Testo inglese In the last decade the multirobot systems have become relevant in literature and in real applications. The interest for these structures comes from the possibility of performing complex or distributed task, in efficiently solving the computational problems through the parallelism and in the increasing of robustness thanks to the physical and architectural redundancy. In this project, the activity of the research unit will be focused on the development and implementation of coordinate SLAM techniques in order to create a mobile infrastructure providing localization and communication services among the autonomous agents in unstructured and potentially dynamic environments. Starting from this context, the research project proposes the investigation of two different scenarios: in the first scenario the environment where a team of robots operates is static, while in the second it is dynamic. This distinction reflects in two strategies: in the first one all the elements of the multirobot system move simultaneously, and the SLAM process is performed exploiting the static elements of the environment; the second strategy relaxes the static hypothesis about the environment, requiring alternate movements of the components of the team. In the first scenario, the interest of the POLITO unit is devoted to robustness, consistency and scalability topics related to the offered localization services. In particular we intend to investigate, in terms of methodological and application results, different combined approaches of single-robot and multirobot SLAM with consistency cross validation. While in literature the problems related to the SLAM observability are now well known, only recently the estimate consistency problems of the EKF SLAM have been underlined. Comparatively few attention has been devoted to techniques that allow the online detection of inconsistencies of the estimates. Robustness and fault tolerance topics are essential requirements for applications such as rescue, monitoring, surveillance, etc. The second scenario investigates the effects of the presence of dynamic elements in the environment where the multirobot team moves. Such elements may compromise the applicability of classical approaches based on the hypothesis of static environment. Many approaches recently proposed in literature exploit a-priori information about the structure of the scenario or apply classification techniques to distinguish static landmarks from dynamic elements of the environment. In this context the research unit intends to investigate an approach where mapping and SLAM phases alternates. This decoupling may present two benefits: on the one hand it may better represent the dynamic elements of the environment, on the other hand it may allow to close local loops, limiting divergence phenomena related to the proposed approach. Finally the unit will focus on problems connected to the information flows in the communication networks among the agents and related to the integration of radiofrequency technologies (RFId,UWB) essential for robust implementations of the proposed SLAM techniques.

Testo inglese In the last decade the multirobot systems have become relevant in the literature and in real applications [2], [20], [24], [30]. The interest for these structures comes from the possibility of performing complex or distributed tasks, in solving efficiently computational problems by means of the parallelism and in the increase of robustness due to the physical and architectural redundancy. The description of the state of the art in multirobot systems can be sectioned along different dimensions. One of the most widespread classifications distinguishes systems on the basis of the architecture adopted [11], [18]. Therefore there exist centralized architectures, hierarchical architectures, distributed architectures, hybrid arhitectures. Each strategy differs in terms of robustness, foult tolerance, communication ability and computational complexity. Another classification relies on the channel used by the elements of the multirobot system to exchange information. Usually there are strategies based on communication [19], passive recognition [15], or stigmergy [24], depending on how the robots exchange information, directly, through mutual observation or starting from the perception of the effects that the actions performed by the components of the team produce on the environment. The research activity in the field of exploration of unstructured environments and simulataneous localization and mapping for mobile robots can be considered mature in the case of single robots [4], [7], [26], while many problems remain open and only partially solved in the case of teams of robots [20], [17]. The simultaneous use of more than one robot requires solving coordination problems at various levels, starting from communication and syncronization problems among rovers and their mutual localization, passing to sharing the maps generated by the SLAM algorithms and to the coordinated exploration of unstructured environments [9]. SLAM can be thought as a multi-dimensional problem, where the estimates are used to build a probabilistic map [26], and the positions of the robots are modelled with distributions. Such distributions are considered to be Gaussian or not depending on the approach adopted. The most used algorithms are based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) [1],[22], on the Extended Information Filter (EIF) [25], and on Particle Filters [23]. The differences among the approaches, apart from the different estimation algorithm,s refer to the different sensors adopted and to how much the control architecture is decentralized, as well as the homogeneity of the team. If the problems related to the SLAM observability [3] are known in literature, only recently the consistency problems of EKF SLAM have been highlighted [13]. Comparatively few attention has been pointed to inline detection of estimation inconsistencies. Robustness and fault tolerance topics are fundamental qualification for applications such as rescue, monitoring, surveillance ecc. These scenarios increase the complexity in solving the SLAM problem, since the presence of dynamic elements impairs the applicability of classical approaches based on the staticity hypothesis of the environment [14], [28]. Every task in populated environments requires basically to be able to suitably represent the dynamic informations relative to the state of the elements of the scenario. Many approaches simply filter the spurious parts of the dynamical elements of the environment, and exploit a-priori information about the structure of the scenario [16] or classification techniques to distinguish static landmarks from dynamical elements of the environment. However, this strategy is not applicable when the dynamical elements are fundamental elements of the representation (e.g. Mobile obstacles to avoid, victims in rescues applications, intruders in surveillance applications). The majority of the approaches developed to model the information of the environment are based on occupancy maps, topological maps, or landmark-based maps [24], [26]. In exploration problems the representations based on occupancy maps assume particular relevance, since they permit to have a description of the scenario with better resolution. Many approaches coordinate the exploration strategy using these discrete models of the environmtent, on the basis of the frontier cells [6]. Different exploration algorithms based on the evaluation of costs and benefits associated to the exploration of each cell by each robot have been developed [8], [10], [27]. Other strategies [21] assume that some robots proceed as explorers, while others have the role of observers of their position, exchanging the roles every time that an obstacle arises between an explorer and an observer. When large arease have to be explored with many robots, it may be convenient the use of RFId Radio Frequency Identification) devices in order to coordinate the exploration strategy, and to make it more efficient [29]. Recent examples of multirobot systems applications include the space exploration, container handling in havens, buildings, toxic garbage disposal [5], and security, [12], [24].

The unit POLITO will strictly cooperate with the other two units, carrying on in particular activities within the MANET WP. In the following the research proposals related to the WPs are described in detail, stressing the interaction requested by the fusion of different disciplines in the project. LOCAL The research activity of the POLITO unit within the LOCAL WP will be addressed to the development and the implementation of coordinated SLAM techniques in order to create a mobile infrastructure for localization and communication among autonomous agents in unstructured and potentially dynamic environments. As an introduction to the activity proposed by POLITO, we describe a scenario where the research interests of the units are involved. In the project it is proposed an approach where a team of agents is employed in unknown environments to exhaustively explore macro-areas. The team of mobile robots is heterogeneous and it is composed by two types of robots, the service agents and the exploration agents. The first ones have to supply communication and localization services to the exploration agents, while the last ones move in undiscovered areas according to strategies detailed in the EXPLR WP. The team is placed at the entrance of the macro-area, assuring the (partial or complete) wireless connectivity among the agents and mutual visibility (exploiting the available sensors). When the placement is done, the agents estimate their mutual positions obtaining measurements of their own pose in a robocentric common reference frame. Then the exploration agents can use the communication and localization infrastructure offered by the service agents, and query them to receive information about their position. As a consequence, the whole team will move in a coordinate and cooperative way, performing "foraging and coverage" tasks. In this scenario, the research activity of unit POLITO focuses on studying localization strategies that allow the service agents to provide a reliable localization to the exploration agents. To achieve this goal, collaborative active SLAM that allow the service agents to ensure all-to-all communication (if possible) and localization to the exploration agents are proposed ( topics considered in the MANET and EXPLR WPs). Particular attention will be devoted to the robustness and consistency of the proposed algorithms. In the research project we intend to investigate two different scenarios: in the first one the environment where the team of agents operates is static, while in the second it is dynamic. This distinction leads to two different strategies: in the first one the two types of agents move simultaneously, and the SLAM is performed on the basis of static features of the environment (LOCAL-1); the second strategy relaxes the hypotheses of static environment, requiring alternate movements of the two types of agents (LOCAL-2). LOCAL-1) Localization services in static environments In this scenario, the service agents perform collaborative active SLAM based on environmental features and/or on the other agents, moving together with the exploration agents. The active SLAM allows to impose other performance constraints on the localization accuracy of both the types of agents and iterates until acceptable values for the estimation covariances are obtained. Recently in the literature a particular interest has been addressed to extend SLAM techniques to multirobot systems [20]. The section devoted to the state of the art gives an overview on the most common algorithms. In this context, the interest of the POLITO unit is devoted to robustness, consistency and scalability issues. In particular, we intend to investigate the following approaches from the methodological and application point of view: a) multirobot SLAM with features belonging to the environment We consider a centralized architecture that gathers the information about the commands executed by each agent and performs a global estimation of the poses of the agents on the basis of the acquired measurements. The computational load of this method grows as the square of the dimension of the state vector, and it is particularly difficult to know if the SLAM process is consistent, independently of the technique adopted. This is one of the most common approaches in literature, [22], and has the advantage that puts the computational load on a single platform, while the others are free to perform other tasks (path planning, task assignment, etc...). b) single robot SLAM with cross-validation of the features belonging to the environment. Using an online approach based on Bayesian filters (e.g. EKF, UKF, SEIF, Particle Filters), each agent maintains a vector containing the estimates of its own state and the position of the observed features. Since the multirobot system performs redundant estimations on the positions of the features, it is possible to check the consistency of the estimates, in order to improve the robustness of the whole system, especially with respect to unknown correspondences in the observed features. This approach scales with the number of agents, since each agent solves a classical SLAM problem, and the only additional complexity is in the consistency tests. c) multirobot SLAM with cross-validation and features belonging to the environment. The team is subdivided into two sub-teams. The first exploits the approach described in (a) while the second uses the approach drawn in (b). The estimates coming from the single SLAM processes (b) are used to improve the robustness of the estimate coming from the multirobot SLAM process. This solution, as a compromise between points (a) and (b), adds robustness and heterogeneity to the task assignment. Moreover, we study the possibility to design an optimal team partitioning, in order to ensure the robustness and scalability specifications imposed by the particular application. d) single robot SLAM with cross-validation and heterogeneous features Differently from point (b), in this approach each agent, besides jointly estimating its position and the positions of the features of the environment, maintains in the state vector an estimate of the position relative to the other agents, as they were mobile features performing known movements affected by noise.

Ministero dell'Istruzione dell'Università e della Ricerca On the one hand, the unit POLITO intends to detect the hypotheses that allow the convergence of this approach, on the other hand it intends to investigate the possibility of performing consistency tests either on the position of the features, or on the mutual positions of the agents. As a natural corollary to the proposed consistency analyses, the unit intends to study recovery techniques that re-establish the correct operation of the mobile infrastructure when anomalies are detected (e.g. not consistent estimates, kidnapped agents, etc...). LOCAL-2) Localization services in dynamic environments Recently in literature a particular interest has been turned to the application of localization and mapping techniques in dynamic environments [14], [28]. The actuality of these topics comes from the need of implementing and testing the robustness of the localization, mapping, and SLAM algorithms in presence of mobile elements in the scenario. Every task in populated environments requires the ability to suitably represent the dynamic information relative to the state of the elements of the scenario. Many approaches simply filter the spurious components of the dynamic elements of the environment, and exploit a-priori information on the scenario structure [16] or classification techniques in order to distinguish static landmarks from dynamic landmarks. In this second scenario, the exploration strategy is based on switching phases of movement of the two teams. The exploration agents coordinate themselves, within the coverage supplied by the infrastructure of the service agents, following strategies described in EXPLR. When the coverage limit is reached, the exploration agents stop and the service agents perform an active SLAM with known correspondences. The features, in this scenario, are represented by the exploration agents. The strategy is particularly relevant since partially unhinges the localization problem from external references and allows to operate in unstructured and dynamic environments. Moreover, the decoupling between mapping and SLAM processes allows to represent the dynamic elements of the environment. For instance, in tasks like surveillance and rescue, it is important to consider the dynamic elements not as noise, but to naturally integrate them in the map. Therefore we intend to guarantee the robustness of the proposed algorithms with respect to the dynamic elements of the environment. In the proposed research program, consistency problems of Bayesian filters will be addressed, evaluating first the performance of the different approaches to solve the SLAM problem, and then proposing hybrid strategies. The attention of the research unit to robust localization and fault tolerance is demonstrated by some preliminary studies [2]. The methodological contents of this scenario are: - the joint use of maps based on features represented by the exploration agents and of occupancy maps built by the exploration agents. This technique may avoid some problems normally encountered in the applications with dynamic environments. - the investigation of methodologies that allow the closure of local loops, limiting divergence phenomena related to the proposed approach. MANET In the area of the MANET WP, the POLITO unit activity will be devoted to four main issues. a) The analysis of parametric representations that model objects of the considered environment. The interest toward this topic is mainly due to the limited band available for the communication among the agents and it is particularly relevant when the number of agents involved is high and partial maps have to be integrated in an absolute reference frame. b) The study of information flows in the communication networks of the service agents that are fundamental to ensure convergence and consistency properties of the SLAM algorithms. c) The investigation of sensor fusion issues related to the use of well-known technologies in robotics (laser range finder, infrared sensors, sonar) and radiofrequency technologies (RFId), which are recently spreading due to high performance and low costs. In particular we intend to endow each service agent with a "RFId Reader" and each exploration agent with an active RFId Tag. Many works in literature show different approaches to obtain position estimates from the information exchanged by the RFId infrastructure [29]. This choice partially solves the correspondences problem in SLAM, preserving the accuracy of the estimates, thanks to the integration of different sensors. Moreover, the radiofrequency technology allows to relax the visibility constraints imposed by the sensors. Finally, experimental comparisons between RFId infrastructures and other concurrent technologies (e.g. UWB) will be proposed. d) it will be further investigated the behavior of the localization system supplied by the service agents if the all-to-all communication assumption is relaxed. The activities described above will be carried on following the following work plan.
