Testo inglese Design, Realization and Control of Variable Impedance Mechanisms for High-Performance and Safe Physical Human-Robot Interaction.
Testo inglese Robots designed to cooperate with humans, such as e.g. in assisted manipulation, collaborative assembly, domestic, entertainment, rehabilitation or medical applications, must fulfill different requirements from those typically met in conventional industrial applications. Robots for application in these areas could trade in certain traditional performance characteristics (e.g. rigidity or accuracy) to increase dependability and overall safety in unpredictable dynamically changing environments. Given such a discrepancy in requirements, this project aims at substantially advancing the state of the art in robot design and control to enable intrinsically safe physical human-robot interaction. SICURA is about developing key components of the next generation of robots, which have to meet the strictest safety standards, yet also to deliver useful performance. This poses new challenges to the design of all components of the robot, including mechanics, control, planning algorithms and supervision systems. The UNIPI contribution to SICURA is inspired to an integrated co-design approach of robotic systems for safe pHRI, which revolutionizes the classical design paradigm of industrial robots - rigid design for accuracy, active control for safety - into a new one: design robots that are intrinsically safe, and control them to deliver performance. Work done in Pisa for SICURA will create and deliver: 1) new actuator concepts and prototypes; 2) new dependable algorithms for supervision and planning; 3) new control algorithms for handling safe human-robot physical interaction and for fault-tolerant behaviour. UNIPI will contribute in SICURA in: 4) integrating these components in functionally meaningful subsystems; 5) evaluating quantitatively components and subsystems via experimental testing. As mentioned in Model A, UNIPI will be responsible of coordination of Workpackage PLAN (Planning) while contributing also on Workpackage MEC and CONT. Regarding PLAN, UNIPI will focus on safety and dependability problems which are very complex and multidisciplinary issues, so that in a first step we will identify the
requirements for the restricted set of technologies to be developed in SICURA. A broader and top-down definition of a safety concept for robots (of the current and next generations) is naturally embedded in this analysis. Furthermore, a novel view will be developed on a classical topic in robotics, namely that of planning robot trajectories. In a conventional setting, these are supposed to

Ministero dell ,Università e della Ricerca be fast and accurately executable at the robot end-effector level. The proposed approach is based on an optimal planning of motion and stiffness trajectories under maximum torque and minimum safety constraints, while minimizing the rest-to-rest motion transfer time. Finally, referring to MEC and CONT, UNIPI research will concern with the safe but accurate motion control of lightweight arms with non-negligible (constant) joint elasticity and with the simultaneous motion/stiffness control of variable impedance devices . The goal of this research topic is the development of design methodologies for a new generation of passively safe robots. Here, passively refers to the choice of having the mechanical (viz. motion actuation and transmission) design to take care of safety in the interaction, while the control design should be responsible for preserving performance. In this context, the first relevant issue is to establish appropriate metrics for safety and for performance evaluation. Based on revised or newly introduced metrics trading off safety and performance, different concepts of mechanical/control co-design of compliant robotic devices will be evaluated, in particular based on the Variable Impedance Actuation (VIA) paradigm originally developed by UNIPI, where joint parameters such as stiffness, damping, and gear-ratio may be continuously varied during link motion.

Testo inglese Robots designed to share an environment with humans, e.g., in domestic, entertainment, assistive, rehabilitation, or medical applications [1]-[4], must fulfill different requirements from those typically met in industry. It is often the case, for instance, that absolute accuracy requirements are less demanding. On the other hand, a concern of paramount importance is safety and dependability [5], [6] of the robot system. According to such difference in requirements, it can be expected that usage of conventional industrial arms for anthropic environments is far from optimal. The inherent danger to humans of conventional arms can be mitigated by drastically increasing their sensorization (using proximity-sensitive skins such as those proposed in [7] and [8], for example) and/or by modifying their controllers. Active stiffness and impedance control could be employed to introduce compliance with respect to sensed interactions. However, these approaches may not prove robust with respect to impacts on portions of the arm that are not equipped with sensors. Also, it is well known in the robotics literature that there are intrinsic limitations to what the controller can do to alter the behaviour of the arm if the mechanical bandwidth (basically dictated by mechanism inertia and friction) is not matched to the task (see, for example, [9]). In other words, making a rigid, heavy robot to behave gently and safely is an almost hopeless task if realistic conditions are taken into account. Probably the first lightweight arm for service applications was the whole-arm manipulator (WAM), proposed by [9]. The stress on safety has pushed a number of technological innovations in actuators, sensors, and structural design in recent years, leading to impressive realizations such as the generation of DLR lightweight robots [10]. Arms in this class are primarily characterized by the low inertia of their links and by backdrivability [9]. A relatively small amount of joint compliance is often present in these arms as a side-effect of other design choices such as cable transmission or joint torque sensors. Suitable force-control policies have been designed to employ such arms in safety-critical applications [11]-[13]. Another approach to increase the safety level of robot arms interacting with humans is to intentionally introduce mechanical compliance in the design. By this measure, which is still, of course, to be accompanied with low-inertia design of the arm's links, researchers tend to dynamically decouple the actuator's rotor inertia from the links whenever an impact occurs [14]. Naturally, compliant transmission can negatively affect performance in terms of increased oscillations and settling time. Accuracy in positioning and stiffness tuning should then be recovered by suitable design and control policies [15]. A new mechanical/control co-design approach, the Variable Impedance Approach (VIA), has been recently introduced in [16] as a new way to optimally trade safety and performance during task executions for a robot arm relying on the possibility to vary the mechanical impedance (i.e. stiffness, damping and/or gear-ratio parameters) of the actuation subsystem "on the fly". In particular, the way in which the mechanical impedance could optimally vary during motions can be determined as a solution of the Safe Brachistochrone optimal control problem introduced in [16, 17]. Results of such analysis show that optimal control of safe VIA mechanisms imposes high impedance at low link velocities, while low impedance should be commanded at high velocities, to decouple the actuator's inertia from the link's. Furthermore, the study in [17] shows that a crucial parameter for achieving high performance from VIA mechanism is the ratio between the maximum and minimum

Ministero dell ,Università e della Ricerca achievable actuator impedance. The general VIA concept can be implemented by different mechanisms, in particular those adopting antagonistic arrangements emulating human limbs (see e.g. the actuation systems discussed in [18]- [21]). However, a broader exploitation of the VIA concept in machines and industrial environments would largely benefit if fast, rugged, and compact VIA actuators were available. To this purpose, in [21] the realization of a compact rotary actuator with variable and controllable joint shaft stiffness is discussed in detail, along with its feedback control, which is able to guarantee safety and accuracy in positioning of the mechanism during fast trajectory tracking tasks, in spite of model parameter mismatches or unforeseeable disturbances.

Testo inglese As a consequence of the wide gap dividing application specifications and requirements in physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI) systems from those of conventional, industry-oriented robots, the usage of technologies and control schemes employed in the latter devices for anthropic environments is quite far from optimal. A machine that moves fast is typically more dangerous than a slow moving machine, but slow machines are often unacceptable in applications. Some attempts have been made in the past to overcome this problem by using sensorization of the moving parts of the (rigid) machines, and active control. These solutions tend to be costly, encumbering, and not sufficiently reliable. Within the SICURA project, the role of the Centro Interdipartimentale di Ricerca "E. Piaggio", University

Ministero dell ,Università e della Ricerca of Pisa (UNIPI), will be to develop new design and control methodologies related to workpackages MECC, PLAN, and CONT. Within SICURA, UNIPI will also evaluate and bring its new findings in the definition of future standards. Current safety standards may be much too restrictive for future applications because existing standards are made for today's industrial applications. The new safety methods will influence the technological possibilities of future robot systems and, therefore, influence future robot safety standards. UNIPI expected results can be outlined as follows: 1) Expected results related to the mechatronic design of intrinsic safe mechanisms (MECC) We will focus on a particular aspect of safety of robot manipulators, which concerns unexpected collisions by the manipulator with a human operator. Researchers have developed several standard indices of injury severity, including e.g. the Gadd Severity Index (GSI), and his mathematical refinement the Head Injury Criterion (HIC),
where T is conventionally the final time of impact and a is the acceleration of the head of the operator during the impact. In general, evaluation of the above severity indices is numeric, based on either experimental or simulated data. An HIC value of 1,000 or greater is typically associated with extremely severe head injury; a value of 100 can be considered suitable to normal operation of a machine physically interacting with humans. Recent result on new approaches to design actuators for intrinsically safe machines, the so called VIA (Variable Impedance Approach) approach, can be summarized that performance and safety of impacts can be achieved by allowing the mechanical impedance of a machine to vary in a large range with respect to velocity during motions, as came from the solution of the Safe Brachistochrone problem [16]. It is interesting to note that variation of impedance is also observed in motions of the human limbs, which appear to be controlled by the cerebellum adopting pre-computed optimal strategies: however, no direct relation has been shown so far between known neural strategies and the strategies resulting from the Safe Brachistochrone solutions.
Figure 1. Conceptual scheme of a variable impedance actuation system. To change the impedance Z = F/v of the mechanism during the execution of a task, we ca act on the three impedance parameters K, D, N.
Figure 2. The intuitive behaviour of VIA in a 1-DOF rest-to-rest task. For instance, Figure 1 and Figure 2 show respectively conceptual sketch of a variable impedance actuation system, and a classical velocity profile of a rest-to-rest task for a joint. At a rather intuitive level, it would be desirable that the joint have low impedance in the high velocity phase, so as to minimize the injury risks. On the other hand, it would seem appropriate to have high impedance in the early accelerating phase to put the link in motion swiftly, and in the final deceleration, to minimize oscillations. In this sense, compact mechatronic actuators with variable mechanical impedance will be designed and realized allowing a large range of impedance variation, optimizing both their velocity and stiffness range. In Figure 3 it is reported a prototype of such actuators, which consists of two independently controlled brushless DC motors, which are connected to the joint shaft by a timing belt, tensioned by elastic elements. A particular research effort will be to optimize such elements to maximize the reflected torque at the joint shaft in the stiff phases, along with optimizing the allowed interval for impedance variation.

Figure 3. First protype developed at UNIPI of a Variable Stiffness Actuator VSA-I and its functioning principle. The VIA concept can be realized though different arrangements (e.g. parallel and distributed macro-mini actuation, antagonistic actuation schemes, etc.). There are many open questions concerning the optimal co-design of VIA actuators; antagonistic actuation can be realized by two equally powerful motors, by an asymmetric arrangement, or by introducing an elastic cross-coupling between the two antagonistic actuators. A co-design optimization approach, using adequate metrics of safety and performance, will be used. UNIPI work will start with studies on one degree-of-freedom actuation mechanisms. The goal is to develop a compact, self-contained component integrating motor, gear reduction, and VIA mechanism. The component will have the external appearance of a conventional electrical motor/gearbox unit, with the additional feature of offering variability of the stiffness at the output shaft. Alternatively, variable damping or, more generally, impedance at the output shaft will be realized. The component is intended for general-purpose use in machines for physical human-robot interaction; however, other potential applications are envisaged, e.g. in efficient mechanisms for intermittent actuation, where variable mechanical energy-storage elements are of importance (e.g., mechanisms for legged locomotion). UNIPI work will prosecute with the design of integrated VIA systems for multi-degree of freedom devices i.e. robot arms. When moving from one degree of freedom to multi-degree of freedom joint, additional challenges appear. Defining safety and performance metrics in terms of arm design parameters (link dimensions, velocities, inertias, etc.) is still an open problem. For instance, coupled joints, combining two or three degrees of freedom (as for the human shoulder) are imaginable as an alternative to today's serial sequence of 1DOF joints. Redundant or cross-coupled arrangements of antagonist actuators (as used in the human arm) can also be considered to maximize the safety-performance trade-off. 2) Expected results related to the planning of robot movements (PLAN) The optimal planning of both velocity of the moving parts of the machine and of its mechanical impedance, has been recently introduced in [16] to guarantee safety and performance of very simple (i.e. 1-DOF) variable impedance mechanisms conceived to operate in close contact with humans. In this work it is introduced the Safe Brachistochrone, that is the solution to the following problem: "For a mechanism with total inertia and actuator limits given, find the minimum time necessary to move between two fixed configurations such that at any instant during the motion an unexpected impact with the device would produce a injury severity index below safety levels". This problem will be generalized to n-DOF, considering general and complex structures operating with safety and performance in anthropic environments. It must be noticed that the Safe Brachistochrone is a useful optimal control tool able to solve the safety/performance trade-off in case of point-to-point trajectories, but, due to computational complexity, the effectiveness decreases if it is adopted on-line and in presence of general motions. On-line optimal, or sub-optimal, algorithms for the planning of impedance with respect to joint shaft velocity for complex manipulation systems will be conceived and implemented in embedded controllers whose reliability and effectiveness in both performance and safety will be proved experimentally. UNIPI aims at the development of a real-time procedure that adapts on-line a manipulator trajectory in a context where the robot is in close proximity of a person, called Reactive Planning. Not only the trajectory but also the velocity profile should be adapted in real-time. 3) Expected results related to control systems for safety and accuracy (CONT) State-of-art control algorithms will be characterized and rethought the CONT framework. To guarantee safety and performance, also in presence of uncertainties in constructive parameters, adaptive control techniques will be investigated. Indeed the dynamic control of tunable compliant arms inherits many of the problems with the control of flexible arms, but they can only partially exploit solutions provided in that field. A key difference is the presence of essential non-linearities in the model of VIA mechanisms, which obviously make control harder. This is particularly true when an exact model of the system parameters is not available, and adaptation is therefore necessary. The dynamics of our prototype called VSA, result
where IR and IJ are, respectively, the DC motors and link rotary inertias, D is the (small) axial damping coefficient, q1 q2 qJ are the rotors and link angular positions, 12, J1 and J2 are the torques generated on the pulleys by the three springs, e collects external disturbances acting on the link, and 1, 2 are the control torques acting on the two motors. The pursued control task is to regulate the transmission stiffness and the joint shaft position qJ. An important control objective is to guarantee that arbitrary trajectories of the end-effector can be followed while stiffness is controlled to desired values, without the two specifications interfering with each other (decoupled control). Control design will be based on suitable, possibly simplified, dynamic models of variable impedance robot devices, covering first the single-dof case and then the multiple (most likely, three) dof case. Since different passively safe mechanical designs are possible, a preliminary investigation will be conducted on transformations of the dynamic models so as to check whether a common "canonical" model structure can be found. In a first operative condition, it will be assumed that the planned time evolution of joint stiffness is actually realized during robot motion (in other words, stiffness variations are programmed and executed in an open-loop fashion). The controller has to take into account these stiffness variations for the accurate tracking of desired reference trajectories. Later on, the simultaneous feedback control of motion and stiffness will be addressed by following an input-output decoupling approach. This conveniently allows specifying a desired error transient for each of the controlled (position and stiffness) outputs in an independent and linear way. Control schemes should use only the available sensors of the specific device. To be able to test and evaluate the developed motion planning algorithms (PLAN) and the developed control algorithms (CONT) the resulting best algorithms will be integrated in the prototypical framework developed in MECC. The first phase of validation for the different solutions proposed and determined will be carried out via simulations. Investigation can be done for different situations happening in human-robot interacting tasks both during normal operations, and in case of software/hardware failures. In simulation, the manipulation system can be easily decomposed into simple sub-systems. They can be simulated with reasonable models in worst case failure situations with high flexibility. As a second step an experiment design will be carried out based on accepted standards with defined safety and performance measures for each of the sub-systems and for the overall system in pHRI environment. This will include the development of impact jigs for safety evaluation and the accomplishment of some calibration experiments to test the accuracy of the experimental and measurement apparatus. Benchmarking tests and analysis will be done on an already available manipulator and on prototypes (e.g., the UNIPI SoftArm) for the intended pHRI applications. Project Schedule Schematically, the research activities will be carried out according to the following four phases: Phase 1 (Duration 6 months, Cost 19000 Euro)
