[email protected] website: http://scricco.us/Itl101 [Underconstruction] Office Hours: TBA Main Office Telephone Number: (631) 471-1400 OBJECTIVES: This course is designed for those who have little to no knowledge of the Italian language. Its goals are the inculcation of reading and writing skills as well as a continued emphasis on conversation. Simple discussions based on Italian customs, travel, foods, and films serve as important elements providing students a total cultural experience. The crux of any foreign language program is communication be it via a handwritten letter, a missive in the form of an e mail, a television commercial, or across time through a literary piece. Consequently, the goal of the course is the improvement of communicative proficiency. The purpose of the course is to aid students to form the foundation of proficiency in the four linguistic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing; as well as familiarize them with Italian culture. By the end of the course, students will be expected to carry out the following tasks: Listening . Comprehend messages and short conversations when listening to peers, familiar adults. . Understand the main idea and some basic information in television, radio, or live presentations. Speaking . Initiate and sustain basic conversations, face to face or on the phone, with native speaking or more fluent individuals used to speaking with neophyte learners of the language. . Select vocabulary appropriate to a limited range of topics, employ simple sentences in present, past, and future time frames, and express limited details by using appropriate modifiers.
. Use repetition and circumlocution as well as gestures and other nonverbal cues to sustain conversation. Reading . Page 1
scopeitalian4 Read and comprehend materials written for neophyte learners within the topic and language that are familiar to them. . Use cognates and contextual and visual cues to derive meaning from texts that contain unfamiliar words, expressions, and structures. . Read simple materials independently. Writing . Write short notes, uncomplicated personal and business letters, brief journals entires, and short reports. Cultural Awareness . Exhibit more basic knowledge of cultural traits and patterns. . Draw simple comparisons between societies. . Recognize that there are important linguistic and cultural variations among groups that speak the same target language. . Understand how words, body language, rituals, and social interactions influence communication. Procedure In order to fulfill these objectives the professor will follow a communicative approach to second language acquisition. Active, regular use of Italian language is the key to enjoyment and proficiency; hence, the course will be conducted mostly in Italian. One cannot over emphasize the importance of using the target language; consequently, active classroom participation is required even at the beginning level.
