, the residents of the area began to replace their crumbling taipa homes (fig. 16) with new rammed earth block buildings. Other images, accompanying the text (figs.17-20) show the site activity: the construction phases of the walls, the regular wall texture, the completed prototype building.

W ith the current demands for quality, even unfired earth, like other building materials, must make reference to testing methodologies, which must be harmonised on an international level. It will be necessary to identify parameters common to the different construction techniques and they will each need to be specific, with the aim of correctly assessing the performances offered by the many unfired earth application potentials. The close interaction between the application, experimentation and testing, will contribute to development and innovation. The writer recalls having visited, in 1992, a briqueterie located on the outskirts of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), where perforated, extruded elements were produced in rammed unfired earth, using, in fact, equipment of Italian production. The creation of light-weight elements may favour the prefabrication of high quality, easy to assemble building components, thus eliminating the doubts involving the traditional site. Much remains to be done in the research sector for optimising the entire fili re of unfired earth; last but not least, an assessment of the potential for the use of natural stabilisers of a vegetal origin must be made, without ignoring the impact their use may have upon the quantities available.
