ELISABETTA DIAMANTI GRAFIKK - ROMA 14.5 - 3.7. 2016
DANIELE BIANCHI MALERI - VENEZIA 29.7 - 11.9. 2016
VELKOMMEN ELISABETTA DIAMANTI, Roma: grafikk DANIELE BIANCHI, Venezia: malerier
ELISABETTA DIAMANTI: GRAFIKK I TOPPKLASSE.
“ Through its remarkable combination of elements to form a constant interplay of spatio-temporal references, D. Bianchis painting strikes an essential balance between conservation and innovation” (S S de Burgis) Saverio trekker også noen morsomme linjer tilbake i historien fra 90-tallet; se første avsnitt i artikkelen: Ryn, Polen/Malgorsata - Saverio - Paolo Smali - Pahr Iversen Fuglsang-Damgaard - Stenico - Ticki/Nådøy - og så Daniele Bianchi og Serena Nono som blir valgt av Saverio til Faro Symposium 2006-7.

ANIMUS
ANIMUS I 80 x 60 cm 2014
ANIMUS is a work made of 8 engravings that should be read as a result of cognitive, emotional and mental experience, to which the artist attributes the main significance of her creative action. The need to present reality just like eyes can catch it - at a glance, rational and immediate - is the source of the first plate. In light of this need, slak wax is chosen as favorite technique, the only one that’s capable of immortalizing, like a photograph, the perfect moment when the subject is captured exactly as it appears. After obtaining the imprint of plant elements, it begins a
process of concentration on specific details of the matrix. The 8 printings that come to light are independent works and, at the same time, like studies aimed at eviscerating the sensitive nature of the subject, like windows opening to the soul of their internal structure. 8 as a graphic sign, made of two simple circles, equal and opposite; two fetuses inside the female womb, the shape of an hourglass where we can sense the passing of time, a 6
silver filigree, a time of memory that, layer by layer, slowly turns into sand and finally into dust. A time that runs through all of us, a breath of wind that bends the vegetal elements engraved on the plate. Slowly, the recognizable appearance of real data gives way to the idea that the artist got of it. It is the manifestation of this idea that closes the circle of action. Finally, the intervention on the plate with drypoint, burin and berceau is the symbolic evidence that the image has been internalized.

We are walking towards something absolute which has no maze of paths to reach it or to depart – what draws us is the outset in the field of tranquillity across the sky where the light dawns we walk drawn by the light Ugo Fasolo I first became acquainted with the splendid Norwegian region of Rogaland, with Stavanger and its charming environs and isles, a few years back – in the early 2000s. A few years before I had had the opportunity to attend some workshops in Ryn, in the Baltic area of northern Poland. I later got some students from the Venice Academy of Fine Arts involved, along with some young Italian artists, including – most recently – Davide Battistin and Paolo Smali. When the two of them accepted the invitation and travelled to Poland, I was unable to join them due to other commitments. However, I learned that they got in touch with other international artists, including Vibeke Fuglsang-Damgaard, a Norwegian artist from Stavanger who shortly afterwards visited Venice with her class (she was still working as a school teacher at the time). It was on this occasion that we first met in person. We had the opportunity to discuss her experience in Poland, her art and our common acquaintances, such as Kjell Pahr-Iversen, another artist from Stavanger whom I had met at the previous workshop in Ryn. Vibeke came to visit us in Venice again a number of times, including for the Biennale, in the company of her husband Tore Jensen. The latter at the time was an industrialist with a keen interest in art and eager to promote artistic events in his own beautiful region and on his wonderful family islet of Nådøy. Following
the inauguration of the sculptures which Alessandro Stenico had created there and the publication of a first catalogue – featuring an essay I had written on the artist entitled His Mother’s Voice – with the Faro Project we started planning a series of events and exhibitions between Nådøy and Finnøy. In addition to the cultural initiatives implemented and the considerable interest shown towards art, what struck me the most of these places was the light flooding the fjords, against the backdrop of the sky, sea, cliffs, an expanse of green meadows occasionally rising as gentle hills, and dense, brown-green forests. The light would change suddenly, according to the vagaries of the weather and climate. Light is certainly a basic element for artistic research and for vision in general and offers a subject worthy of study, particularly in painting. This is why I decided to invite Daniele Bianchi and Serena Nono to take part in the summer 2006 workshop. Despite their differences, in the research of both artists I found something that fitted well with that Scandinavian world: for Bianchi, light; for Serena Nono, a certain streak of existentialist expressionism which also reflected itself in that landscape. Ten years on, Daniele Bianchi is back in Norway to present his works, after about a month spent working in the country, immersed in the intense and ever-changing light of its summer. The Otto-huset in Judaberg, in the municipality of Finnøy, is hosting an exhibition by the artist. He already exhibited a series of small works there in 2006, but these are only partly illustrated in the catalogue published for the workshop. That too was a personal exhibition, of which I gave an oral presentation in English at the inauguration before an invited audience. I remember that on that
occasion I spoke of how the artist’s treatment of colour and light was in keeping with the great Venetian tradition. Tonal painting is the stylistic hallmark of this deep-rooted tradition, from its origins down to the work of those Spatialists operating in Venice, such as Virgilio Guidi or indeed Bianchi’s grandfather Mario Deluigi, who also focused on the fundamental element of light in its intrinsic association with colour. Daniele Bianchi appears to be approaching the origins of this research by drawing inspiration from northern European painters and their light – which is why I decided to invite him to share this exciting experience. What could be better than to experience certain feelings directly in Scandinavia, with a light which is ultimately different from that of Venice yet precisely for this reason complementary to it? Consider, for instance, the differences in lighting between Canaletto’s vedute of Venice and Bellotto’s ones, or between the former’s views of London and the latter’s views of Warsaw. I asked Bianchi to write some personal reflections for the catalogue to be published at the end of the workshop. After some hesitation, he jotted down a few succinct impressions that suggest a synaesthetic perception of the Norwegian landscape, as though he had always been part of it. The artist expresses his sense of affinity for what is an unequivocally Zen landscape: an intimate landscape that is deeply meditated upon and assimilated. These feelings are thus transformed into endless shades of colour, hues that have almost alchemically settled within Bianchi’s memory, where they undergo constant transformation. “Long days with leaden skies, immersed in shades of grey. As if a white transparent veil (cloud, mist) had 14
covered the ground. Red becomes grey-red; green becomes grey-green… long twilights await the expected night, which never seems to arrive…” (Daniele Bianchi, Views from an island, p. 33). This palette is alive in the artist’s memory, but has been enriched by further variations and developments which endure as experiences firmly impressed upon a preexisting support, taking the form of a mode of pictorial expression subject to countless nuances. Beyond the usual familiar names of Munch and Ibsen, or even the outstanding yet little-known Lars Hertevig (a veritable genius loci), Daniele Bianchi’s interests largely overlap with those of the sublime and still Romantic Johan Christian Dahl and even more so of Peter Balke – the “Norwegian Turner”, who was fascinated by the weather and natural landscapes of Norway, with their fjords, northern lights, mountains and waterfalls. Through its remarkable combination of elements to form a constant interplay of spatio-temporal references, Daniele Bianchi’s painting strikes an essential balance between conservation and innovation.

“Long days with leaden skies, immersed in shades of grey. As if a white transparent veil (cloud, mist) had covered the ground. Red becomes grey-red; green becomes grey-green… long twilights await the expected night, which never seems to arrive…”
